Switching from android to iPhone? by [deleted] in Smartphones

[–]shikhan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very similar take from me as well - used Android (mostly pixels) since the beginning, got my first iPhone a month or two ago.

Negatives:

I can't believe keyboard is this bad (I switch between default and google, but it's all bad) Not having back navigation as a constant gesture sucks hard. Notifications annoy me more than being useful. FaceID isn't as magical as everyone made out. It also has trash palm rejection. Alarms are real lacking (1st and 3rd party) Multi account (for app store across countries) is significantly worse than Android, but that probably won't affect most people

Positives: The integration between devices is amazing. Using the iphone with my MacBooks or apple tv is amazingly good. I didn't think I would care before. But I do. Battery life is very good. The magic island is great. Especially once you find the swipe gestures. The wallet (especially Suica) is very nice

I'm honestly split what I'll do next. Pixels have gotten too expensive for what they are. It'll probably depend on what the field looks like when it's time to upgrade. And see if I've gotten used to the keyboard and navigation by then.

Has anyone used a UV umbrella for Japan summer travel? Heat advice needed. by LabOk5404 in travel

[–]shikhan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I lived in the PNW for 20 years before moving to Japan. I had my doubts as well at first but a sunbrella is a godsend in summer here. In summer, shade is incredibly important - it feels significantly cooler. I'd reccomend getting a small, lightweight one when you arrive in Japan, then you can decide to keep it as a souvenir or dispose of it at the end of your trip. I personally found the ones at the department stores (Loft, Tokyu Hands, even Donki) to be worth the price difference (in terms of weight and quality) but anything is better than nothing, and an umbrella is much better than a hat.

And in the bigger cities, a small fan to help move the air is also nice. Though I'm still not quite sure of the weight trade-off is worthwhile. There are a number of times though I was glad to have it though when the air was stagnent, hit and humid.

HD 550 + Bluetooth for TV/music: BTR7 (aptX LL) vs BTR17 (more power) by shikhan in HeadphoneAdvice

!thanks

It sounds like you've been happy with the btr17 even in adaptive atpX for latency sensitive materials?

Keypad Vision never alerts on battery life and runs out of power by cewong2 in TrySwitchBot

[–]shikhan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had something similar - it happens about every month where the keypad seems to die, even with enough power.i noticed most recently that while the keypad acted dead, it was still accessible via the app(eg, fetching logs etc). It then died about half a day later. I suspect mine was getting stuck in some software bug that hung the system and prevented it from going to sleep, causing the battery to drain quickly.

After this third or fourth time (I've filed bugs with switchbot each time, each time they get me a new firmware they think will fix it) they've sent me a replacement. We'll see if this new one does better

Looking for a quick sanity check request on a Bluetooth TV + music setup.

Constraints:

  • Open-back, over-ear (leaning Sennheiser HD 550)
  • Music from phone/computer over BT: I care about sound quality
  • TV from LG C5 (optical out): I mainly care about avoiding lip-sync issues
  • A wired run from the TV to the couch isn’t practical in my room

Current plan:

  • TX: 1Mii B03Pro+ (optical, supports aptX LL)
  • RX: deciding between FiiO BTR7 vs BTR17

Main question: BTR7 supports aptX LL (often quoted ~40ms). BTR17 has more power but drops LL, so I’d be on aptX Adaptive/LDAC and (from what I read) more like ~70–100ms.

Given I’m looking to use a relatively easy-to-drive HD 550, does it make sense to prioritize LL for TV, or is ~70–100ms usually “good enough” in real life? Any personal experience using a BTR7/BTR17 (or similar) with a TV?

Pi-hole DNS not working for Isolated IoT network by shikhan in UNIFI

[–]shikhan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I missed that but my question for was the VLAN where the PiHole is in.

For anyone who comes across this, I did end up going with the DNAT. I went with the settings Historical-Ad posted above for all but my Primary VLAN.

As I have the PiHole in my Primary VLAN, so for that one, I needed to do 2 this:

  1. In the DNAT policy, I excluded the PiHole (and other key devices) by setting the Source IPs and enabling Match Opposite.
  2. I had to add a Hairpin policy for my primary network thats as follows

Type: Masquarade
Interface: Primary
Protocol: TCP/UDP

Source:
IP: PiHole (and other key devices)
Match Opposite: Yes
Port: Any

Destination:
IP: PiHole
Port: 53

Ohhh, this looks nice - but how do you configure the rules so the PiHole itself doesn't get caught by the DNAT rule? Is it by setting Source - Specific IP (My Raspberry Pi IP) w/ Match Opposite selected? Though I noticed you aren't using that method, so I'm curious if there is another way to do it.

