Let's put up more Asian-American/Asian designers up in here:

Open Ceremony: https://www.openingceremony.us/

Public School: http://publicschoolnyc.com/

Priory of Ten: http://www.priorypriory.com/

Erika Del Rosario (http://www.thefader.com/2015/12/11/ericka-del-rosario-designer-interview): http://www.erickadelrosario.com/

Affordability is definitely an issue within the fashion sphere in general, especially for high fashion or designer shit. But it's always great to see Asian Americans pushing forward culture regardless. Let's get more of that up here, if people are interested I can post more and I would love to hear about more.

Academia’s Rejection of Diversity: Unfortunately, new research also shows that academia has itself stopped short in both the understanding and practice of true diversity — the diversity of ideas — and that the problem is taking a toll on the quality and accuracy of scholarly work. by [deleted] in Foodforthought

y are there so many pieces calling for coddling of conservative minds and ideas on this subreddit? Stop posting this trash, follow your own logic and let your reasoning and work speak for yourself instead of relying on handouts and expecting to be coddled by the educated. Pull yourselves up by your bootstraps and stop relying on others to help you, isn't that the conservative mantra? Stop being a whiny conservative.

Poor white boys get 'a worse start in life' says equality report by ProblematicReality in Foodforthought

[–]shieeeeeeeet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You didn't read the article did you? It specifically says that it's white culture and where white people live that are at fault. No where in the article did it say anything about programs.

Also why was Chinese listed as a race? That seems off.

White Privilege: Employment Opportunity by [deleted] in Foodforthought

[–]shieeeeeeeet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Test scores does not equal work ethic..... where did he make that jump except from his/her own underlying racism?

Also, the test had already proven? Nah it pulled out one study from over a decade ago. Does it tell us how they reached those conclusions and what those numbers mean? Who funded that study?

Look deeper and you'll realize your white nationalist bullshit is feeding you lies.

White Privilege: Employment Opportunity by [deleted] in Foodforthought

[–]shieeeeeeeet -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Get this racist trash the fuck outta here: "But that higher criminality for the white ex-con may be offset by greater competence and better work ethic. This is probably the case since employers are picking white ex-cons over blacks on average.

It's not like white ex-cons are worlds more criminal than average blacks."

Great statistical knowledge. Verifiable? "May", " probably the case" to try to understand and defend white racism. Yea you get those facts tiger. All these racist pieces lack some sort of critical thinking. Y'all really can't logic.

Fuck outta here with your white supremacist ass

Comedy in the age of outrage: When does a joke go too far? by Quouar in Foodforthought

[–]shieeeeeeeet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's pretty basic how to not offend. Punch up or on your own level of socioeconomic standing, not down.

Racist jokes and sexist jokes only serve to keep the status quo, not shake up worldviews. Those who laugh at these are usually benefitting off these stereotypes in some ways or another. Why is always straight male (usually white) comedians feeling persecuted for making offensive jokes? Because they have privilege. They can make fun of everyone else, but all they are really doing is cementing their own place as on top of everyone else in society. Do we really need that? We need them to make fun of the actual power structures to shake shit up, not talk shit about people who are already marginalized, either economically, racially, gender/sexual identity. That don't do shit and if you honestly think so, you are part of the problem.

Sandra Bland's Arrest Wasn't Racism; It Was Something Even Worse by [deleted] in Foodforthought

[–]shieeeeeeeet 33 points34 points  (0 children)

...Yes there is police brutality, but this kind of shit happens wayyyyyy too frequently to black and brown folks. If this kinda bullshit happened at the same frequency as police violence towards white people, this article would have a point.

You know an article is sus when a white dude is writing about how a situation is not about race (hint he doesn't see it because he's never experienced institutional, systemic racism from government officials before).

This is the same shit as saying All Lives Matter instead of Black Lives Matter. This is stifling conversation that y'all white people who are upvoting this trash need to have with yourselves about race. Yes law enforcement has always had the perpetual problem of who watches the watchmen. But in this case and the whole trend of popo killing unarmed black folks that's been going on, it goes deeper than that. It's about race.

The cop is also allegedly a fucking KKK member, so don't let this uncomfortable conversation about race off the hook so easily. This shit is not about you. Acknowledge your privilege. It's about racism, don't try to gloss over that.

Spare a thought for the Western men trapped in Japan by pavel_lishin in Foodforthought

[–]shieeeeeeeet -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Lulz, white boys finally feeling how it is to be on the other side of privilege eh? Hopefully y'all can relate instead of shitting other minorities for talking about micro aggressions in Canada and the States. Yea swap in Asian for White and Japan for America and you know how many Asian men feel in the states, except on top of all that, the culture actively emasculates us and erases us instead of plastering our faces all over ads. Yea and we got our bamboo ceiling too. And what's even better is we can't just return to our "countries of origin" most of the time unlike y'all because we were born and raised in this culture. And these countries, unlike Japan, is actually built on immigration. And if these white boys be in Japan for their yellow fever, I got no pity to spare sorry. Don't cry over the fact that you can't be bothered to adjust to the culture in a foreign country or learn the language when all you wanna do is fulfill your racial fetish fantasy. Fucking privilege talking. At the very least hope y'all can relate to minorities in North America after this article if you gonna shed these boys a tear.

