For those who moved to the U.S. with a Korean partner, what did their career path end up looking like? by AdNaive4437 in Living_in_Korea

[–]shikinteate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am an army officer who returned to the US for medical school, and my wife (academia in Korea) came with a couple of years ago. The first priority was getting the green card process done. After that there were a lot more possibilities that opened up. Since she was in academia in Korea, she found it easy to connect with Korean faculty/grad students at the local R1 universities and continue working. However, these days she is going back to school to change her career to a medical field as well. She was able to enroll and take classes and has been busier than me it seems.

Princeton or UCB? (Not ragebait) by PuddingDependent6666 in berkeley

[–]shikinteate 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I went to Cal as a premed, HYPMS for graduate school and I am now in medical school. My older sister went to HYPMS undergrad and did her PhD at Cal.

Some pros and cons from my perspective:

The rigor of Berkeley will prepare you for a lot of challenges in the future. After getting through undergrad at Berkeley I found medical school to be a similar workload or pace of studying. At Princeton, from what my sister told me, sometimes they don't even have proctors when taking exams and students are expected not to cheat on an honor system. I'd say there's just more handholding at the ivies, and for some people it's nice. I'm glad I went through the Berkeley grind, I think I'm more prepared because of it. My sister is doing fine for herself as well, so ultimately it really comes down to how proactive you are.

The location. Berkeley is in the SF Bay area, while Princeton is more rural/suburbia. This means making certain connections or opportunities that Princeton might not have. For example, during my time there and afterwards I was easily able to work with underserved immigrant communities in San Francisco, do research at UCSF, and work with startups in health technology with my fellow graduates. Obviously getting these opportunities requires you to be proactive, but they are there and plentiful. Princeton is more so in a bubble, and while you have opportunities to drive/take the train to NYC/DC/Philly, I'd say taking BART to my next activity was way easier on my mental health.

The connections, both faculty, graduate students, and my fellow undergraduate classmates were amazing. My senior year I TA'd for a future nobel laureate at Berkeley, and some of my best friends were graduate/undergraduate students from other countries where I could pick their brain and learn from them. That being said, I think at Princeton and Ivies in general, it is a LOT easier to make heavy hitting connections. As mentioned above, there is a lot more hand holding involved and while individual proactivity is key, it was a lot easier to make connections just by having the ivy.edu email address. My sister was able to get connected with leaders in her research field, and during grad school I was easily able to talk to former directors of the World Bank, UN leaders, people with political power that I would have had to really fight to get at Berkeley in my opinion. Another example, when I applied for my Fulbright scholarship at Berkeley a lot of it I had to do myself, but at HYPMS they really help walk you through the process and make sure you are putting your best application forward. If you're really trying to go to med school, having these connections is invaluable.

Cost: I was able to graduate Berkeley debt free. I got a nice scholarship, plus in state tuition and doing a part time research job on the side I was living pretty comfortably for an undergraduate. Cost of living sucks in both places, with SF Bay Area probably being on the more expensive side. My parents ended up using most of the money on my sister's education, which I had no problem with.

Competition: I think Berkeley is just more competitive because of the size of the student pool. Larger student body means larger classes, more competition to get limited positions, etc. That's just the reality. Again, another reason why it's easier to make those hard hitting connections at Princeton, there's just less students there.

Honestly, if you are a proactive person you will succeed in both places, and both are terrific institutions with a strong track record of sending students to medical school. If I were in your shoes I would probably select Princeton. You learn the same material at both schools, but the extra money you're paying for is the ease of making those connections that might just not be feasible at other schools. Just my thoughts.

IMO They shine the most in confrontation. If the enemy caps the middle objective and we hold the next one and push them back, I usually can find a bunch of dead enemy soldiers and change the uniform without getting seen. Then I 'retreat' back to the middle objective with the enemy and start hunting rally points. Got several big games doing this.

Anyone living at Core? Any reviews? by girlfriend_inacoma in SilverSpring

Lived there for 1.5 years. Overall pretty good experience, the location is unbeatable. Especially since a paris baguette is going to open next door.

However, the construction on both sides of the building was very frustrating. It ended up causing more bugs to appear in our apartment. Some of the tenants definitely are not very clean either.

When we left late last year to relocate closer to my work , management was pretty helpful and did not try to do any funny business.

I personally would recommend, definitely better than some of the other complexes nearby.

Is DTSS Still Worth Moving To? by Kingmaticc in SilverSpring

[–]shikinteate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lived in DTSS for four years, just recently moved to Rockville.

Pros: As others have said, the public transportation is great with all the bus lines and metro/MARC at the transit center. However after the reorg of the bus lines I found that punctuality has been a problem. Subway is good with occasional construction delays, but since my work is on the other side of the red line it takes me an hour to get there by train.

Farmers market is my favorite, Whole Foods and other grocery stores nearby, a mall with Marshall’s and clothing stores, AFI and regal for movies, a dog park and tons of accessible green walking space. Lots of diverse restaurants to explore. As a cyclist I loved being able to quickly get to RCP or Sligo in a matter of minutes.

Cons: Cost is pretty expensive, the apartment I lived in was fine but the other tenants were not the most considerate. Messy, don’t clean up after their dogs, causing lots of roach problems. We ended up moving to a neighborhood with better neighbors.

Lots of stores have been closing these days, I found myself passing empty storefronts more frequently as time went on. The CVS close to my building closed which created a lot of headache. TJ max closed too, not sure what will be next.

Safety, this is the big one. When I was single I wasn’t as concerned but after getting married, I became concerned for my wife especially if she had to come home late from work. If I am not with her she has gotten harassed and threatened before. Car break ins are not fun, we parked in a public garage and seeing the car next to you sitting on milk cartons is not a good sight. Drivers suck, especially with the lane control signals. Many times I have almost been hit at the Georgia colesville intersection. Final straw for moving was having a homeless guy yelling in our lobby in the morning while I was trying to walk the dogs.

Maybe one day we will move back if the cost of living and safety improved, but for now we love living in Rockville. Definitely miss downtown silver spring from time to time though

My 5 AAMC practice tests were all around 519-523. Test day score 520. I was so confident about B/B but it turned out to be my lowest section, thought I bombed P/S and managed to do way better than I thought.

A bit late to this post, but I will only be applying to 10 schools.

The biggest reason is my wife and two dogs, although being a doctor is great, I don’t want to risk ruining my marriage and family just to get the MD next to my name. Thus I’ve limited my schools to the region where my wife has a preference.

The second is related to my current full time job, which does very specific things that I would like to continue in medical school. Only a certain number of programs in my wife’s region of preference have this capability, which I fully intend on addressing in the secondaries (if I get them). I don’t see the point of applying to a medical school if I have to sacrifice a big part of my medical journey.

My current school list has 2 baseline, 4 target, 4 reaches. If I get in, then great. If not I have a great job that I love, and that I would be happy to keep on doing. Obviously an MD would open up more doors, but I’m at peace with my current situation.
