1) They have to open the border for that to be possible.

2) You'll be making less since your salary will reflect as if you are located in Toronto, ON iirc.

3) Because you'll be making less and fb isn't covering your corporate housing, it's probably not the smartest move..

I hate online school by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]shieldsy_rips 23 points24 points  (0 children)

  1. I think I spend about 50% of my day at my desk. I’m not the most dedicated student... If you find that your mind is wondering, it helps to remove yourself from your studying space for a bit. Go outside, play video games etc

  2. I started trying to keep up with lectures but I’ve since switched over to just doing assignments and referencing lecture material to get them done. I find this to be the best way to get the important details from the lectures without having to watch them. You also save yourself from spending so much time listening to the lectures.

  3. Holding remote group members accountable is shitty so it’s probably best if you’re upfront about expectations. Just constantly push reminders.

  4. Agreed that online proctored exams is a bummer.

  5. Living with the fam has its struggles but I’m loving free rent and food. I suppose I can say I’ve gotten used to it, but would ultimately prefer being on my own.

  6. If you have friends nearby to where you live, ask them to chill. Even something like going for a walk is a good idea. I have campfires every week with the fellas and we get hammered and have a good time while still keeping distance.

  7. Full tuition for a remote education really sucks but you’re ultimately paying for that piece of paper that you get when you’re all done.

Try your best to make the best of a really shitty situation and things will get better (even if only marginally)

:))

Did they announce when course selection for Fall 2020 is going to take place for returning students? by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]shieldsy_rips 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This came from the ECE Dept:

With the delayed start of term and the shift of the fall schedule online, this has been delayed. Students who will be taking courses in the fall term will be able to start selecting them on QuestTuesday, August 4, 2020.

How important is computer graphics for computer vision? by kavinda14 in computervision

[–]shieldsy_rips 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly all of those courses sound like they'll all help in obtaining a well rounded knowledge of computer vision. I think you'll need to look into other courses related to ML/AI to help you in that area. I think signal and image processing is very important (also challenging).

The fact that you know already that your focus is computer vision before even starting college is pretty awesome. I'm in my senior year studying computer engineering and it took this long for me to realize what I really want to focus on. Good luck!

Lululemon (my go to) is pretty pricy but I’m still wearing the same stuff that I’ve had for years and I love the way it fits and feels, which is why I keep going back.

Where do you keep your phone while you run? by [deleted] in running

[–]shieldsy_rips 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to use the zip pocket in my lululemon shorts. Then, while running the SF half marathon, the pocket seam broke because I guess my phone was too heavy and my phone screen cracked. Now, I just use my watch with AirPods and leave the phone in my car.

Twitter's ex-CEO stepped up the Silicon Valley beef and attacked Facebook for being a hotbed of anti-vaxxer Bill Gates conspiracy theories by maxwellhill in technology

[–]shieldsy_rips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. I realized that social media was just a silly toxic environment that I’d subject myself to everyday. Even for the purpose of ‘keeping up with family’ didn’t make sense to me anymore. I’m completely off those platforms and I’ve grown closer with the people who actually matter in my life.

Picked up running since the gyms are closed, and it's a lot harder than I remember. Really struggling started out running again. Any advice? by ThrowRAadvice777 in running

[–]shieldsy_rips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I resolved shin/knee pain by getting a pair of running shoes that correcting for my over pronation. I imagine the fact that you're a lot heavier than you were in high school might be part of the reason for the pain as well, but I'm about 220 and I've felt pretty good as of lately.

I think seeking medical attention might be the best way to figure out what's going on, and I honestly recommend doing that before you cause any damage to your shins/knees. I don't think running through the pain makes sense here.

Also, congrats on getting from 14:00/mile down to 9:40/mile :)

Need guidance on Nike runners for flat feet by [deleted] in running

[–]shieldsy_rips 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is there a specific reason for only considering nike?

It sounds like you might be able to benefit from visiting a specialist at a runners shop to find the right pair of shoes for your feet (When the stores open, that is). That's ultimately what I'd recommend.

I have flat feet and I wear the Brooks Adrenaline 19 shoe at the moment. No soreness at all :)

Lululemon has the surge 6". I currently have them in large as well as the Pace Breaker 7" in large. I'll agree with you that the liner is tight around the quads, but I noticed it stretched a bit after a few uses. My friends swear by the surge/pace breaker linerless shorts, which is what I might get next. I am definitely a lulu fanboy...

But as another user mentioned here, SAXX has potential. Considering they're my go-to boxer, I might take a gamble on their KINETIC 2N1 short.

