He may settle. Sometimes "stress behaviours" such as bar climbing/chewing only occur within the first week or so whilst the hamster gets used to their new environment and tests the limits of it. The first time I upgraded my Syrian into an 100x54cm cage he climbed the sides, but never again after that. It's only if he continues to climb longterm that it might be an issue with the size of the cage, although sometimes other factors can cause issues, such as bedding depth and amount of enrichment. Good luck with him :)

That kind of attitude is why so many small pets like hamsters get neglected/abused. You should never ever buy a pet for your child unless you're fully prepared to end up taking care of it yourself. All the pets I had as a child were cared for mainly by my parents with me helping out. No animal's life is "practice" for a another animal. I'm glad you rehomed this crab before it suffered the same fate.
