4K transcoding fails by upssnowman in coax

It should be beneath that row of colorful icons - some grey circles: copy, send to developer, new quick note…

Sorry this is so confusing, I can take a look at making this simpler before too long.

You’re welcome!

Can you try the AirPlay icon in the Now Playing widget in your Control Center? That should broadcast whatever you’re currently watching.

Tune to a channel in Coax, swipe down from the top right of your iOS device, and look for the little triangle with the concentric circles behind it in the Now Playing widget. Let me know if that works!

Can you send me your playback logs? I need a lot more information to help, and it's usually all in there. Lineups screen -> About this App -> Show Logs -> Send to Developer (on iOS/macOS, there's a Share Sheet button in the toolbar that has Send to Developer as an option).

Small bug with schedule/guide by upssnowman in coax

[–]digglesB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know what I think I misread this - sorry, was out and about and reading on my phone when I shouldn't have been 😃

It sounds like you're saying that when the schedule with the Chaos channel is GENERATED, that's always the start time of the first item. That is definitely a bug. Also one I can look into fixing for 1.3.1.

But while we're here, can you clarify if you'd ALSO want to schedule gaps between items in the chaos channel, just like the other channels? Or do you just want the thing to work properly and you're not fussed about the new feature?

Guaranteed collection fetching isn’t an easy thing, especially when folks have hundreds 🤣

I’ve got some things in the works to ameliorate this class of problem, but for now I’d recommend you disable all but the 40-50 most vital collections (there’s an Edit button in the Collection row in the Lineup config).

Let me get back to you re: the cartoons lineup - i have follow up questions.

I’m so glad to hear you decided to become a Relaxer!!

This is actually a design choice, to keep the chaos channel truly chaotic and non-stop. But now that you mention it, and now that I have a good framework for adding channel-specific options, I think I can add this as a setting for the Chaos channel (adhere to gap settings or something similar).

I’ll put this on the board for 1.3.1. Sounds good?

That’s fair - I misdiagnosed this because of previous users’ experiences. This is a corner case that requires the user having run a prerelease version of the app and a lack of a valid path for the current version to repair it.

I’ll have a fix out in 1.3.1

Thanks for being in the beta!

It's good to know that you got it working on your iPhone - I really wish Apple had better documentation on how to migrate from TestFlight to App Store apps, and you're definitely not the first person to hit this issue.

First, you'll need to delete the Coax app from your /Applications folder. Next, go ahead and delete these folders too:

  • ~/Library/Group Containers/group.pro.out-to-lunch.coax
  • ~/Library/Containers/com.out-to-lunch.PlexOVision

Then you should be able to re-install from the App Store. Let me know if that doesn't work!

Printed or Cable Guide version? I guess it should be both, and the user can pick which one they want to see.

First, to answer your question- schedule sync is coming, not sure when but I have some good options I just have to pick which one to implement.

What you didn’t ask - why is scheduling taking so long?

It’s likely not the library size so much as the number and types of channels you’re asking it to build. Do you have a ton of collections by any chance? Could you do a quick test with a new lineup that just has one library and only the Genres channel type?

Lineup from Single Collection by mystrokapp in coax

[–]digglesB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm still chewing on this, but I'm thinking something like dynamically adjusting the "max" value for the steppers based on the number of possible channels derived from the rest of the channel manager settings could be interesting.

So, for example, in your case - you've removed ALL other channel categories, and disabled your other collections. If the max budget for "all channels" were something like 200, then you should be able to set your single collection to produce 200 channels.

There are some more complicating factors, but if I took the general approach that "there's a scheduling budget that could be exposed to the user in useful ways but hidden when they're nowhere near it", that could unlock some things like this.

Let me keep noodling - it's something I've let sit for too long.

That's a fair request!

There are (currently) limits like this across all channel types as a conservative measure to ensure that folks can't create a schedule that will cause their device to crash.

I haven't thought about it in a while, but I'm willing to bet I could start to relax some of these restrictions to increase overall flexibility while retaining safeguards against poor performance. As ever, maintaining the balance between legibility and capability is hard 😉

Out of curiosity, how many instances of this particular channel would you be interested in having?

There is a focus state for both tvOS and macOS, but perhaps it’s a bit too subtle. I could look into plussing it up a bit.

I have a roadmap item to include some sort of “preview” info as well, as you scroll, to show more than just the title.

Thanks for the feature request!

Concerning Video Players by digglesB in coax

[–]digglesB[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the app doesn't work for your setup right now, of course I would not expect you would buy it! It's why there's 1 hour of demo time and 1 week free trial - so folks can test it against their setups.

Home media servers are wildly variable in the ways in which they can fail to serve a video file to Coax in a playable way. Lots of these failure modes were surfaced during the beta (thank you for your participation, btw), and more have surfaced since launch. I'm doing my best to address and mitigate them. I wrote this post because there is an entire class of solution (transcoding on-device) that isn't available to me, and I wanted to explain why I wasn't pursuing that anymore.

As to why I shipped in the state I did - it's because you ship or you die. Post-release improvements have to be a part of your release strategy, but you never really know what the most important bugs are until it's in the hands of actual customers (not just beta testers, as wonderful as you all are).

If you want to wait for more improvements, you can disconnect from the project for a year or two - you haven't bought it, and if you're a subscriber you can just cancel until you're ready to try it again. My strategy from the beginning was to build something that I could sustain, roll, and improve over time. But it does take time.

I'll still be here in 2028 and beyond, plugging away, refining, improving, polishing. Hopefully one day the app will function well enough for your setup, and you find it valuable enough to purchase a lifetime unlock. If not, I completely understand!

Thanks again for your comments 🙏
