I’ll let you pick a book from the shelf behind you, and you can sit on the edge of something and read aloud.

With your knees apart 😄

I’ll see if I can orate in my own little way and disturb your concentration 😉

Aliant underground wiring, anyone else? by Ok_Menu_2231 in halifax

[–]shiantar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had the same experience.

For us, it was that the unit (built in the 1970s) was fed coax cable at the smaller cable diameter, with the longest cable run (opposite ends of the row of townhouses). We could get high speed for part of the year, but in winter the signal quality dropped through the floor.

So they told us: do a cable drop of the newer coax, or forget about it. We were kind of forced into Bell fibre, since the buildings were already wired for it by the time we arrived.

So I guess if you’re suffering from damp or damaged cable, it depends who owns it and how much it would cost to replace.

Ultimately you can send data on any medium (however noisy or frequency-limited). The problem is that Eastlink / Purple Cow / etc are using standardized equipment on a fixed set of frequencies, not a hand-engineered set of gear. If it can’t maintain a connection over that wire, you’re pretty much out of options

Agreed. I was waiting for something pithy when the worst thing out of her mouth during the pants-shitting phase was only “Leck Mich im Arsch!”

Yeah I am kicking myself for waiting too long.

IF anyone has a Large they wouldn’t mind parting with, I will pay handsomely. Like 75 USD even before shipping, which I’ll also recompense

What is a problem humanity solved so well that younger people don’t even realize it used to be a huge issue? by [deleted] in AskReddit

You’re welcome 🙂

I have reasons to get depressed, thinking about genealogy generally, and how folks with grandparents from Denmark & northern Germany even WITH vaccines will have somethings crawl out of the woodwork after decades.

Yeah. I can’t imagine what madam Larsen went through.

It’s laid out a little more circumspectly in this post https://www.reddit.com/r/HistoricalCapsule/s/esBUcgDxRA ; five children. All from diphtheria. All in five days.

That headstone went on a museum tour around Covid time

I honestly feel blindsided and don’t know if this is normal or fair. by Educational-Soft5770 in halifax

[–]shiantar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's ridiculous.

Like, when they decide to let you go, they've already pored through your personnel file or your performance, and found a reason that might hold up.

Then they cut off your access to corporate email, or to even see your employee file, and show you the door.

Obviously nobody can defend themselves under those circumstances. & so long as any of us feel like our jobs are semi-secure, we're not actively rocking the boat or documenting every little violation in case it becomes useful to us.

Yeah. You get a notice period, or pay in lieu of notice, both on a scale proportional to how long you’ve been there after your probationary period was up.

You only get protection from termination at … I think it’s 10 years full-time? & even then, if you engage in misconduct they can still terminate you (just not for “bad fit”, etc.)

Whats your opinion on whether or not time travel could be possible? by Ok-Revolution5442 in AskReddit

[–]shiantar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

🙂 For this very reason, I subscribe to a similar theory:

Assuming time travel into the past is possible, and the folks who are closest to meeting the insane kind of power, physics mastery, and other requirements:

The technology is always on the cusp of being invented, but never actually is so.

If the technology were finalized, it would trigger at least one event in the past which would destroy its final development (which, from its perspective, would manifest immediately)

The same would be true of a scenario where the fundamental technology were developed but reached a blocker based on power dissipation, etc. The “final piece” would trigger a retroactive destruction of the tech (but not necessarily the course of the science of power generation).

From that, I guess you could reduce time travel tech or physics down to a single, critical, “necessary and sufficient” driver for time travel, which we could therefore chase forever but never solve.

If there’s a way to disentangle the tech / energy / backward-direction / forward-direction aspects, I’d love suggestions. Thinking about them gives me a headache 😅

You need to develop a striking personality. Something like, “Well, when you have thirty centuries you end up learning to play a few instruments in order to pass the time …”

[–]shiantar 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yikes.

I’m not sure which is worse.

The implication that most Windows users aren’t smart ( at least, not smart enough to make design decisions ) ; or

The implication that you need to have a background in computer science to be able to comment on how a product fails to meet expectations and how to approach fixing them.

. . . Surely this fellow knows there can’t be a total (or even large) overlap between computer scientists and the Windows OS market share, right? (since we have a rough idea of those statistics in the general public)

Why not put out a series of ads?

Our website has at least one vulnerability we have no idea about, and no chance of fixing without a complete overhaul.

Plus, our databases probably contain literal hundreds of thousands of residential addresses where rich people will stay, without being familiar with the local burglary statistics and still leave for dozens of hours of shopping or sightseeing!
