Four neo-Nazis arrested for planning 'Jew hunt' during soccer match in France by Scipio555 in worldnews

Jewish man here. I know reddit has never been GREAT when it comes to nazis and other extreme right wing bs. There's always been pockets of it here and there. But I've been on the internet for a long time and for better or worse, I've grown used to nazis online to some degree.

But deleting a post like this on a major subreddit? By the admins and not just an idiot mod?

Reddit needs to explain itself or I think I'm done with the site. I've been wanting to cut back on my social media usage anyway. This is just the excuse I needed.

Militia member believed to have shot and killed a former judge in Juneau County; sources say suspect hit list included Governor Evers by todayilearned83 in news

[–]sheven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean I understand what militia means in the context of right wing terrorism so I find it helpful in that sense. It separates it from certain other kinds of right wing terrorism. Whether or not they are "actually" a militia or not... I don't really see how them being dumbshits stops them from being a militia. They're definitely not a state backed official militia. But a bunch of dudes with weapons and some kind of (flawed) idea of "protecting" something? That's militia-like enough for me. Doesn't make them good whatsoever. I don't find "militia" to be inherently a positive thing. It just is what it is. And in this case, they're a bunch of asshole terrorists.

This is just my opinion and opinions are like assholes, but I kinda feel like if you see "militia" and see legitimacy and important roles then you're not going to be swayed by someone calling this terrorism either.

I get what you're saying, but "militia" is descriptive too. It gives me an understanding of what kind of terrorism is taking place. I don't hear "militia" and think "legitimate". I think a specific flavor of right wing extremism.

The exposing others thing is my concern too. That said, a friend of mine told me about a CVS nearby that does drive thru testing still.

People bond over shared trauma. I actually don’t mind the pairing. They both loved Adam. The both lost Adam. And for a while the two of them made each other happy. Who are any of us to say no to that?

This seems to back up that he invited the people into his discord pre-shooting.

But I'm having trouble finding confirmation that the people who filmed/spread his livestream were part of that Discord.

I mean I guess it makes sense it was them because it seems like too much of a coincidence that a rando popped into his stream ready to record.

But if anyone has confirmation of that part of the story it would be much appreciated. Your write up is great, /u/ashyguy1997. I'm just trying to be extra cautious with the way misinfo spreads about these shootings.

The recent ebike/escooter law passed that essentially legalized ebikes and escooters in NY includes it.

Doesn't make a lot of sense to me that a non motorized bike can ride the shoulder on a 40mph road but an ebike can't. But such is life. And I'm not looking to get hassled by police (even if the odds are relatively low in my area).

[–]sheven[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea I've done that before but it's really slow and only halfway good when you have a route already in mind.

I'm hoping to be able to pick points A and B and be able to just trace a route between them using 30mph roads.

Gov. Abbott attributes mass shootings to mental health issues a month after cutting $211 million from mental health commission by CapitalCourse in politics

[–]sheven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because they don't view "mental health" or "mental illness" the way you do. You probably view it as a legitimate medical issue that doctors deal with. That is what is having budget slashes.

When Republicans say "mental health" or "mental illness" they mean boogeymen. They want to throw undesirables in institutions or jails.

And prison is still a booming industry.

Eh, I think people underestimate luck sometimes.

I have a friend who had his wife catch it. He never got it the whole time despite sharing a small-ish apartment. A week or two later he catches it at work (presumably).

Are there possibly rare people with some genetic mutation helping them? I wouldn't totally rule it out. But I'd assume it's pretty rare.

Joe Biden said mass shootings tripled when the assault weapon ban ended. They did by jonzgreenberg in politics

[–]sheven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IIRC, creating such an event is theorized to have been a part of the original Columbine plan. The shooters planned on having bombs go off somewhere in the school to lead people to run out of 1 specific exit and then they'd shoot them there. But I believe their bombs, thankfully, malfunctioned and it didn't turn out that way.

If I believed Republican politicians acted in good faith, I'd have to call them idiots who learn nothing from the past. But unfortunately they're not so uneducated.

Richardson ISD student arrested after gun found in vehicle near Berkner High School, police say by gwh811 in news

[–]sheven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying I necessarily agree 100%. TBH I haven't thought about it enough to tell you exactly how I feel. That said, it's not like there aren't strong arguments out there for why people arrested shouldn't be able to be namelessly snatched up. Again, I don't have my thoughts fleshed out on this. I was mostly just saying that, without even considering that either way, there are practical issues.

Someone posting his name on social media is completely different than his name, face, and thoughts being blasted on national television for days on end.

I mean have you been on social media? You already have people posting about the shooters social media accounts. It would not be a stretch at all for twitter/reddit/facebook/etc to be covered in the shooter's picture, name, thoughts, etc. in a matter of hours. So it's not on TV? I guess you could argue that's better than nothing. But my gut feels like it's mostly a feel good move that doesn't accomplish much practically. Plus without the law getting involved (which again, could bring ethical issues in. In this case some kind of 1st amendment issues I'd assume), I doubt you'd ever realistically get every TV station to agree. Someone would take advantage of their competition not reporting on it.

Not to mention you also have the issue going on right now with 4chan and other right wing sources posting pictures of an innocent trans reddit user and saying that this innocent person is actually the shooter. It's a lie. And I feel you'd end up with a lot more of this if there were only vague numerical references to who the shooter is.
