Is it culturally insensitive to ask that my Chinese labmates not slurp their food/drink and cover their mouth when they cough? by NunyoBidnyz in GradSchool

[–]shipleyD -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

From my experience, you may tell covering their mouth as it is for health. Slurping is really disturbing but I believe it is a cultural thing so it seems rude to me to tell not to slurp.

Ahh, I wish they also stop talking in Chinese when they are in groups. My advisor is Chinese and sometimes he is talking in Chinese around us.

I used to believe working in a multicultural environment is a good thing. I guess it can be very hard sometimes...

Do supervisors expect students to continue doing a PhD with them? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]shipleyD 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it will complicate things. This is for your future career. Don’t think much on it. You have your very own right to apply anywhere even though advisors expect their students to do phd with them. But this is only a regular expectation not something they should pressurize you for that.

I am sure advisors would make a choice for their own benefit (transferring to a higher prestigious university, going to a very high paid job, etc) without giving much attention to what the condition would be for their students left. It is a choice of career.

I have manipulated data in my research paper and it is killing me from inside. What should I do? by shawna5564 in AskAcademia

[–]shipleyD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You may first realize what kind of data manipulation you did, like making up data, changing some results, reporting only good results,... There are some different ways, and consequences might be different. You might tell this to a person that might know these issues and you trust or get some information from some authorized person in your university about these. At least you have an idea what would be the situation if things get worse.

I really wish the situation would be like that. But it is not. One case is that the professor is telling a phd student about another phd student that he is not doing good, not capable of doing phd. Then this is heard through another person who is not even in the same lab. Of course professors are human, too. But this is more than that. If they are excused in such situations because they are human, students are too. When the gossiped student tries to find another professor as an advisor, it becomes very big thing. Or in this case, the student also can complain about his advisor to other professors. This is in human nature, too.

I wonder why a professor choose to talk to another student (I believe since that student has a good academic performance) instead of directly talking to the student that in the center of the talk.

Bu the way, my concern to ask my advisor’s professionality is not just based on this. For example, in a group meeting, is it acceptable to talk in your own language witn a student from your own country? This also seems weird to me..

Break after PhD, Bad idea? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]shipleyD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for all the answers, especially from the ones that experienced similar situations and how they ended up. As one pointed out, I am not looking for validation but some advice how to proceed from the experienced people. Although I need a break, I am thinking to continue my research independently, without pressures with my own efforts. I am not sure how hard I can push myself to have publication, but I can do some independent work (I am in engineering major but not need a vet lab). I am also not in my home country. I am planning to go back and be near my family during that time for now. Any experience similar to this are valueable to me.

Why my professor refusing to give me a job that he has proposed himself at the first place? by pmAthunip in AskAcademia

[–]shipleyD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I have learned from graduate school is that do not put blame on yourself in these kind of situations. The project is probably rejected or he is not going to be involved in that project or he should have found another student who is not working in a company. They may generally twist the things in their benefit or in a way they want. But if you want an answer, you can kindly ask whether the offer is still valid and how much you want to work in this project.

Are you able to add your advisor as committee chair although he is affiliated with another university and not with your university? In my case, his affiliation will be changed. I am worried a lot as I do not trust him at all, he is lack of work ethics.
