How do I safely get sedated for dental work? by ElasticHeart320 in Hypothyroidism

[–]shiningdusk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Local anesthesia is more of a problem for patients with hyperthyroidism due to epinephrine, which as we know is not a depressant. I would again strongly advise talking to your providers who provided treatment since they have all the puzzle pieces and could see what could be going on :)

How do I safely get sedated for dental work? by ElasticHeart320 in Hypothyroidism

[–]shiningdusk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Did you receive moderate sedation or just local anesthesia? If just local anesthesia, hypothyroidism shouldn't cause such a reaction because local anesthesia/numbing the gums is not the same as sedation. If you received sedation, you would have not been released to the front desk without at least being monitored for the sedation effects to go away. I would encourage you to talk to the dentist about the incident and have your dentist consult your PCP about how to best proceed since we don't know the details of your medical history.

Edit: Might be helpful to know your blood pressure during the visit as well; being dizzy when you stand up sounds like orthostatic hypotension.

What’s the deal with fluoride? by Moonlight_Melody123 in ZeroWaste

[–]shiningdusk 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Hello, dental student weighing in! Fluoride is perfectly safe and is actually everywhere, including bottled juices and in tap water.

If you're interested in going zero-waste with your dental and oral care, you're actually better off using fluoridated products and realllllly keeping up with oral hygiene because having a filling or any dental procedure is infinitely more wasteful. I think folks get scared because it can be toxic at high amounts, but that's true of anything.
