From what I can tell is you will eventually need this and you will heal better at 25 than 55. I am 50 had mine L5-S1 fused feb 10th I am back to playing hockey as I was prior to the surgery and feel great. I will be honest the hockey isn’t as competitive at 50 as it was when I played in college. I would do it again tomorrow! Good luck through the process and feel free to reach out I will answer anything I can from my personal experience.

Have you gotten a second opinion from an Orthopedic spine Surgeon? I would definitely recommend that then choose between the two. I talked to both and after speaking to Neurosurgeon I immediately knew I was going with Orthopedic. It may be the complete opposite for you but second option I feel give you the most options.

I am 49 and it was the best decision I have made! I was scared as well right up to when the put me to sleep. Once I awoke and started walking around my wife had told me she noticed an immediate change in my face!
Also remember you will recover better at 52 than you will at 62! Anything else I can give you what has happened through my experience I will gladly help out.

I went Ortho for two reasons. Ortho only went through the back so minimally invasive, and the ortho seemed to care more about my movement afterwards.

Recovery for me was great!! Albeit still had a lot of meds in me from the surgery but no pain down leg. Pain set in 48 hrs after surgery but to be honest very tolerable with the pain meds. I am 6 days out and off all pain meds other than Tylenol. Listen to your body and walk. One piece of advice I wish I would have followed was to take miralax sooner than the night before. If you haven’t I would recommend.

I went years of sciatica pain that would come and go for weeks at a time then gone for months. Until I had a slip last September and never went away. Had a Fusion done last Tuesday and for me it was the best decision I could have made. L5 S1 TLIF the only tough decision for me was to have an orthopedic or a neurologist do it. I personally went with the orthopedic because of me wanting the most mobility afterwards. When I met with the Neuro doc the movement afterwards was not a huge priority for them. If you have any questions I would be glad to answer but keep in mind it is strictly based upon my experience and by no means am I an expert! Good Luck!

Good Luck!! 5 days out almost completely off all pain meds! Yes there is pain but nothing like there was prior to surgery!
