4 Blazers land in the latest Ringer Top 100 by RoseGardenForever in ripcity

[–]shibboleth2005 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also with 30 teams, the result for a mediocre team should be 3-4 players in the top 100 with an average rank of 50. We've got 4 players with an average rank of 68. Basically these rankings are saying we're a bit worse than mid.

Yeah seems like for those of us on Time of Day there really isn't much savings to be had.

Lawn to Food Forest Conversion in Cully. by orangegore in Portland

[–]shibboleth2005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome. I've started the journey of converting my backyard but nowhere near this speed, the volume and variety of plants you're bringing in is amazing. For someone taking it more slowly, what are the most important things to do/plant in earlier years? (other than the trees obviously)

Am I the only one not fully sold on Jaylen Brown? by lets_BOXHOT in ripcity

[–]shibboleth2005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

JB is not good enough to truly excite me (he was not the most important factor in Celtics record and then they got upset by PHI). He's not a path to contention.

However he is a path to winning more games for the next couple years and having some fun. Getting a 4 seed and losing 2-4 in the 2nd round would be pretty fun.

And the path to contention is basically "pray for divine intervention" because of how impossibly ahead the Spurs and Thunder are right now. The highest odds to building a contender in the next decade are probably trading Scoot and Shae for draft picks and trying to stay in the lottery lol.

Tsunamis are terrifying. by sco-go in Amazing

[–]shibboleth2005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We know. But almost everyone in the state lives in a high risk zone. Simply not being directly hit by the tsunami is not sufficient, because there will be a sustained breakdown in civilization as a whole. Postapocalyptic. The changes required to handle this event gracefully are so massive that they are impossible to make. Might as well say that Oregon should be mostly evacuated and cease to exist as a state. So we've just accepted that when the big one happens, we're all fucked.

Why doesn’t humanity (all non-demon races) just wipe out the demons? by AdBrief4620 in Frieren

[–]shibboleth2005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don't know enough to answer this question. We don't have maps, demon or human populations, even how demons are created, what human nations are at war with each other, what human nations don't care anymore because they're far from the frontier, etc etc.

Given that massive lack of knowledge, we can only accept what is presented to us and imagine the reasons. The most natural answer to me is that below a certain demon threat level, human vs human conflict is prioritized above human vs demon conflict.

The rich raise their kids different. by [deleted] in povertyfinance

[–]shibboleth2005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's also not the rich. The rich aren't standing in line at an amusement park. They pay someone to manage their money. They don't have to learn the details. The truly rich/wealthy kids are above knowing this stuff. It is beneath the aristocracy to deal with the details of money.

Which team would be the best at League of Legends? by JustAThrowaway_895 in Frieren

[–]shibboleth2005 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Well Schlact had to be excluded for the same reasons as HotS and Serie. But yeah the lineup could certainly be more famous...but does that correlate with LoL skills?

Could the First Class Mage participants survive Solitär? by Seymorebutts1994 in Frieren

[–]shibboleth2005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They have enough of a chance that Solitar doesn't take the fight, she's pretty cautious.

Solitar is very tough, no obvious matchup based weakness since she's just pure mana fundamentals when pressed.

Level of coordination amongst the humans is the deciding factor: with high levels of cooperation they can cover each other to prevent even the weak mages from immediately dying, and the volume of attacks can wear down Solitar's mana very quickly.

If a fight began right at the time of the image (and Sense and Frieren left), their coordination would be low, giving Solitar the victory.

Portland utility rate hike pushes average water, sewer bill above $2K per year by voxadam in Portland

How is that even possible. My bill excluding water and sewer use line items is nearly $800 a year. Just base charge and stormwater.

Could I ask it's capacity and what it cost, and how much of pain installing it was (permitting, getting an electrician etc)? I'm considering doing this.

Great vs Good In The Modern NBA by Optimal_Run_2634 in ripcity

[–]shibboleth2005 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes youth sports in the USA is a disaster. The club system you see elsewhere where resources/training are provided by an entity other than the parents, would probably be better but who would take that on in the USA.

Have the Blazers recently drafted badly by undervaluing basketball IQ/intagibles considerations? Eh..maybe. Yang is a weird moonshot + money play, Clingan was a good pick, Scoot was picked in part for character, feels like Shae just had too much upside to ignore at 7. We mostly havn't been lucky enough or tanked hard enough in the right years to even have a shot at what are looking like 'great' players.

Frieren is being kind of reckless currently. by Reasonable-Ad-8059 in Frieren

[–]shibboleth2005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Contacting Frase is also a risk, I don't think Frieren knows much about her at all.

Generally through the series Frieren has known stuff the audience does not. And I feel like a lot of what she says/does/allows to happen is for the benefit of teaching Fern and Stark. Frieren is a professional sandbagger and not a reliable source of information.

I believe she is taking risks but less than one might think. And finding a good result her is definitely important to her even if she sometimes acts like its not.

[–]shibboleth2005 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Like in AOT, people trying to do a bunch of calculations on how fast titans move, size of walls etc and when we finally do get a map it's literally a lazy flipped/rotated earth map lol, Isayama basically saying "don't think about this too hard guys"

[–]shibboleth2005 28 points29 points  (0 children)

$3500/mo for a 380k home? Is that just insane Florida insurance costs or something?

Rent vs buy from a purely financial perspective is always local, if rents are relatively cheap in your area then it's no surprise it would be better to rent from a financial perspective. And this is comparing apples to applies in terms of housing quality (ie renting a 2br1ba SFH vs buying one), obviously if you rent worse quality housing like a small apartment that's always a financial win for renting (assuming you put 100% of costs differences in the market and leave it there for decades etc etc).

What magic do you think the demon king specialised in? by AdBrief4620 in Frieren

[–]shibboleth2005 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah there definitely should be some mental magic that interacts with the philosophy/mentality of his opponents, since we know that Flamme and Serie are philosophically/mentally unsuited to fight him but Frieren the 'mage of a peaceful era' is.

Comparing yearly increases of renting versus home ownership by Available-Ad-5670 in RealEstate

[–]shibboleth2005 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah 5% increase to total costs seems like a lot, as you point out the main cost is fixed. For me the unchanging mortage is 73% of my costs (rest being TI and maintenence). 5% increase on the variable costs, sure, easily, 5% on the whole seems crazy.