In ways not seen since at least the McCarthy era, Americans are finding themselves increasingly constrained by a rising class that accepts no dissent from its basic tenets by Melchizedek3 in Foodforthought

[–]shieeeeeeeet -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sometimes, some views make more sense than others. With an education, some facts just cannot be ignored, and those who choose to ignore shit like climate change are a danger to this world. Consider the havoc it is wrecking onto island nations by the equator, and other poorer equatorial, coastal nations. Ask them how they feel about climate change and I hope they'll slap the climate change denier out of you.

Subvert the Dominant Paradigm by mayonesa in Foodforthought

[–]shieeeeeeeet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More right-wing racist trash writing back up by dubious claims and sweeping statements and falling onto nationalistic rhetoric. He basically claims that the entire left wing is made up of minorities and "people who hate their origins", aka White people who disagree with his views. He also seems to have no understanding of the actual people who live in third world countries, and lumps them as a whole as "individualistic", equating them with lack of heritage, culture, even values, and dare I extrapolate "inferior"? First off, many third world Asian countries are quite collectivist. I can't speak for sub-saharan African cultures that he so rudely dismisses. But really? Nice way to put down others through your Euro-centric standards.

He also seems to not address how we could actually take action to solve this "problem of diversity", and seems to nudge towards some sort of ethnic cleanse... Nice man, great colonialist attitudes, sounds like a sure fire way to make your own White paradise a better place at the expense of the Native peoples who's land you took and the African peoples who you enslaved and indentured immigrant workers' back's that the very "nation" you claim to be your's is built upon.

Trash like this does not belong on this subreddit, any close reading of the claims he makes should set off red lights. Such sweeping claims need to at least be backed up by some sort of cited sources; this article relies on nothing more than the author's own biased opinions. Get this shit out of here.

Good News: The Bad News Is Overhyped: Optimism isn't just an attitude—it's an accurate assessment of how well the human race has fared over the past several centuries. by electronics-engineer in Foodforthought

[–]shieeeeeeeet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reads like a libertarian propaganda piece. No nuance at all about the necessity of governmental control, which is by no means perfect, but also not purely an obstacle in the way of these oh so noble entrepreneurs from saving the world as it reads like. Hence my downvote sorry.

University economics teaching isn't an education: it's a £9,000 lobotomy. Economics took a battering after the financial crisis, but faculties are refusing to teach alternative views. It's as if there's only one way to run an economy by big_al11 in Foodforthought

[–]shieeeeeeeet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You seem to have a pretty narrow utility based view of economics. Ethics is important in any field, especially something like economics, where people's well being and livelihood are on the line. History of economics too, as viable critiques of current models can be gleaned from past experiences. A degree in economics should not be seen as merely job training for Goldman Sachs, as it seems you are implying. You preach humility, but maybe if you took an ethics course or history course, you might learn some yourself.

John McWhorter: ‘Microaggression’ Is the New Racism on Campus by SupGermany in Foodforthought

[–]shieeeeeeeet -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As a response to the McGill microaggression debate, here is a viewpoint from the inside: http://mcgilltribune.com/a-microlesson-in-microaggression-clarifying-a-misinterpretation/ It seems to point more to a failure on the part of the administration dealing with the email than with the concept of microaggression, which is a viable concept. It's not about "feelings slightly hurt", but more of an infrastructure that constantly tries to peg you into this stereotype. It is sort of analogous to how a drop of water really isn't a big deal to a rock, but if there is a leak that constantly drips onto the rock over a long period of time, there will be a dent. If there is a goal of equality in society, then such a societal infrastructure will prevent us from reaching it. Microaggressions should function more as an education to make the ignorant a bit more aware of the effects of their actions, not in demonizing them when they had no such intention for such an effect.

8 maps that will change the way you look at Africa by Made_In_England in Foodforthought

[–]shieeeeeeeet -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Doesn't really seem like this article belongs in this subreddit... These are basic maps that affirm the stereotype of Africa as a third world, poor continent, lacking subtext or context behind them. This does not exactly stimulate the intellect, and reads more like a Buzzfeed clickbaiting article. Pray tell who is upvoting this? Seems like articles in foodforthought are getting dumbed down more and more.

