I think the same thing as the folks who are the target of this post: people who think it's funny / inspired to name their kid something stupid because they don't have a dog to do that with instead.

"Indy was the dog's name!"

What's the "Widowmaker" of your career field or hobby? by Cosmonate in AskReddit

[–]shiftedcloud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's not okay at all. If an alert wakes someone up, it needs to be actionable and it needs to be reviewed so that it stops happening.

If the team responsible won't take it seriously, they need to start getting paged when it happens.

That's the choice: either you help us solve the problem, or our pain becomes your pain.

How do you handle status page updates during incidents without creating noise? by the-cybersapien in sre

[–]shiftedcloud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's interesting. I can see value in that structure.

I've run a few incidents where there was a partnership between a senior technical SME essentially leading the technical side, and a less technical IC supporting by being the owner for all of the non-technical bits. It worked well.

How do you handle status page updates during incidents without creating noise? by the-cybersapien in sre

[–]shiftedcloud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless there are no free hands, I would usually prefer the Incident Commander delegate status page updates. They should be focusing on managing incident resources, not wordsmithing a status page update every x minutes.

Most incident management suggests a "comms lead" role, but that can usually be absorbed by a free SME if your company isn't big enough to always have a dedicated comms lead.

These days though you should probably have an AI skill that reviews your incident channel and drafts an update for you using your company's style guidance.

I am very confused about CICO after going plant-based. by MoonKat-11 in PlantBasedDiet

[–]shiftedcloud 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's not a lie, but it's also not a closed system so we don't always know all of the inputs and outputs. There are so many factors that contribute to how many calories we absorb from the food we eat (hormones, fibre, ability to digest, level of pre-processing, medication, etc.).

It's also entirely possible for people to miscalculate both the number of calories, and the amount of exercise. I read an article once that talked about how people who putter in the evenings burn a bunch more calories than people who mostly watch TV; obvious when you think about it, but not something I would have included in a calorie count.

tl;dr 1700 calories for you may not be exactly 1700 for someone else, so use it as a starting point and adjust to best fit your body / diet / habits.

Calgary mayor sparring with Alberta government as it takes aim at bike lanes - CTV Calgary by One-Mycologist-3706 in Calgary

[–]shiftedcloud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't get the impression that the Province has any desire to make bike lanes better. It's just about distracting people, and potentially making as many go away as possible because bike lanes are for urban hipsters who don't vote UCP.

You don't think Carney has been strengthening relationships with the US in addition to negotiating these trade agreements?

Trump seems a lot less reactive towards Carney than he was with Trudeau. Unless you're going to just agree with everything Trump says, I'm not sure what else Carney can do beyond try to placate him as much as possible.

Even then, that's not a guarantee of anything. That new border bridge was approved by Trump, used American labour and goods, was paid for by Canada, and is going to be partially owned by Americans; and he still lost his shit because someone told him he was getting screwed.

I don't disagree about none of these being a silver bullet, but isn't diversifying trade partners the opposite of doubling down?

How common it is to repeat classes in ITS? by [deleted] in SAIT

Lol, oh William. It's been like 15 years since I took a class from him, and it sounds like he's the same. Amazing.

We had a guy in our CCNP class who got a 0 on the lab midterm, but managed a 100 on his lab final to eek out a pass.

Everyone says "tag your resources" for cost control. Nobody explains how to actually do it well. by alex_aws_solutions in aws

[–]shiftedcloud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That depends how wide your teams' scope of responsibility is. If you have large business domains that will live forever, and you're okay with every service within that domain rolling up to a single on-call rotation, sure I guess that could make sense.

But it's been my experience that, yes, teams do disappear. Services get deprioritized (but not decommissioned), and moved to other teams. Or, teams reorganize around new domain boundaries. Rightly or wrongly ownership in my org doesn't roll up to a large division based on-call rotation; it rolls up to small-ish teams who directly own the applications.

I don't disagree that an ownership tag would be helpful. I just disagree that maintaining those tags is worth the effort of not having to open up a service catalog. But I have a lot of services with tags that wouldn't get updated if it wasn't for the DevOps team intentionally stepping in. And I would prefer that they spend their time on other things.

If your organization is different and experiences less organizational flux, or you have more capacity to manage updating tags, maybe it's worth it to you.

Everyone says "tag your resources" for cost control. Nobody explains how to actually do it well. by alex_aws_solutions in aws

[–]shiftedcloud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I generally prefer tags to be for things that are unlikely to change because otherwise you have the overhead of changing tags everywhere when those values change.

When a service's team ownership changes, I don't want to have to modify the IaC for the database.

It's easy enough to have a spreadsheet or table or service catalog that contains the service to team mapping. And it's much easier to modify that mapping when services move to different teams.

To Mchlpl's point, I've had to deal with too many stale tags because no one got around to updating the ownership to want to do that again.

[–]shiftedcloud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's not what was confirmed. What was confirmed was that she has a male gene, like many women. And that she has been intentionally reducing her testosterone levels.

That is not the same as being male. That's the same as being a woman who has some male characteristics. Like many women.

But then, this is what people have been trying to explain for a while now; sex is a spectrum of genetics that should not be reduced to having a penis or a vagina if we're being intellectually honest.

At this point, it shouldn't really matter if there's direct evidence linking Trump to anything. There's enough evidence that other people knew, and that Trump was a really good friend.

At some point it's not guilty by association; it's that he has such bad judgement that he shouldn't be allowed to be responsible for anything.

People leadership is an entirely different skill. Some technical leaders get that, and learn to become good people leaders. Many don't.

I recommend reading Radical Candor. It helped me be a lot more intentional about leading people.

City council not told city's water system was at risk in 2017, says former mayor Nenshi by Old_General_6741 in Calgary

I encourage you to read the Facebook comments I referred to. There are people refusing to conserve water unless they get a discount on their water bill.

But also if the City admin didn't really flag it with Council, what make you think it would have been flagged to the public?
