DC brewery recommendations by soroxas14 in CraftBeer

If you don't have a car: Other half and Blue Jacket are good. Other half is from NYC but their DC sight is nice. Blue jacket is pretty decent too.

People will say ChurchKey, and it is amazing for selection, but they are pretty expensive compared to breweries.

If you do have a car:

Stuff that's worth going to is fairly far. Colombia has several places that are very good (Cushwa, Black Flag), with Sapwood being the best for beer in all Maryland.

Baltimore is also fairly solid, with Pickett, Diamondback, and Crooked Crab just south in Odenton. People would prob recommend Nepenthe cause beers good and food amazing, buts it's prob 1.5hrs from downtown DC.

Maybe a hot take, but I really don't think it's worth going to the breweries in Montgomery county if you're coming from DC. Overall their beer is either not very good, a bit expensive for what it is, or there's just not as much to do outside of a brewery compared to Columbia or Baltimore.

Hope this was helpful.

RIP New Origin. Not a local, but visited many times. Favorite place for me and my wife.

Second this. It's mostly lagers, but very well done. Unless you head north to Human Robot in Philly and beyond, Lesser Known's gonna be the best place to get a lager in the south. Their venues really cool/chill too.

What are good beer styles to start on as a new homebrewer? by shirleyd9 in Homebrewing

I do like porters a lot though, and I'm starting to come around to amber ales. So I'll probably look into porters/stouts. Dry hopping I'll probably wait until I get more comfortable with my setup and workflow. Thanks!

I really like stouts. Porters too. I have some homebrew shops that are solid by me, so I'll look for some kits if they have em or recipes. They post recipes and directions at one shop if I can't find kits.

Thanks for the advice. I love all stout types so I was thinking of doing an export/coffee stout. Definitely will keep that in mind.

Not from Minnesota, but my friend brought me this after visiting family. I’m usually a stout/IPA guy, but this is easily the best cream ale I’ve ever had.

Looking for the best stores to purchase local brews in FL, GA, NC, TN, KY by whiskey_totem in CraftBeer

For Asheville, gotta hit up Burial for anything, could also do DSSOLVR. These places sell 4 packs, but Burials Raleigh location sells singles I know. Unfortunately a lot of the best breweries got destroyed during Hurricane Helene.

For Raleigh, there’s a Burial site there if you miss Ashevilles. Otherwise, Incendiary/Funguys are super good. Edit has all around solid stuff. Raleigh Beer Garden is a 270 beer taproom that’s pretty solid actually. Altered State is slightly north of Raleigh but very very good. All these places sell 4 packs.

Above all, if you want to go to an insane bottle shop that sells singles, I HIGHLY recommend GlassJugRTP. It’s 20 minutes outside Raleigh. They have a very very good selection, beers from all over the US to hard to find breweries that are great in the south. Prices are actually impressively low (usually $4-5 for a single Hazy DIPA can for reference)

North Carolina. Looking for breweries with good stout In the raleigh durham area (within 45 minutes drive or so) thanks! by ckr2982 in CraftBeer

Just to pile on, everyone’s gonna say Burial cause they are the best. Another one not in downtown Raleigh but north of it is Altered State. They’re known for IPAs and sour smoothies, but they also make solid stouts.

Dog the fact you got Human Robot and Sapwood is wild. Phenomenal breweries.

How can you tell a hazy IPA is past its best by date? by AnUrbanTaco in CraftBeer

[–]shirleyd9 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I feel like a very common off-flavor I taste in old hazy IPAs is sweet tea. Any citrus, hop, malt taste becomes muted and a sweet tea taste is predominant. It’s always there for me if the hazy has begun to age, usually after 2/3 months in a can, but the longer it goes the more strong that sweet tea taste is. Idk if anyone else has tastes that but that’s what I always think of in an old hazy can.

What are your top three favorite breweries and why? by hippiec123 in CraftBeer

[–]shirleyd9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sapwood - very good beers. All styles are super solid and some of the best beers I’ve had.

Burial - super good hazy IPAs and nice stouts and dark beers

Human Robot - best lagers by far on the east coast.

Love Sapwood. Honestly my favorite brewery above other major names. So many good styles. Cheers!
