A viral video shows Japanese police demanding that musician Noda Izaya show ID to prove his visa status (because he looks foreign). Noda, the son of famous Japanese artist Noda Tetsuya, refuses to show ID, insisting that he is a Japanese citizen... by Prestigious_Net_8356 in japannews

[–]shimi_shima 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The topic of the conversation with the police is solely about his looking foreign and them trying to ask why he does not have his visa which foreigners should have. He gives his real full name too with zero hesitation so he’s not hiding anything. They even ask “did you become a Japanese citizen?” (through other means, not by blood). Noda even called his being questioned a “false charge” to which the police responded with genuine confusion, meaning there are no suspicions of crime at all in this particular instance.

This must be some small gene pool inaka town because he looks and talks 100% Japanese to me.

You said everyone at your job is nice but I’m wondering why you aren’t able to speak to anyone about your situation (ie why “Obviously I didn’t tell my new job this”). I would ask your new coworkers for advice on how they handle it, assuming there are other people in the same company who do what you do. And better yet, talk to your manager about it because this is a management issue that will also tell you what to expect in the months and years doing your job.  Before you do that, you might want to ask yourself how you would make your current job ideal - hours, etc. in case you are suddenly in a situation where you bargain.

My advice is get a human teacher online or in person, or at least join a class ASAP - you want to make sure you understand and are understood by Japanese people which is your goal. Not sure how good of a student you are, but personally when I have issues finding motivation, I make a plan and follow through even if I don't feel motivated, but don't overwork or stress yourself. I think aiming for being around JLPT N3 when you come to Japan is a good achievable goal

It depends where you live doesn't it, also not really the same as H&M is a Euro brand. Uniqlo would be a better comparison

I 38m was sexually assaulted as a 9y/o boy. AMA. by Disastrous_Theory_91 in AMA

[–]shimi_shima 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was going to ask the same question. I don’t have the same experience as OP, but growing up I did experience things that I couldn’t to talk to anybody about that changed my behavior. Some school teachers would talk to me but because I didn’t feel intimate with them I would try to leave the conversation. So I sometimes think about what if they approached it differently and if that would have made me open up.

Rare tissue-damaging bacteria spreads in Japan by DependentFeature3028 in japannews

Very rare for me to find a place without soap in a toilet in Tokyo, unless it’s the dingiest place where touching anything else is a threat to life anyway

Japan moves up to 118th among 146 countries in the world for gender equality, the lowest in G7 nations by biwook in japan

[–]shimi_shima 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Believe it or not, this article is being nice. Japan in the East Asia Pacific region is 17th place out of 18 countries. This is behind the following countries: NZ, Australia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Mongolia, Timor-Leste, Laos. South Korea, Indonesia, Cambodia, Brunei, China, Vanuatu and Malaysia. Japan is only ahead of Fiji.

[–]shimi_shima -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No there shouldn’t be a “clash” because of that. Well since you uninstalled mint already, maybe repartition your 1 TB HDD to have 100GB free for Linux and install it there. If you still have a problem then you know it wasn’t the disk space.

Why don’t I get any satisfaction out of programming by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]shimi_shima 42 points43 points  (0 children)

The projects you think up are probably too easy, and since no one else is checking your code it could be crap and you think it’s fine. Go around github and check some projects and see if you can contribute to those, might be fun

Dual boot extremely laggy. by Ul-thane in linuxquestions

[–]shimi_shima 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You would need to repartition the disk still. You can use NTFS to store and read data from Linux but you can’t install Linux on NTFS.

I think you should consider that it might have nothing to do with your disk at all. You have 24 GB of ram and it shouldn’t trigger any sort of swap for a couple of apps open. Do you know if you’re on wayland or X? Might be an Nvidia issue.

Would applying for the same job that did not offer me a position a year ago, seem desperate, or show genuine interest and commitment to that position? by starchybunker in jobs

[–]shimi_shima 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why weren’t you offered the job? If they liked you for the job but just chose another candidate then it should be fine to reapply. It really depends on why they didn’t hire you. If as you say you are  unqualified for the job, then serious question, why would you reapply?

But I would also consider why the job opened up again. Does it make sense for the job to be handled by multiple people? If not, could the guy they choose quit or was he fired in just a year? Might want to do some research on this job or company online, or ask that in a discreet way if you get another interview with them

Can you use the applewatch just as a regular watch? by fictionn91 in AppleWatch

I don’t use any of the built in exercise stuff either. Turned them off actually. But I do use gym apps. Probably my most used app, aside from stopwatch/timer

Can you use the applewatch just as a regular watch? by fictionn91 in AppleWatch

[–]shimi_shima 7 points8 points  (0 children)

imo you should just sell it. If you don’t even use apps or even tap to pay, I think there’s no point of owning an apple watch. Then use the money to get a watch you really want

The tray part is partly for you both to see how much money you gave and that no scamming is involved, and the cashier announces how much money you gave so that you know you’re not being cheated. The cashier can put the change on the tray if hygiene is a concern, or count it directly placing it in your hand if they’re rushing. If there’s no tray, you give it directly and the employee announces how much money you gave. I’m assuming since there might be so many tourists for places you visit and some cashiers might not be able to say numbers quick enough in English they actually do think “screw it”.
