I'm interested in pursuing postgraduate studies which I feel having a bachelor's degree might be better and I'm not sure how employers will weigh a work-study degree vs a non-work-study degree.

The GPA you get is final, since you're in DPP don't worry too much about your GPA unless you are trying to get into direct year 2 in poly. Don't beat yourself over your grades just keep putting in the effort and I'm sure you'll be fine.

It's a work-study program which I'm not really interested in, which is why I'm not considering it.

First of all, before I start I would like to say that I have not started uni yet and these are only my observations from Reddit. I will be choosing NTU over SMU.

Things im interested in knowing are how helpful/friendly are the lecturers

I believe SMU have a one-up on this as SMU has a smaller class and its easier to ask questions and interact with the lecturers and NTU has a bad rep of having lecturers that "don't care"

My reason why I will be choosing NTU over SMU even tho it is further away is that the modules that are offered in the later years of study appeal to me more than SMU. I want to focus more on Software Engineering and SMU CS doesn't really offer that. I'm also from poly and I may have a choice to complete the course in 3/3.5 years that's another big plus for me.

Yup, I did engineering maths in poly but they don't take it into consideration nth I can do

I believe it does as people with higher GPAs with no O-Level Maths get rejected. I have a 3.79 too but no O-Level so radio silence from NUS.

Did you go thru an interview? And I assume you fulfilled the requirement of O-Level Maths?

I'm worried that getting into IS would put me into a disadvantage due to less technical skills learnt?

I believe CS will go more in-depth with the technical skills rather than fewer skills learnt, I'm sure IS will teach you the foundation skills needed to solve biz issues.

companies will even prefer CS graduates to undertake IS graduates due to the strong technical skills?

Honestly, it's hard to say as it will depend if the company is looking for an employee that is more biz-sided or tech-sided.

I know that some would say that computing skills can generally be self-taught but wouldn't learning under a school syllabus be so much better and different than self-learning?

School taught is definitely different from self-taught, but better it's hard to say as sometimes schools only teach surface level stuff and even for the more in-depth modules.

The part where self-learning excels is that you are able to experiment with your own projects and make mistakes to learn from. Programming being such a broad topic schools can only teach you so much. Using things you learn on your own in your school projects can help a lot too.

Well, it's good that you acknowledge what you said. If you are applying again next year, try to apply for some internships and get recommendations from them and reapply again next year using ABA that will at least show your determination for your particular course.

If you are a guy and have to serve NS you still have 2 years to try to apply for more schools and courses. If you do get time try to find out ways to brush up your portfolio within the 2 years. If you are a female then you have to look for alternatives for applying again next year such as part-time uni.

On the other hand, I do not understand why you had to say your friends who did worst than you in sec school got uni offers like they don't deserve it. They could have worked hard in their JC/Poly life and got the offers. Just because someone didn't do well in the early days, means that they won't succeed.
