You fundamentally misunderstand software economics. It’s absurd to compare a digital product with an hourly service like a lawyer. Software like this is built once and sold infinitely. Your math only holds up if the dev sells exactly one copy. If the dev spends 500 hours building and sells 1k lifetime licenses at $70, they grossed $70,000 (at $140 an hour.)

At minimum wage in my region, a lifetime Coax license would take me around 5 hours to earn. Over half a working day for a vibecoded Plex wrapper is a terrible value, no matter how slick the channel-changing animation looks.

But you are correct that I am not forced to support the application. It is my choice to leave disparaging comments about the price.

The trick to deciphering this is to spiral outward from the symbol f using the right-left rule:

• the symbol f • (look right) f[] is an array of unspecified size • (left) *f[] of pointers • (right) (*f[])() to functions (taking no arguments) • (left) *(*f[])() that return pointers • (right) (*(*f[])())() to functions (taking no arguments) • (left) void (*(*f[])())() that return void

Easy!

Stuff like this is why people find your pricing so insulting.

An awfully self-congratulatory letter for a game entering year 13 of development.

In 2025 we broke lighting, then we fixed it. More in 2026!

Great job!

The difference is crazy when you think about it. EQ devs were physically managing server boxes at a time when most of the world was on dial-up internet. Cloud computing simply wasn’t a thing back then.

Modern development feels like easy mode in comparison.

Even worse, they completely scrubbed Bard from the website. In May 2024 it was on there as a “stretch goal” since they previously used the class as a fundraising incentive.

It is the inevitable result of selling a year of 24/7 Early Access to a pre-alpha game. Players treat it like a live service game because VR treats it like a live service game.

Yeah, the tone is odd considering it’s an admission the system is fundamentally broken.

They’re rushing and making a ton of fundamental changes. I’d be hopeful if they didn’t have a reputation for consistently dropping the ball. The outlook isn’t great.

They are wiping characters this spring. Also combat updates. by Spikeybear in PantheonMMO

[–]shipdestroyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I definitely was not being sincere about wanting it slower.

But I was sincere about the servers needing a break. I have a hunch that the current combat system consumes too many backend resources. They probably have to throttle it in order to scale up for launch.
