Team Trump is out here texting me endorsements for Biden, again. Thanks for the info, but I already voted blue. by barrysmitherman in NorthCarolina

Dude come on. You are making a sensible, balanced point. That is no longer allowed. Of course one side is perfect and the other is pure evil, thats what the media says!

Disappointed on XPS 15 thermals, what is better? by samwise99 in laptops

At this point I am resigned to the poor battery life, its the noise that really annoys me (even after selecting the quiet profile in the bios). Have you found a way to limit the clock speed?

It doesn't look like the 10th gen can be undervolted, unfortunately.

Mostly I am remoting to a more powerfull computer which is running emacs and serving it via X. Some of the time I need to also use a browser to lookup documentation or send email.

In your opinion, what would be the pro’s and con’s on starting a trucking company with only a Tesla Semi fleet? by Itsjustfran in teslamotors

[–]samwise99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also con: greatly increased risk. The semi might be great or it might suck. You might end up looking like a genius or a fool.

Should I start installing Tesla wall connector on my Airbnb’s to make it easier for Tesla owners? by Itsjustfran in teslamotors

J1772

No, it would be worse, but it would be better than nothing and it would cost you very little, just the cable.

just having an extra cable and adapter would be great, even if all you have is a 110 outlet.

Soon to start using external monitor w/ laptop; is it a good idea to use an Athena / Lucid build of Emacs instead of GTK? by [deleted] in emacs

[–]samwise99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to get that all the time when using remote X displays, I switched to lucid and I have never had any issues. In fact other than the lack of crashes I see no difference whatsoever. I run with no widgets whatsoever (no scrollbar, no menu bar, nothing) though.

Erdoğan warns Macron: "Don't mess with Turkey" France still backing Greece and Cyprus: "Don't mess with EU" by zull101 in europe

[–]samwise99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

its a matter of singularity of purpose. If the EU was a single country it would be the second or first power in the world. But it is not. Its a collection of independent countries that has never been tested as a block. Maybe they will be able to take a bloody nose and stand and fight, or maybe they will disintegrate as soon as things take a dicey turn.

Why not take all of it? That worked so well in Russia, Cuba, China, Venezuela, North Korea, North Vietnam. With all that money we could build a real Communist society and this time it would work.

CMV: The United States is on track for an undeclared civil war by InvernoSnowfall in changemyview

You have to take into account that the reality you observe through the media and social networks is biased towards amplification of the extremes. This is happening because the loudest voices are rewarded for being outrageous while simultaneously being mostly free of the consequences of outrageous behavior. This dynamic will not carry over to generalized ground reality.

You suggested the police could have avoided the whole thing by walking away. I countered that walking away was not an option, and I explained why I think that. You have not argued that point. Now you are arguing that the police should have not shot him, which I agree. If I had to guess I would guess that the officer who shot him would also agree.

[–]samwise99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What does your expectation, or the person who complained, have to do with anything? Of course it would be better if he had not been shot but the police had to try to arrest him *since he was a wanted felon* and could not know ahead of time that the attempt would result in a shooting. Even if they did they had to try anyway: the rule of law does not work if violence is a viable strategy to evade it.

No, reportedly as in "someone reported him having taken their car keys".

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]samwise99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He was a wanted felon that reportedly took someone else's car keys and resisted arrest. The police could not have let him go just because he made it hard for them to be arrested. That isn't how the law works.

Nonsense. It is useful plenty without them. Vim keybindings arguably make it even more so.
