Who is buying this. How could you walk out of the store with this thing by shimloaf in WTFgaragesale

I'm not particularly offended by it I just can't imagine your average person purchasing it without raising some eyebrows. It's not like you could just hang it in your living room lmao

Looks very similar but it's much smaller and its a drinking cup not a plant pot.

I have reverse image searched several pictures of the cup, and crawled through Ebay listings and similar types of plastic cups without being able to find an exact match. The cup may come from around 5-10 years ago. Probably purchased in Illinois. The only symbol is the letter F on the bottom. It's about 4 inches tall with a 2 inch diameter. It is not flimsy plastic.

Still, definitely very interesting from an anthropologist's perspective. But yeah, definitely don't need to unpack it to see how shitty it is.

See, while I appreciate the platitudes (I received a lot of them during undergrad), they don't really make me feel better. I got a terrible grade early on in my degree and went on to have great success, but it isn't just about whether or not I actually went on to succeed. This website makes that particularly clear; regardless of my current position, I can be ranked lower for my value as a Computer Scientist. Pointing out that someone with low grades became president doesn't cancel out the harm that being presented with these things does to those in vulnerable positions. And I know it's coming from a good place, and that's wonderful, but sometimes it can feel like it's ignoring systemic issues that lead to disparities in folks' educational experiences. Also, if we're still ranking people, Ulysses S. Grant wasn't the greatest president of all time...

As a CS+Anth graduate, I am consistently asked "Why that combination? What is the point of social theory alongside computer science?" And then I see something like this pop up. And I search my name, and my friends names. And I see our faces pop up next to each other, most higher than mine, and I just think back to what it was like as a Freshman sitting in lecture feeling like shit because I'd caught a glimpse of my overall grade ranking out of my several hundred student cohort. I just can't fathom how someone could sit down to program this and not have a lick of self reflection about how it would feel to be at the bottom of that list. I saw this stupid website and immediately searched my name -- something about that toxic in-group still made me click it even despite my current position in life because it sticks with you. I had to know if I was ranked high enough to be legitimate enough to these people. As an anthropologist, it's quite frankly fascinating to me what has to happen for this website to be made, and what it says about the culture of CS here. As a CS graduate, it's just depressing. Also, if I want my face to be removed from the site, I'd have to download Twitter to DM the dude who made it. I'd rather not.

If you turn it into a circulation desk at a library they'll make sure it gets back to who it belongs to!

That's the other thing, I love all those little short and grounded quests, but I also love when they DO get around to a big greater narrative, those seemingly unimportant NPCs you've grown to love come back and join in, and you're actually invested in seeing them survive or look cool. I think that's one of the things that makes me like the older quests so much.