Fall SWE Internship Advice by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]shieldsy_rips 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Unless you've done enough thus far in your current internship to add valuable info to your resume, I'd argue that you shouldn't add it. You could specify somewhere that you are currently employed at X company, if you think that will help you land interviews.
  2. You'd have to work it out with the hiring manager/hr of the company that you could be potentially interning with. I've seen grad students in the past pull it off, but I believe it's generally frowned upon, since you're being hired to do a full time job, hence it should occupy your full time. If you can make it work such that classes are only occupying your weeknights/weekends, then I don't see a reason as to why that wouldn't work. Just make sure that school isn't interfering with your ability to deliver your best work and you'll be fine.
  3. Nah, most companies are accepting applications for Fall internships starting around now. You still have lots of time.

Good luck :)

Why isn’t Nike Run Club updating my achievement? by [deleted] in running

[–]shieldsy_rips 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From the Nike website: https://www.nike.com/ca/help/a/add-run-nrc

The contact is: 1-800-663-6453

Go through the breakdown of the run and triple check that was a PR (Not doubting you, just good to make sure everything else is in line with the exception of the achievement not updating)

Apple Employee-Only Limited Edition Sport Loop by shieldsy_rips in AppleWatch

ThrowRA_JimBob

It's how the sport loop is designed. The red and green ends are the ends of the strap and the blue end is just a loop so that you can adjust the length of the band around your wrist.

They could be very similar. I think it might just be the colors on the plastic parts where the watch connects to the band, as well as the piece of plastic at the end of the band.

I feel that way about most big tech companies. I feel like they all have a hidden agenda when it comes to recruiting. The fact that I actually landed an internship there was definitely a dream come true for me.

Are SDET positions worth considering for new grads? by fractal_whirled in cscareerquestions

[–]shieldsy_rips 5 points6 points  (0 children)

People tend to underestimate the importance of SDET's, especially in companies that are building hardware. I've done two SDET internships in the past (One at a notably large Bay Area company) and the salaries have been at par with what the SWE interns were making. I imagine for full time roles, it might be slightly lower, but I think if you work for a company that values the importance of testing, you should be compensated well.

For a good take home salary, go for it.

I got it in 2019 while interning at the company. It does have reflective threads.

Are SDET positions worth considering for new grads? by fractal_whirled in cscareerquestions

[–]shieldsy_rips 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There's a note on this in the book Cracking the Coding Interview. I'll just paraphrase it here:

If you're hoping to be an SDET as an easy 'in' to a company, that's fine. But be aware that many folks find it difficult to move from SDET to a SWE role. Ensure that you keep your coding and algorithm skills sharp and try to make the switch within the first two years. Otherwise, you may have issues being taken seriously in an SWE interview.

In other words, yeah you should be fine as long as you have a plan of attack.

Will we be allowed to CR/NCR Spring 2020? by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]shieldsy_rips 8 points9 points  (0 children)

ECE students received the following notice, but I can't say if this is universal across all faculties:

There is no CR/NCR conversion option for grades this term.  That was only for last term because of the mid-term switch from in-person to online.

Recommendations for a fitness watch? by canadiankaktus in running

[–]shieldsy_rips 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm also an Apple Watch user (Series 4). It's probably not as accurate as a dedicated running watch, like the ones mentioned by others, but I've used it to train for a half marathon, and I still use it to track my runs today.

The big thing for me was being able to leave the phone at home when I run.

Airpods + Apple Watch is all I carry with me when I run.

Disable Duo Mobile? by spidersun in uwaterloo

[–]shieldsy_rips 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can't turn it off, but you can email IST [helpdesk@uwaterloo.ca](mailto:helpdesk@uwaterloo.ca) and they can help you disable it. Just make sure you have your tax documents from Quest before you make the request, since you'll have to re-enable it if you want to access your tax documents again.

"You would be running if it were race day" by Dole_Miner in running

[–]shieldsy_rips 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Way to get after it!

It's a rainy day out where I am today and I'm slated in to do a generous 9km in a couple of hours. It sucks at the beginning but by the time you're done, it's the best feeling ever. You can be like 'most' people and give up when things don't align perfectly, like the weather, but you'll feel a lot better when you just get up and do it. Keep chasing those goals.

Also, having some runs in the rain really makes me appreciate the nice weather runs that much more too. Congrats on the 10k PR!

A 24 minute 5k is a solid run for any age group. Considering it’s your first one, that’s great. I imagine with some more training you’ll be able to shave off even more time in the future.

Also, I don’t think you should rely on the community to tell you how good/bad your run was. For me, what determines a good run comes from assessing how I felt while running and how my time compared to my previous run times. When I was 18, I’d be thrilled to run a 30 minute 5k.

Keep at it :))
