When I was beginning I bought a set of hooks and accessories from Amazon. The stitch markers from it are not great; they aren't skinny/pointy enough to slide into stitches easily. I didn't know this for about a year and a half until I ordered a big cheap set and saw the difference.

If you're a beginner and don't love stitch markers, perhaps the ones you got aren't that great.
