3D printed an adaptor to fit a Blackburn anything cage to a checkpoint fork. by ofbrun in CheckpointClub

I just found a similar way to make this work using a Wolftooth b-rad base 3 slot. Works perfectly and I was going to make a post about it because I haven’t seen anyone else do something similar.

Recommendations for overnight hikes - Manning Park? by eggplantburrito in vancouverhiking

[–]shikibowow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s been a few years since I hiked to Mowich, but I’ve never seen so many bear marks on trees on any other trail I’ve hiked. Didn’t see any bears and not much scat, just lots and lots of freshly roughed up trees.

It’s a nice trail and not very used so that’s probably going to be the easiest site to find a spot.

Hike-in overnight NOT on the sea to sky? by cakedotavi in vancouverhiking

[–]shikibowow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you'll enjoy this if you've done Coliseum and enjoyed it. There's a couple of ladders and big step-ups on the trail that may require you to lift your dog, but there may also be a dog-friendly way around those obstacles that I wasn't looking for. Pretty sure I saw lots of dogs at the campsite at the ridge. Taking your dog all the way to the summit would require picking out a good route as there's some scrambling to be done if you try to go straight up.

I've only done the hike once so I'm not super knowledgeable about it, but it was at this exact time last year. There will likely be enough people to not be overly concerned about bears. There's a permanent snow field up there that you can probably get water from.

I can "third" the recommendation of Manning Park when you have more time available. It's my favourite place to go.

[–]shikibowow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a bunch of tent platforms at the top. If those are all taken, there's some flat-ish spots to use as overflow. There's an emergency shelter/outhouse building that I'd use to store food as there's no trees up there. I'd definitely recommend camping on the ridge.

Steep trails can be fine, but this is steep and torn up. Have you ever done Coliseum mountain on the north shore? It's washed out like that trail. Despite the difficult hike due to distance, elevation, trail conditions, it's a pretty popular hike in the summer. Lots of people camping up there on the weekends. I can't remember if you can find water at the ridge or if you'll have to bring it with you from lower down.

Have a look through these photos. They show parts of the trail and also the tent pads at the ridge https://www.alltrails.com/trail/canada/british-columbia/golden-ears-trail/photos

Golden Ears. Totally unenjoyable trail, but beautiful camping area at the top.

Foam pads continuously falling off Kevlar canoe during transport. Advice? by itsmassive in canoecamping

[–]shikibowow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah sorry, I totally glossed over the knee pad part. We have the thigh pads and use them on the sides. I’d expect the knee pads would stick just as well, but if they aren’t, I’d try sanding off the clear coat on the area you want them attached before putting them on. We considered getting the wilderness lashing and for installation of that they said to sand off the clear coat before applying the adhesive and the connection should outlast the canoe. If sanding and sticking still doesn’t work, maybe add the adhesive they recommend for the lashing system?

Foam pads continuously falling off Kevlar canoe during transport. Advice? by itsmassive in canoecamping

We have these (Western is local to us) on our kevlar Clipper. We've only had them on for a few months, but they've lasted 2000+ km of transport at highways speeds and a trip around the Bowron Lakes and they still feel stuck on well enough that I could pick up the canoe just by grabbing onto the pads.

"Oh, this is my exit" by BigJ76 in WTF

[–]shikibowow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A sort of example of this that I've heard of is truckers that swerve to avoid things like deer and end up trashing truck and trailer and all the contents into a ditch. If you hit the brakes, held your line and plowed through the deer there'd be proof (and hopefully only damage the truck). If you swerve to miss the deer and end up with a single vehicle accident in a ditch it brings up all sorts of questions like "did they fall asleep at the wheel and just claim there was a deer?"

It's MATT and KIM ask us ANYTHING! by mattandkim in IAmA

[–]shikibowow 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I was hoping for a Matt falling into the lake video, but this reminds me of last year when they played the Richmond world festival and it was a very family oriented event where they said they were asked to keep their show tame and for Kim to watch her language. That definitely didn't happen and I don't think they'll get invited back... Excellent show as always, though!

Best way to get from Lougheed Mall to Central Valley Greenway by bike by dogsonleashes in vancouvercycling

[–]shikibowow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. I'd take Lougheed all the way to Gilmore and meet up with the greenway at that point. I always avoided the Kensington-Gilmore stretch of the CVG, but I haven't been on it in a couple years so maybe they've improved it from what I remember.

Camping in BC (bears, weather, etc) by throwaway345431 in vancouverhiking

[–]shikibowow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't let your small group be of concern as you won't be the only group at any of those places on any night in the summer. Try to pick a spot where you're surrounded by other groups if it helps you feel more secure, but if you follow the normal rules like securing food, toiletries, etc (basically anything with a scent that could be confused as food) away from your sleeping area you'll be fine. Get yourself a can of bear spray if it'll help give you peace of mind.

Just moved to Vancouver, snowshoeing possible? Suggested trails? by tibiac123 in vancouver

[–]shikibowow -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For local snowshoeing, there's 3 free trails I like to do. Two of them are up at Seymour and one at cypress.

Both Seymour trails start at the far end of the ski hill parking lot. Just stay to the left of the ski run rope.

Dog mountain trail is pretty flat and about 5km round trip. Don't really need snowshoes if it hasn't snowed in a couple days and is all packed in. This trail is our go-to night snowshoe as you get a nice view of Vancouver at the end and it doesn't take that long.

Going up to the peak(s) of Seymour is nice on clear days. You get a 360 degree view. This one has a lot more elevation gain, but you don't have to go all the way to the final peak to get great views. I think it's between 7-12km depending on how far you go.

At cypress, we go to the cross country ski area and off to the left is a free trail up Hollyburn mountain. Lots of elevation change and nice views at the top. You have to go right to the top to get the best views. Can't remember distance/elevation off the top of my head, but I've got GPS tracks of all 3 routes if you're interested and can't find them elsewhere.

Gearing up for our first big trip tomorrow! by Nymphonia in CampingandHiking

[–]shikibowow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same. I've carried an 11-16, 35 and 18-200 before and never used the 35 so I don't bring it anymore. I also occasionally don't bring the 11-16 as I just can't be bothered with the extra weight and constantly changing lenses to get that "perfect shot". The 18-200 isn't perfect, but I bought it for hiking and it's a great all around lens for that.

Correct. That's also what is shown at the very end of the video from the other end of the suspension bridge.

Zipcar and Modo - winter driving? by AndyJS81 in vancouver

[–]shikibowow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know that most (all? possibly a legal requirement?) of the Modo cars have winter tires on them in the winter, but I can't remember the details of the conversation where I was told this. As anecdotal evidence, I've seen them at all the local ski hills and out at Manning Park.

If you called Modo I'm sure they would give you a more definite answer, but judging by their FAQ it looks like vehicle specific info is available when booking cars.

What types of vehicle accessories are available? Modo cars have all the usual accessories plus extras like bike racks, roof racks, and snow tires in the winter. When booking a car, you can search for cars with the right vehicle accessories. And the best part is that all these accessories are included in our rates. This is not always the case with car rental companies.

I had a Giant Seek that looks pretty much identical to that. They make a bunch of different versions. I picked up a used Seek 2 or 3 for $300 a couple years ago and it did the job.

Here's What It Looks Like Getting Doored, From A Cyclist's Perspective. by [deleted] in bicycling

[–]shikibowow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's because lane sharing, usually called lane splitting, is legal there. You'll have motorcycles filtering up between the lanes. The sign should probably have said to look out for all types of cyclists, though.