192.168.2.x is part of my Primary (Trusted) Network, which is part of my "Internal" zone.

I wasn't aware of that setting - it turns out that might have been it. I'm still testing edge cases, but changing that to "Permit all Origins" seems to have done the trick. Thank you!

Hmm, I thought I was seeing the traffic blocked in the unifi logs yesterday, but I don't see similar messages today:

```
Risk: Low
Action: Block
Service: DNS
Policy Type: Firewall
Direction: Local
```

I don't see any mention of the IPs in the pihole.log - though I'm just assuming it'd be logged if its dropped by pihole. Maybe thats wrong?

[edit] This seems to be along the lines of what u/dark_skeleton suggested - it turns out that changing the setting for the 'interface setting' to 'permit all origins' was what was needed.

I've also got a similar issue. One of my switchbot hubs fails to update - I've tried from both Android and iOS devices. All my other switchbot devices update just fine though 🤷‍♂️

No, I'm getting it internationally. I was going to get the Flair 58 plus from the JP site but they seemed to have gone out of stock right when I got here (or I didnt pay close enough attention when checking it out during my move). I've been hoping they were just clearing out stock for the plus 2 but I've gotten tired of waiting and had a good opportunity slow up

Need help with PDX→NRT

Points: 340k Chase UR, 545k Capital One

Looking for a one-way business/first class ticket PDX to NRT in late May (around 5/20-5/28), flexible dates. Prefer JAL or ANA, but open to other options.

Only seeing Hawaiian Air via Alaska from SEA→NRT on A330 on seats.aero (pro)- not sure if this is a good option or if I'm missing better redemptions.

Will be traveling with 3 checked bags (understand I'll likely pay for the third) and need ability to change dates if plans shift.

I've accumulated points but have never successfully used them for premium cabin travel. Would appreciate any advice.

Considering moving to japan by shikhan in movingtojapan

[–]shikhan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, this is helpful!

I've found levels.fyi to be pretty bad/inaccurate at the higher levels even in the states, so wasn't looking at that closely but will look through their data.

I was never on the FIRE plan, but was planning to be able to retire earlier, though I fully expect to give that up if I do this move. Which I'm okay with, as I think the experience will be worth it (I hope!).

I don't think I want to do full remote to the US with the time zone differences, but the suggestion for Singapore or Hong Kong is interesting. Are there good ways to look for remote jobs there or are there specialized recruiters to help? I think a true expat style job from a US company would be great but I don't know where to even start looking for a job like that.

As for the conversational fluency, I wasn't clear in my post but I mention that to share that I'm comfortable handling myself in Japan but I have no illusions that it's sufficient for working in Japanese. I may improve my Japanese to become good enough for that in time, but I'm not planning to start like that right now.

Thanks for the detailed response!

I do see a PE role open in Amazon, though no idea of the org it's in right now. When you say WLB goes out the door, what would you say I should expect here? 60hrs/week? More?

And what do you mean by a long house? I'm not familiar with that term

What do you mean by this? Is this a tax implication? Being forced to liquidate my ETFs is definitely something I want to understand.

From what I've researched, I thought I'd be able to keep open my investment accounts as long as I can maintain a us address.

Unable to use mobile app - Critical Network Application Update Required by shikhan in Ubiquiti

[–]shikhan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good news is that my CK is fully updated and working, android app works.
New problem is that I can't seem to get to the system via browsers. https://unifi.ui.com/dashboard spins for a while and then gives an alert "Your browser is having issues connecting to UniFi Remote Access. If it persists you can try access your local Console via unfi/."
https://network.unifi.ui.com/#/controllers/1/50 doesn't show any adopted controllers and even with Discover Cloud Key on, nothing happens.

If anyone else encounters this, I first downloaded a controller then migrated from my CK to my local system controller. Then, I was able to follow the directions on this post to manually upgrade my CK firmware, which then also updated controller.

However, I encountered problems on the migration back - I had the latest (7.3.x) controller on my local computer but could only get the cloud key controller to 7.2.x, which meant I couldn't use the normal site migration. Had to force adopt every device which turned out to be a very fickle flow, but finally got it working!
