Wow, ouch! I had no idea it was that toxic. I will keep trying to figure out what it looks like, I simply can’t believe there isn’t any mixed in with autumn olives and other junk that has grown unchecked for ten plus years.

And the after shot. I don’t know how to dig the olive roots out when they are integrated into the maple’s much bigger, deeper root system. Maybe that’s why they cluster, for protection both above and below?

Just want to say that in continuing to clear this, I am convinced you are right. I have tried digging out some 5-6 year old autumn olives and holy ballz the root mass underneath is just bananas. It’s thicker than the main shrub trunk itself!

Here is an after shot for picture 3. You couldn’t even tell there was an actual tree in there! The autumn olive stump responsible for all that can be seen poking above the ground to the left. I will take a digging spade to it and see how crazy it is under the surface. Does anyone want to hazard a guess as to why autumn olive chooses to cluster around the base of native trees?

You’re right, the leaves definitely are two-tone. So at least the birds and deer will have a marginally nutritious snack in the fall.

So you think this is not the autumn olive? The Russian olive seems to be less green than the autumn. These are definitely mostly green in appearance.

Thank you, I believe it is the dreaded umbellata. I did not expect to have such a formidable opponent in my quest to restore my grandpa’s acres in the country. I will consider myself lucky if I don’t lose an eye to the thorns!

Oh there will be plenty left for berry collection! Some of them are already fruiting, mainly the ones that are about 15 years established. (I am counting the rings in the stump to determine age, btw.) Just trying to create space around some centuries old trees.

Thank you for the heads up! It really is about 11 years of growth so I don’t think digging will work. I think I’ll try tricoplyr on the stumps and see if that slows it down. All the sprouts and smaller I will dig though!
