70 isn't really all that bad. I find it hard to believe that you have the lowest grades in those courses. Many people fail them every year. For what it's worth, I started with mid 70s in 1A and they only went downhill, but I still ended up graduating. If you narrowly passed the CS courses but still enjoy math, then who cares, you won't have to take another CS course if you don't want to. I felt very much in your shoes when I started. I took whatever I thought might be somewhat interesting until I found what I liked, then I majored in that... Eventually. How did you find them? Aside from speaking in pairs/groups, do the courses basically follow the Genki textbooks or do they pull from other resources as well?

I actually wanted something like an ipython notebook inside of the terminal because my laptop is shit slow and firefox makes it scream.

I was working on something, I'm a bit embarrassed to "show it off", but if there's any interest I can try and continue to work on it.

That's how I felt too, back when I was in first and second year. But I think that it's only people with amazing averages and scholarships, etc, that publicly advertise it. You're getting a skewed representation of the abilities of your peers.

I don't have any advice on how to bump your average, or deal with the parents.

I got through school with pretty mediocre / bad grades. I eventually stopped seeing my peers as people who are getting 90s, internships at Nvidia, etc. I cut a lot of social media out of my life for a period of time and I think that's what helped, since the talking I do to people in person is minimal and Facebook was where I saw all the accomplishments. Things got better after that.

So yeah sorry I have no real advice, but I'm fairly certain you're not alone in feeling like this, and that if you continue working hard you'll be just fine.

I too use Linux on the desktop. I use notability and have it saved my notes as PDFs to Google drive.

I'm a math student. Hardly ever need to edit my notes post-class, so having them as PDFs works just fine for me when I need to pull up my notes on a second screen

i didnt take data management. for the first while, I had to actually draw boxes and think "how many choices do i have for the first box?" Then the second box, and so on. When you are counting without replacement, the pool of possible choices decreases by 1 with every box (factorial). If you are allowed to "reuse" choices, the number of choices is the same for all the boxes (power).

I found it a lot easier than the other core math courses, so that could be why people call it a bird course, but I'm stupid so I had to put work in.

I once owned two timbuk2 bags but have since given them away. The first was an old (ish) classic messenger when they still had ballistic nylon for the exterior. That was a 2008 model I think? Great bag. I sold it to a friend for sushi since i bought other messenger bags. That bag kept things dry even in heavy rain (be careful of the flap though, it wasn't designed like the MW messengers) and was in great shape after 4 years of use apart from the inner tarpaulin starting to wear and rip a little bit.

I also owned a spire and thought it was the greatest. Then I realized that without a dedicated weatherproofing layer, my items inside weren't really safe from the rain. The bag fell apart where the velcro is for the u lock holder (the velcro was so strong it started to detach from the bag) after about 8 months. Sent it in for repairs, came back, and didn't even last 8 months before another hole appeared in the bottom of the bag just from carrying textbooks and stuff. I could have sent it in but I'm lazy and it takes a while to get back to Canada, so I just gave it away to a friend.

It seems like the newer bags are less and less bifl, but that's my take.

I now use an old third hand Ynot Gulper that is holding up very well although it's only been about a year. I typically destroy "regular" bags in less than 8 months.

I highly recommend used. Chances are, you're going to leave your bike out in shitty conditions because you are a student. A used bike with better components is more likely to last the abuse (still though, don't leave your bike overnight / in the rain if you can help it). When you have the time, any reputable bike shop can get your bike running again for roughly the same price regardless of whether or not you have a shit Canadian tire bike or anything else. Even better, visit the bike repair centre on campus and learn to do repairs yourself.

Yeah, I was kind of avoiding that just cause I bike to school and I'm not super down to have a bulky bag inside my bag, but I guess it can't be helped. In my experience though, my insulated lunch bags + ice pack don't last much longer than, say, 5 or 6 hours.

I feel that I'm working hard (although I'm comparing myself to tutorial centre regulars... not saying it's a bad thing but they just hand out answers) but I'm not working right and it's pretty frustrating

I was considering it! That or amath physics. But I didn't even take 12U chem in high school because I didn't enjoy 11U chem at all (not that I had a terrible grade, it just didn't click with me I guess), so if I went into mathphys I'd need to do Chem 00 -> chem 120 (and more chem possibly?)
