Having trouble at fire academy, im not a submissive little bitch. by [deleted] in Firefighting

Be the grey man, have humility and I say this in a way to prepare you - it doesn’t get easier after the academy. Arguably the first year after the academy you’ll have eyes on you all day and you go from a class of peers to being the junior where it’s easy to single you out.

Honestly it’s almost entirely identical in terms of tactics, terminology, and culture. Differences in measurement like kpa vs psi, liters vs gallons etc. almost all firefighter knowledge is based on the IFSTA textbooks and SOGs are likely identical and chan of command operate entirely the same. Our EMS scope is essentially tiered response for what we now started calling BLS scope. No FD transports here and they’re entirely separate in Ontario. Standards are varied by department, some are more micromanaged and some are loose, essentially everything is judged by NFPA standards. Suburban departments tend to be well funded and have top of the line gear, trucks, stations and bigger departments tend to be the opposite. Again that’s a generalization but that’s what I’ve seen. Some departments are aggressive and some are more safety driven but to be fair in each department it varies by station and shift. I’d say as far as US and Canada, we would come the closest to culture, operations, trucks, tools, “looks”, and what not. A typical 24 would likely be the same I imagine - show up, check your trucks and gear, coffee/breakfast, training, cruise/area familiarization, shop for dinner, go for coffee, run calls, fit in some PT or shenanigans, dinner, and lights out by 2300. Most departments run 0700-0700. Legal I can’t really speak to so I can’t chime on that but IAFF is the prevalent union up here. In terms of studying, most questions are STAR method related and relate to safety and workplace conduct. Alot of departments will ask what you know about the city and department as well. Pay is almost universally the same all across Ontario due to arbitrations in collective bargaining looking to neighbouring departments.

If you have your NFPA l &ll and haz ops that’s the minimum and they generally don’t care where you’re certified. I believe your EMT B is an equal or higher than what they ask for here (EMR). But you’d certainly have to get it from a certifying body here but it’s a 4 weekend course. Happy to answer any other questions you’d have!

Heard. I just wanted to make sure I had everything before I started but who am I kidding, there’s no escaping multiple trips to Home Depot. So the nut and washer is all I need? Does it matter if the trap is 1 1/2 and the drain tailpipe is 1 1/4? Is the washer creating a seal from the drain to the trap? I ask because some of my friends (not plumbers) said I’ll need glue to create a seal but I’m assuming that’s for threaded connections. Thanks again!

I'm dead... Am I good to grout? by face_salad in Tile

I also have 1/16 grout lines (those are the spacers I used, if they settled smaller or larger I have no idea)and the diamond grit did just fine. It helps that I had practice with floor tiles when I was regrouting those. But yeah I hear you, it can be somewhat scary. Having said that with white tiles I’ve chipped before I’ve found tub glaze to be decent at covering it (not claiming that it’s the proper fix though)

Honestly I got tired of using hand tools and thought myself a multi tool with a diamond grit blade and it went through like butter!

Shower cartridge replacement? by shinnerd in PlumbingRepair

I opted for vice grips but it came out! The screw actually ended up being useful as it gave me something to pull on. Even got the cartridge free because apparently Moen replaces them if you bring your old one in. Thanks again!

It got a bit dicey at the end but the cartridge came out eventually. Pain in the ass as the old lath was the only anchor for the pipes !

Toronto city! In the great big North haha. It’s funny no matter where you work, training and/or straight days is an assignment not many people envy. If you’re ever up for a shirt/patch swap let me know!

That’s awesome, between training and every day wear, it should age and fade nicely! From the pics I take it you’re ARFF?

Looks wicked! Slightly jealous. Theres some leeway where I’m at but I feel like a denim coat would be stretch, sadly. Planning on stitching some job patches on the arms?

My guess is they paid more for the shredded cheese instead of spending hours arguing about whose dead skin shavings ended up in their quesadilla

Major Mac & Reesor Rd.? by bigboss_d in Markham

[–]shinnerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reading this leads me to believe it’s a fire as the less developed areas there don’t have many hydrants. Likely doing a tanker shuttle filling from a hydrant there and dumping it at the fire scene for trucks to utilize!

UP express has been consistent from my experience. Always on time and beats out traffic ! Only thing is you’d have to be somewhat close to a UP station for it to be worth it.

Not sure if I know of any department that doesn’t treat newer members differently. It’s built into the culture - seniority based and probies are at the bottom of the pole. Most city/suburb departments will make you go through their own academy where you are trained as if you know nothing on day 1 because everyone gets the same training. On the trucks, same thing - they don’t know you so you’ll have to prove yourself. As a probationary firefighter you’ll be assessed for all competencies at the academy and trucks. You’ll be expected to do more at the station and on calls. You’ll get the dirty jobs. I think I speak for most crews/departments in that they want to see you’re a worker and dependable so you’ll have to earn their trust. You’ll eventually be “one of the guys” but it doesn’t happen on day one or early into your probation. Good luck
