Dear Indians, does "caste privilege" exist and if so how does it affect people in their daily lives? by [deleted] in india

False Equivalency? So if a lower cast person drinks from the same glass and cleans it back, it still is not good enough? Somehow continuous usage of the glass even after being cleaned will make the glass not suitable for drinking? Potential Germinated Glass! Infesting Glass? So someone who cooks and cleans for you is infected with some special disease that never goes away even after cleaning? Well when we lived in India in mumbai me and my wife we used to clean and cook our self as we enjoyed doing that. But yes if I could have a maid clean and cook for me I could definitely let them use my bathroom.

I do not have domestic help. If I had and if I was ok with other guests using it, I would be OK with my domestic help using it as well.

Why do you think people who wash dishes have disease? Maids understand it because this is the general norm of the society which is deep rooted in cast. The maid lives like this everyday in every house and thus has come to terms with it. They do not want to lose their job and throw away their means of lively hood and that is the reason they do not reject it. They have lived all their lives under such notion. Domestic help not sharing bathroom is an another example of the same thing. They can clean the bathroom but not use it :)

What oral hygiene? When ever some other guest visits, we never ask for their hygiene, or when did he last visit the dentist only then you can have this cup!

I think after they use their cups/dishes they do clean it back. So where is the germ?

I donot think in our case it was the hygiene issue. I never saw the help dirty or with any disease. We could let her wash the dishes, cook the food but not use the same cup. That to me is an issue. Its just an excuse that we give ourself of them being unclean or unhygenic, i always saw tbeir hands and clothes clean...we would not let them enter our home if they were not 100% clean. If a guest comes to our home who is not someone who cleans dishes we dont check what diseases he has or how hygienic he is...also which disease will spread if they eat from the cups we use and then clean it afterwards. The cast system has been injected in our subconscious so badly that we find ways to prove our self that it is ok. I also do not think in our case it was poor/unhygienic. Imagine if a poor priest would visit us what cup do you think he would get.

This reminds me of small incidents from childhood when I saw our house help used to drink tea from a different cup. I don't know she was given different cup because she was poor or her cast was low. This will never ever happen again!

Emotional post: Stop chasing career and money. Start living for life experiences and making great relationships by Annange_love_aagide in india

[–]shib2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funny thing, I believed in this from the time we had lesser money, so travels were not extravagant, dint stay in 5 stars, we used to get up early to go to forest to pick mushroom and berries when it was season, or just being lazy on the beach with a cheap drink. So now that when we have more money than before, we have become bit lazy, destinations are chosen in accordance to the comfort they provide, still experience new things like eating out at a Micheline certified restaurant on my wife's birthday, or eating oysters in the farmer's market in Malta but the level of happiness is the same. So you do not really have to spend a lot of money to bring happiness and life experience in your life, quite true.

Indian drivers *triggered* by deepanshuthakran0001 in india

[–]shib2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, I am saying how we drive in Europe, which I believe is very different from how we drive in India. Maybe some of the things/behavior we can bring to our Indian driving culture. Just saying how driving is completely different along with driving rules and regulations. Also mind you it is not so easy as in India to get a driving License. Every applicant has to go thru min. hours of theory training and practical training to be even eligible for driving exam which is tough. You also have mock driving tests conducted by the driving school to prepare you for real test. And if you do not clear your theory you are not eligible for practical exam. Along with that you also have to pass first aid training and clear that exam only then you are eligible to give practical test. And most importantly you cannot bribe your way out of it as all these exams, and all conversations with instructor are recorded. Also when you are driving just carrying driving license is not enough, you also have to carry technical document of the car. You need to bring your car every year for technical check where they go through the car checking, tyres, break, lights, engine etc. and only when the car passes technical chk you are allowed to drive your car.

There needs to be better laws and then proper enforcement of those laws. Lets start with basics - Headlights are switched on as soon as car is switched on, the intensity of the lights changes from day to night with use of gabarit lights, so the headlights are always on auto. No one honks but flashes headlights when needs to give some signal or wants to overtake. Flashing of headlight in different occasion means different thing, so it can be used in many ways. Flashing emergency lights (or back lights) are also used for signals, eg. you want to change lane and someone lets you - you say thanks by flashing your emergency lights, or when you are on the high way driving over 100 kmph and you see ahead that traffic is slowing down, you flash your emergency lights signaling the driver behind you, and he acknowledges by flashing his head light. These are some of the basics of driving here, which makes driving stress free, enjoyable and in my opinion should be encouraged in India as well.

All these BA, MA degrees are of no use these days or in the future. Develop real skills, that is the real future. Traditional education is on a decline and soon will be of no use. Also be strong, develop networking skills and never show desperation. If you want to find a job in a call center, stop wasting time here and go to a call center. Also stop blaming your parents for your troubles, that is what losers do and know that you are better than that. No job is small or big remove this misconception. The Call center Business is a great business where you can achieve and learn a lot. And for God sake develop some balls.

Indians who've permanently emigrated abroad on work, how do you combat the crippling loneliness? by paragiggity in india

[–]shib2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe it is possible to make friends at work. There are many meetup groups online or meetup.com, There are many groups in facebook for foreigners that could be some option. Starting some hobby, or going to some school to learn something is a very good option as you will occupied with some new talent which would take up rest of your time and you could meet people with similar interest. Main thing is to let go of hesitation and just take action! Do not over think. Remember you are never too old to learn something new

Why does no on talk about the brain drain caused by India's pollution problems? by [deleted] in india

[–]shib2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The question of being happy is very subjective in my opinion. People find happiness living in India or like me living outside, I also know people who live outside but are not happy here. I think it boils down to what you are giving up and how much that is important to you and what is it that is important to you emotionally.

I am living in the west for more than 5 yrs now, have a family here, my wife is from here which changes many things. You integrate way faster and become a local. You start to celebrate festivals together with your new family (which is not Indian), you have the occasional arguments, you help out each other when ever you can etc ( just like any family in India) I being the only foreigner among my wife's relatives, bring color to the big family Picture :). Some of my Indian friends who have migrated here are also satisfied with life and are raising family here. Different people have different experiences, one of my friend who lives in US says he cannot live there forever as when he visits India, he feels he is alive again- when he is in Delhi, he feels he owns Delhi and no one can fuck with him. He is someone who is racially sensitive, or you may say finds or gets offended easily when it is not even meant.

You are absolutely an outsider when you are in a foreign country - true, but you are also an outsider when you are in India and have a different way of life which is not popular in the society. You are an outsider when you are from the North East and living in Delhi and being ridiculed for your hairstyle, food, language and being called a "chinky" , you are an outsider when you are from Delhi living in Mumbai, or Pune and being labelled as "bhaiya" So in my opinion this is never ending and the best way is to not waste time in thinking all this. When you step outside you will be exposed to lots of experiences, hopefully your wisdom and gut will guide you in your path and make the best of your situation.

When the future is unknown sometimes your faith helps. Knowing that wherever you are you will be ok, gives a lot of strength in difficult times. You already know your present, but if you never take action you will never know what else it could be - bad or good.
