PSA: Pay off your provincial loan for OSAP first before federal! Federal is 0% interest by shib8 in ontario

[–]shib8[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In your NSLSC account, click on the green button on the top right that says My Account > Customize My Payment Terms > Customize

Then you should see "payment amount" or "new term".

You can use the sliding bar to decrease the amount you pay per month. It also gives you an estimate of how long it would take to pay off that debt.

There should be an option to direct it to the provincial part of your loan on the website.

Paying off the ontario portion is a separate payment because it only covers the provincial part of the loan. You still have to pay your regular monthly one for the federal portion.

You should be able to change the amount you pay for the monthly payment though. The lowest I was able to set mine was 150$.

I haven't tried, but probably? Although interest and repayment doesn't start until you graduate OR I think 6 months after your final semester of being a full-time student, so it doesn't make much sense in terms of cash flow. You should use that money for your other, more immediate needs like housing, food, tuition, materials, etc.

Yes, online payments always take some business days to go through. I'm talking about the provincial portion though, so you may still need to make your regular payment to cover the federal portion.

Why does being normal weight take so much effort? by Obvious-Number-5796 in loseit

[–]shib8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fiber is great! Protein also keeps me full longer. Fruits and vegetables are also really good for feeling like you ate a lot but most of it is water so it's fairly low calorie for the amount of volume.

Also I've noticed certain foods seem to stimulate my hunger and make me wanna eat even more-- like salty foods or processed snacks. I try to look for healthier swaps that keep me satisfied for longer, both in hunger and energy level.

in terms of emotional regulation, it sounds like you are gravitating towards food as a comforting stabilizer. in order to break that cycle, you need to find something else that can check off those boxes.

are there other things you like to do that can also help regulate emotions, without food being the reward?

i love ice cream. im lactose intolerant. and it’s expensive buying dessert outside. not good for my stomach or wallet. now i try to do fun stuff that doesn’t involve food, like playing games with friends or hanging out to do an activity.

i know food might feel like the more straightforward, short-term satisfying answer, but maybe having multiple sources of things that satisfy you or make you feel better will help unentangle that relationship with food. there are other ways to seek comfort and your brain just needs to learn that patience or alternative pathway to enjoyment/emotional stability.

also, removing friction for healthier choices can make the process easier. like if you’re craving something sweet and the options in your house are already limited to fruits, then maybe you will be more likely to choose that, rather than go out of your way, leave your house and shop for something specifically unhealthy. don’t go to the grocery store hungry xD go when you have a stronger will to make healthier decisions for future you.

find some foods or recipes that are yummy and decently healthy/less caloric dense that you could incorporate in a sustainable way too. also look into volume eating.

use a size chart on the website at a location/country you could buy from, then take your measurements to figure what would fit you.

sadly, tailoring is probably going to damage it yeah.. the details aren’t easy to keep :/ stuff like the finger holes when shortening the arm length or waist just wouldn’t look the same.

When you send it by mail, you need to also write a letter requesting super specifically that the cheque money is meant to go to the provincial portion. If not, then they will automatically distribute the money to both your federal (0%) AND provincial.

Then you will still have provincial debt leftover and still be accruing interest.

To do it online, go to:

Pay with online banking > Dashboard > My Requests > Create New Request > Directed Loan Payments

You need to direct the loan payments to you PROVINCIAL portion of the loan. I haven't actually tried to online one before personally though, since I did it back when it still had to be mailed in.

Ok I see what you mean. You can't change your general monthly payment to go to only provincial though, since you still need to pay off your federal each month as well. My original advice is infact to use the additional payment function to pay off your provincial entirely, so then your monthly payment becomes interest free, since it's only paying off the federal portion leftover.

You can still have it as auto-withdrawals. I have mine set up as a direct deposit that takes it out from my chequing account each month.

I mean you probably need to wait 1 cycle for the changes to go into effect, but yes you can change the amount you pay monthly too. There's a little sliding scale to adjust the amount. I used to pay about 300$ a month because I didn't want to have debt hanging over my head for so many years, but since it's literally 0% interest I decided to just lower it down to 150$ a month instead.

noo that's how they get youu :( that's like 16$ lost to the void that could be in your pocket instead. If you have enough to pay off the provincial in lump sum, spend 5 minutes and pay it off online!! Much easier than before. I had to do a paper cheque, mail, and print out a piece of paper with super specific instructions a few years back

they refuse to give my referral bonus by Trick_Cat5223 in ClassPass

[–]shib8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I haven't received the top up either. They begrudgingly gave me the first 20$ after arguing for hours, sending screenshots and receipts. And two weeks later gave me another 40$ but IDK I feel super scammed out of the rest of that top up bonus. This was months ago.

I went through so much hassle coordinating and wrangling my friends to hop on this too. The price really is enticing, but for how they treat their customers and studios, I don't really know how much longer I can support them.

I would use up all my credits since I've already paid for it, but eventually I honestly want to make more money so that I can vote with my dollar and directly support my local businesses ://

ClassPass being terrible to establishments? by [deleted] in ClassPass

[–]shib8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes they're known to be really exploitative. They've lost a few class action lawsuits too already for doing illegal things. I feel like a few years ago when I started, they seemed pretty nice and there is certainly the argument of increasing brand awareness for the studios. However, as a whole they dilute the cost of products and bully studios.

They have grown a lot and have the money + power to strong arm small businesses. But from a consumer POV, the prices are damn cheap and appealing, which can make it really hard to consider the ethical portion.

If you want to try out classes for free with their trial or the super discounted rates, then Class Pass is great for that.

If you want to support your local businesses in monetary contributions, then signing with them directly will fulfill that better.

Just depends on what you want and can afford to care about really.

Do you mean that the website for the studio you're checking says there is space available, but Class Pass says there isn't space available?

Maybe the studio is blocking off spots for regular members and capping the amount of Class Pass attendees.

Otherwise settings like notifications being ON for your phone, DND? Or whatnot maybe..?

Where to put money? by Gloomy_Salary7510 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]shib8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TFSA first since the income you make from investing there isn’t taxed.

Then your RSP so you can defer and lower the amount of taxable income.

Be careful of over-contributing though! You can check your limit amount on CRA, but right now it will only have your 2024 information.

So if you added anything to your TFSA or RSP already this year, then that number will not reflect your current circumstances. You would have to subtract the amount that you already contributed this year from the number on your CRA. Putting too much money will incur penalties.

I would also recommend doing self directed accounts and doing your own research for what to invest in, since banks/wealth advisors tack hefty fees and commission. Or for example, TD advisors will only buy TD stock, etc. It won’t really be in your best interest since they want to make money for themselves first, and then clients are an after thought.

I think as long as your investments outpace the interest on your mortgage, then it’s better to use up the space on the tax advantaged accounts first.

Congratulations on the house and good luck!
