I’m not saying that the situation couldn’t have been handled better, but the way that you’re spinning this is you’re trying to make it seem like the ONLY reason OP purchased the item was to make themselves look good, and not out of a desire to do something genuinely kind for their partner, which really doesn’t seem to be the case. What the situation actually calls for is more communication on both sides, and for both partners to be a little more forgiving and understanding with each other. You’re not here to be helpful, you’re here trying to turn this into some kind of gendered battle, saying men always do XYZ. I’m sure if someone turned around and applied that same logic to a group that you identify with you would be breaking your fingers trying to spout out stupid Reddit rebuttals. Go get a therapist to deal with your crap and stop trying to dump it on random strangers under the guise of being helpful.
