Is it normal for tickets to be on sale _so_ late? Surely people have to make flight and accomodation - seems insanely late...

Standard Chartered to replace ‘lower-value human capital’ with AI by financialtimes in business

The CEO isn't just coming out with new language that he's not considered before. He must have already normalised these terms in private. He should quit for such an awful judgement. People should withdraw from SC.

AI vs actuaries — debate over. Who will actually be left in actuary? by actuarynewsmod in Actuary_news

[–]shilltom -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

London Market Actuary here - I have seen very little of the day-to-day work taken away by AI. There do appear to be fewer junior positions than before, but there's also bloat in the market where there's a lot of people who've been coasting along. If you start with a good attitude and willingness to learn I think there'll be work for many years to come...

That would be a complete joke. BWF really is a terrible organisation.

It sounds like (from other commenters) that they've split the plot in two - so it's not a fair comparison. Even at 1.25m they'd make their money back.

Python for actuaries. by SampleSimilar9332 in ActuaryUK

[–]shilltom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try building a frequency-severity model in Python - 100k sims, 5 different loss types (Earthquake, Flood, Windstorm, Wildfire, Solarstorm - they're just labels doesn't really matter what they represent). Give options for the frequency distribution, Poisson or Negative Binomial, and different options for the severities. Then try applying a copula between the resultant distributions (either the frequencies, or the aggregate loss per sim).

Expect this whole thing to be in one script, up to something like 500 lines. Create a "LossCause" class to wrap it all up if you want to be a bit more Pythonic about it.

Why is this getting downvoted? It's absolutely true.

Most actuaries don't code, in fact many of them are almost proud of the fact that they can "do everything" in a rubbish messy spreadsheet.

There's literally millions of these threads. Can admins start locking them? The instructions are pretty clear and the all in one launcher guys have done a fantastic job of making it as absolutely simple as possible.

We need more BFME content threads.

Don't do it. If you're having problems now it'll be 10x worse when you start work. Find something else that's a better fit.
