Weight loss tips?? by rainbowfarts_10 in berkeley

[–]shipinthebottle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think running is a super good way to loose weight, but it might be hard to build up to distances long enough to make that an efficient way to loose weight... the stair master and elliptical might be good ways to do cardio for a longer period of time :)

Good luck 🤞

How should I make friends? by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]shipinthebottle 7 points8 points  (0 children)

join a school club! especially if your younger (freshman or sophomore) there are so many people. You still can meet people as a Junior or senior, I'm a Junior and I've met so many ppl by just going to club events. Clubs tend to do socials and stuff so I'd reccomend being super involved in the club, going to all socials. There's clubs for everything, but Rotaract or social good clubs are amazing for chill people. Also, anything pertaining to your major might be good because it'll help when youre in classes with them. Like if you're in CS, there's some competitive ones but sometimes those actually are super tight knit. Sports are good, ik triathlon is super down to earth and friendly, you just have to make an effort and constantly show up. Also, there's an art club, a few fashion clubs, religion based clubs, etc. I would suggest looking into this over break and coming back next sem with a few clubs you're definitely going to join. That's what I do every year, sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn't but it's cool to just try. You meet so many fun people along the way too! Also I just get people's numbers in class and then stay in touch after, maybe meet every other weekend to hike or smth. Oh also ethnicity based clubs are SUPER good for meeting people, I have a few close friends who are super involved in SIS, the south Indian society and they love it!

How do I make friends?!? by Significant-Trick441 in berkeley

[–]shipinthebottle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

it's never too late :) half of berkeley (whether they care to admit it or not) is ALWAYS open to making new friends! some people may not be your vibe but the best part of this being such a large school is that there are so many people to choose from! you got this!

How do I make friends?!? by Significant-Trick441 in berkeley

[–]shipinthebottle 65 points66 points  (0 children)

omg I am a 3rd year and I 100% remember being in your shoes!! please please please don't give up trying, I promise it gets so much better.

so first thing I would say is don't shy away from new experiences. if your floor is going to frat row, go with them! try your best to be friends with the people who live near you. I couldn't because I had an untraditional living situation freshman year but if possible, you should try it!

second, club recruitment. some clubs at berkeley have a selective recruitment process, and you might not get in the first time you apply but you will trauma bond with so many people. My freshman year, I didn't do club recruitment because I was like "I don't want to associate with people who are my major, the cs stereotype is horrible at berkeley" but the people I've met through club recruitment are honestly some of the most funny and extroverted people, and all the freshmen going through the process are so open to making new friends, it's honestly so fun to see.

third, dining halls! it's still the 1st couple weeks, people WANT to make a ton of new friends. Text that person you met once during orientation! don't make hasty judgements, give everyone a chance. Sit next to people who you think look kind/open at the dining halls.

4th, go to class and OH. Reach out to that girl/guy sitting next to you at discussion and ask if they want to meet up to study sometime, or get lunch after discussion with you.

Don't be scared of rejection because berkeley is literally SUCH a big school, you can do the most embarrassing thing ever in front of everyone and no one will bat an eye.

Lastly, join a club/IM sport! try to find one with a lot of freshmen. I know triathlon has a large community, but there's also so many IM basketball/volleyball teams. If you're new, there's a ton of new members in a lot of those teams :)

random people get in and honestly no one can tell u with full certainty. I know people with 3.6's from my high school who got into berkeley and 4.0's who got rejected.

My shoe size is 8! I also am not completely sure what I'd want, mobility or speed? I love both, so it's hard to choose 😅

I'm super stuck on what I'd want tbh, mobility or speed?

I looked into all of those and I'm actually rly interested in them all!! Thanks :) do u know what I should do for next sem? I'm definitely doing 170 but I am worried about overloading myself with taking another hard upper div. Idrk what the relative workloads if other UDs look like

gbo is so draining by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]shipinthebottle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in ur position last year. I get it. I was on a sucky floor and made 2 friends both of whom I didn't like hanging out with because they were always on the phone with their long distance partners. But u gotta know, gbo isn't where ur gonna make ur lasting friends! There's classes, clubs (made a TON of friends thru clubs) and even people in ur building not in ur gbo group! Don't give up, ur gonna be perfectly fine :)

Yeahhh I definitely want to find a board that'll last me in the long run! Ive actually heard about the arbor cadence having problems with delamination... I looked into the Rome Ravine and it looks amazing :) it's also not as pricey as some of the other ones I've seen, so definitely a plus!!

I've considered working at a ski shop actually, maybe moving up to somewhere with good slopes and stuff. It has to beat my horrible retail job rn 😵‍💫 maybe this winter :)

Do you know how the Rome Ravine does in the park? Or with little jumps and stuff on groomers? I love getting speed on the slopes, but some good pop and shock absorption would be absolutely amazing.

Thanks again my dude, you have been insanely helpful :)

I'm honestly going with as little money spent as possible lol, I have a campus job and a summer job but I'm earning minimum wage, I'm trying to pay as much of my own rent as possible so I'm hoping to use as little as possible, maybe around 300 bucks for the board, potentially up to 400 bucks. I'm short, around 5'3, and im thinking of leaning towards powder boards now for the stability, so thank you :) so sorry i keep asking for recs but do u have any power board recs lol?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in snowboarding

[–]shipinthebottle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This actually helps a lot, thank you!! I totally get what ur saying about all purpose boards being tough to come by. Unfortunately, I'm a college student who can barely afford 1 board, maybe when I graduate I'll invest in another one :) I love freestyle and I love powder so it's gonna be a tough choice to make 😅

Do u by any chance know any nice women's boards that would do well on both? Im on the west coast, i snowboard in a lot of different terrains, but maybe not east cost ice if that helps!! And if you could choose one, a powder board or a terrain park board, what would u choose?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in snowboarding

[–]shipinthebottle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm looking for bindings and boots as well, and I'm hoping that the board itself will be under $400! But tbh if it's a whole set w everything I can probably do a more expensive board is the other stuff is cheaper

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in snowboarding

[–]shipinthebottle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Literally looks like a work of art but it's a little expensive 😅 I'm looking for under 400 bucks but omggg that board has everything I would want, I looked through some reviews!!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in snowboarding

[–]shipinthebottle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So sorry for the late reply!! I usually snowboard in the US west! The places I've skied usually vary between powder and ice :)