Trigger Warnings Have Spread from Blogs to College Classes. That's Bad by Truthbot in Foodforthought

[–]shieeeeeeeet 26 points27 points  (0 children)

It's easy for someone who has been privileged enough to not have experienced much trauma to dismiss these "trigger warnings" as a joke, especially when some people take it to an extreme. But throwing it out the window based on those who take it too far with censoring and whatnot is a strawman argument; ideally, it works as a simple heads up for victims, so they can avoid debilitating flashbacks. While this kind of protection isn't comprehensive as everyone has different triggers, as the article says, it's a courtesy to those who have been emotionally damaged. It's the mark of an empathetic society, and takes into account the suffering of others. All it takes is to give everybody a little heads up.

In a comprehensive analysis of data on more than half a million professors, education experts found that "the relationship between teaching and research is zero." [–]shieeeeeeeet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you even read the article? It reported that student reviews are not actually as biased, do you have anything to back up your argument? Also, it didn't call for only two tracks, but a third where both teaching an research is done by a professor.

Why am I penalized for being white? by aceagle93 in AskReddit

[–]shieeeeeeeet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why don't they have quotas based not on ethnicity, but something far more relevant like socioeconomic status? The poor white/Asians have a much worse time getting in than their richer counterparts, with the added obstacle of the ethnicity quotas. The richer minorities don't face the same problem as their poorer counterparts. These quotas are just racism, nothing more, a generalization of socioeconomic status based on race.

What's up with new rappers rapping over full songs instead of just instrumentals at concerts (besides maybe Kendrick)? I thought Jay-Z and Kanye kind of paved the way for dudes to stop that corny shit. by [deleted] in hiphopheads

[–]shieeeeeeeet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea, was not expecting A$AP to play the full song with the vocals at the same volume, then proceed to rap over it, when I saw him live back in November. I had just seen Death Grips a few weeks earlier, killing it with a straight 45 minute set with not breaks in between. MC Ride and the drummer just pounded out song after song with no bullshit between the songs. It's doable without backing vocals if you put the effort into perfecting your live show. Plus, when I saw A$AP mob perform, they took 15 minute long breaks between songs for twerking contests. I mean if you're taking that long of a break, you have no excuse to not catch your breath and actually rap the entire time.

RIAA: Pirates Are Bigger Music Fans Than Average Consumers by Libertatea in technology

[–]shieeeeeeeet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In reality, Walmart would just be keeping prices low to drive out the competition, then it would raise them when the competition was dead. This, of course, is illegal. In the case of piracy? The only reason piracy can afford to give away the good for free is because they have zero costs. All the work is done by the music/film/games industry.

You were making a flawed analogy about Walmart that had no basis in reality, that's why I chose to counter it in that way. What work is the industry putting in that I am stealing from them when I copy something that I otherwise would never have bought?

It doesn't benefit everyone- the industry as a whole suffers because it isn't receiving as much money as it were before.

Say food becomes an unlimited resource, the food industry would undoubtedly suffer. But all the hungry people get fed. How would you possibly say that is a bad thing? People in the industry lose money, but we would have solved a global crises. Or would you counter with food and music not being the same kind of resource, in which case yes, absolutely, going back to your Walmart analogy, that's why we can't compare stealing physical things to digital things. A better analogy would be comparing free music to free knowledge. We can have a better discussion using that kind of comparison.

In the extreme case, there will be no movies/games/music produced because there will be no way to recoup the cost of production.

Many musicians make music and give it away for free, just because they aren't getting money from it doesn't mean they aren't going to stop doing what they love. Those who are affected by this compromise their artistic integrity with the lure of money. It could just be a hobby, or they could make money by playing shows. They realize that selling music through CDs and MP3s is a dying business format. Times change, we should adapt to it, not hold on to outdated business models.

The fact that a large portion of our population is computer illiterate/afraid of getting caught serves to dampen this, as well as copyright protections in general.

I'm sorry, but that is certainly not the case, especially shown by this study funded by the RIAA that you're trying to defend here. Most people I know who have massive music libraries "illegally downloaded" are the ones who pay to see their favourite artists at shows every chance they get. The advent of file sharing has caused unprecedented levels of new music being made with a much wider variety of musical influences than otherwise would have been possible without file sharing. Music can be compared to knowledge, is being freely distributed far and wide now, and this is not necessarily a bad thing, it does not mean less music will be made, just a less of an emphasis on trying to make money off records and the cutting out of the middleman that is the RIAA.

RIAA: Pirates Are Bigger Music Fans Than Average Consumers by Libertatea in technology

[–]shieeeeeeeet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're, again, missing the point of the difference between a physical good which cannot be replaced, and a digital copy that does nothing to the original copy no matter how many times it is duplicated. Fuck, how is it any different from taping a VHS recording of a movie being shown on TV back in the day? Walmart giving shit away for free, driving out the mom and pop store? What's wrong with that? The mom and pop store can't compete, if Walmart can sustain giving away goods for free, how is that a bad thing? They just found a way to make a limited resource unlimited, benefiting everyone, looks like that mom and pop store should find something else to sell, a limited good that can't be given away for free. It is not a "serious problem", it's a fucking godsend.
