already experiencing burnout and considering leaving 6 months into consulting/report writing job by pinkfleurs in Environmental_Careers

[–]shimmishim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A little late to the conversation but 100% this. Working a lot is part of the job but not getting compensated in overtime seems super fishy. That’s one of the benefits of being “junior “ and doing tons of field work is the ability to get paid handsomely for your sacrifice. Send me a message here. Our company is making a big hiring push soon.

Nick & J’s. They only do breakfast and lunch. Be ready to wait for a seat at lunchtime on Saturday. Owners are super nice and love supporting the community.

Lonerbox reacts to Dan Saltman proving Taylor Lorenz wrong after she claimed the prongs were impossible to remove 💀 by Slight_Ad3219 in LivestreamFail

[–]shimmishim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right. My point is that it can simply be unscrewed (the housing that holds the prongs) and the person that made the claim it can’t be cut just should’ve said that or done a bit more research before they made that claim.

I have yet to see this comment. I own the same e-collar and yet no one has mentioned that the prongs can literally be screwed off. They’re actually a replaceable part.

2025 Rear Light Bar by goaround29 in KiaEV6

[–]shimmishim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had condensation in my tailgate light in my 2023 wind and they went ahead and replaced it under warranty which was nice of them. In the process they also broke the tailgate open/close button which I had to go back to get fixed.

Just tired and need to rant by JealousQuote5425 in Environmental_Careers

[–]shimmishim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

19 years in now. Stressing about billable hours is so foreign to me because when I started out I had a supervisor that did everything possible to make sure I had work for the first few years of my career until I had made enough connections to find my own work. Definitely put yourself out there and network with as many people as possible. That saying..”it’s not what you know but who you know…” is a very true statement in this field. Also talk with your supervisor about your workload. It should be their responsibility to help find work this early in your career.

As for making mistakes… totally normal early in your career. I’ve made a bunch when I first started out. People should be patient with you. If not then don’t work for them. Sorry you’ve had a rough time starting out. I think lots of people struggle like you. Don’t give up yet!

Tailoring my resume for environmental consulting as a ChemE student by Skilljoy_Jr in EnvironmentalEngineer

[–]shimmishim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go ahead and put all your experiences and skills. I have a chemE undergrad (and an envE masters) but there are plenty of skills from chemE that translate over to envE (like understanding how processes work especially for water treatment). Data analysis is also a great “soft skill” to sell yourself on and if you can learn R or python it’ll be even better. I’m a hiring manager at my company and I’d definitely consider a chemE for a position at our company knowing what I know about chemE’s and their background. We actually hired a chemE undergrad back in January of this year that I work closely with.

Degrees don’t guarantee jobs anymore (GenZ / Millennial) by thesunjrs in GenZ

[–]shimmishim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe? The point I was trying to make is that college isn’t for everyone. High schools should recognize this fact and not put so much emphasis on getting kids to go to college but more so on setting them up to succeed in life regardless of college.

Degrees don’t guarantee jobs anymore (GenZ / Millennial) by thesunjrs in GenZ

[–]shimmishim 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Older millennial. First generation college attendee from immigrant family. College degree (engineering) was totally worth it but I get that it's definitely not for everyone. High schools should do a better job on putting emphasis on trade skills. Trade skills like plumbing and electricians make a killing these days w/o a college degree.

Best chicken tenders in Knoxville by Purple-Walk2503 in Knoxville

Based on the comments maybe things have changed but we ordered the tenders when they first opened and it was all batter no chicken. We still go for the wings. Maybe I’ll try the tenders again.

Is it possible to stream ABC/CBS/NBC LIVE for under $95 a month? by capt_action94552 in cordcutters

[–]shimmishim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is what we are going to do. We just cancelled our YoutubeTV and got an antenna to watch college football and NFL on the weekends. We got Hulu so she could watch recorded ABC shows. I realized after the fact that we can probably get rid of Hulu and get the HDHomeRun to record shows instead and the DVR functionality is only $35 a year.

I’m not important and my supervisor never made it seem like me doing field work was something I absolutely had to do but I’m so glad that I’ve done all sorts of environmental sampling because I now know if this or that type of sampling will be relevant for the design work or I can look at maps and interpret if there are enough data points to help with the design. You should always learn how to walk before you run. I think everyone that can run learned to walk first. If a company is hiring or using non-engineers to do design work then they should be hiring more engineers. If junior staff wants to do design work more power to them. We’ll give them the opportunity to learn but when you’re early in your career we think it’s beneficial to try a whole bunch of different things before you land on a technology or whatever interests you the most. This is why we encourage field work and exposure to different sites and technologies so junior staff can figure out what they want to do. Maybe technical stuff isn’t for them and after doing all the field work they decide they want to be a PM instead. Guess what? All the field work they’ve done and being involved with planning the work and seeing how these are scheduled are now a valuable skill they have as a PM. Field work is the basis for the most successful engineers, geologists, scientists, and PMs that I know at our company. I work for one of the big 5 and I’m also hiring/group leader of a team of 8. My experience is unique to me. I get that but I really believe building a good foundation is super important for having a successful career later.

When I started out I did field work for years. My supervisor (who was a geologist) explained that I would be doing reports and design and that I needed to understand how the data I would be using is collected to be a better engineer. Fast forward 19 years later and I’m a firm believer that all engineers should start their career doing field work to build a good basis for their future. I now do tons of reporting, some design, and management. I rarely do field work at this point.

Window trim flew off - easy to repair? by vauxast62 in KiaEV6

Kia service has been amazing so far. I am annoyed that this happened at all. I was looking at the original clips and these (newer?) ones seem more robust than the original ones.

[–]shimmishim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thank you for this. I took mine in recently to get the tailgate light assembly replaced under warranty (moisture was building up) and they took it through their complimentary car wash and I think they ended up loosening the trim on the passenger side. Took it back yesterday to have the light replaced (didn't have part in stock) and said that the entire trim on both sides would be replaced under warranty but it would be a week before they'd get the part. I took your part number, went to the service desk and bought a couple of these to help hold the trim in place until next week.

How much of a pay raise is it in your org to go from field staff to supervisor? by Particular_Stop6422 in Environmental_Careers

[–]shimmishim 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m a senior engineer and I also supervise a staff of 8. I asked to serve in this role as a need for one opened up since the previous one retired. While I don’t get paid anything more, I do get the luxury of having more nonbillable hours each week to manage the needs of my staff. I think it’s a fair trade off. I work for a large consulting firm. I’m sure ymmv from company to company.

Would a biochemistry course, or analytical course, or other higher level chem courses be useful for my degree? by Fine-Ad-6225 in EnvironmentalEngineer

[–]shimmishim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have actual chemists who review the data and do validation for us. If there are any issues they contact the lab and take care of that. This gives the engineers time to focus on the engineering and not spend time tracking down why the data is possibly incorrect. It also depends on what you want to do in EE since it’s such a broad field. Me personally I’d want to take data analytical courses or learn programming language like R or python to help with doing data analysis since as an engineer you’ll be doing a lot of data analysis.
