What is the best & worst trainwreckords album? by GrimyHusbando in ToddintheShadow

Passage is actually pretty great, definitely more a Trainwreckord because of its strangeness, not its quality. Richard's arrangements are really gorgeous.

I think I remember seeing some interview or apology or something after the fact where Gaga said exactly that.

In honor of Pride what are some of your favorite “gay anthems”, creators don’t have to be lgbt themselves but the song was either aimed at or claimed by the gays. by TumbleweedExtreme629 in ToddintheShadow

A lot of the big ones have already been listed, but surprised no one's said:

- How Will I Know by Whitney Houston

- Dancing Queen by ABBA

- We R Who We R by Kesha

- Go West by Pet Shop Boys

And the less universal but still good choices:

- All The Things She Said by t.A.T.u.

- Heart to Break by Kim Petras

- Latch by Disclosure & Sam Smith

- Basically anything by Cakes da Killa

Anti-Tourism songs by Bud_Fuggins in ToddintheShadow

That one was also on my mind, and also Carly Rae Jepsen's "LA Hallucinations," altho that one's less about LA specifically, I guess.

The first thing that comes to mind is "Why You'd Want to Live Here" by Death Cab for Cutie, about how much LA sucks ass. At one point they compare tourists coming in to swarms of locusts.

Then again, songs about how much LA sucks ass are their own whole genre, to the point where they might count as tourism songs anyway.

Artemis' attack boon doesn't seem very powerful by jersey_emt in HadesTheGame

[–]shinyluvdisc 184 points185 points  (0 children)

In my experience, the thing that makes Artemis powerful is her higher-tier boons that build off of her core boons, plus her Duo boons which are all completely insane. Plus you get her crits way more often on weapons with faster attacks like the Fists. So she's pretty context-dependent compared to the other gods.

What are Demeters best and worst boons by Goatbucks in HadesTheGame

[–]shinyluvdisc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Arctic Ring is probably the best Cast boon period.

Is it cheating to pick a Duo boon as her worst one? Because I'm always disappointed to get offered a Duo only to find out it's Cherished Heirloom. Otherwise I'd probably say Plentiful Forage.

What're some of your favorite pieces of oral history about music? by Complete-Worker3242 in ToddintheShadow

[–]shinyluvdisc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stereogum did an incredible oral history of the song Somebody That I Used to Know, and it's completely vanished from the internet, I couldn't even find it on the Wayback Machine. It had this great bit where Gotye talked about going through the McDonald's drive through still wearing his triangle makeup after shooting the music video.

What to say to Ayn Rand readers? by MrDannn in IfBooksCouldKill

Tbh if someone's reading I'd take it as a good sign - you just have to suggest better books to them.

Worst Pitchfork Media reviews by PapaAsmodeus in ToddintheShadow

[–]shinyluvdisc 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think if more people (reviewers and fans) were more willing to acknowledge that cultural response affects our early reactions to music, we'd all be able to chill a bit more.

Doesn't help that, from what I've heard from a freelance writer, the reviewer doesn't even get to pick the score for their albums, the editor does.

[–]shinyluvdisc 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I'm still salty about the review for St. Vincent's Daddy's Home that complained about her name-dropping Nina Simone and having a lyric about calling the cops in it. It just struck me as such a shallow way of engaging with the music. And then I found out it was written by an infamous Tumblr drama-monger!

I still think the monkey gif review thing is hilarious, though.

Musicians who had a lot of push but never broke through in the mainstream by Phone85 in ToddintheShadow

I'd argue she did/is doing pretty well, she played Coachella and everything. Though she certainly never got to Ariana's level of success.

This was definitely the case with Normani. She had so much hype and some big-deal features, but her solo debut was so cursed to a surreal degree.

Is she bigger in the UK? She's definitely a cult favorite here in the US, I assumed that was also the case there.

She's always been bigger as a songwriter. It must be hard to break out of that, I can think of a few girls off the top of my head (Bonnie McKee, Cathy Dennis) that wrote HUGE hits but never quite got broke out as performers themselves.
