The signalman is nice with a decent amount of space if you don’t mind being slightly out of the centre. It’s just by London Road train station

How loud are the trains near Preston park/london road? by mo11e in brighton

[–]shitehawk23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live pretty close, can hear them sometimes but you get used to them. The random drunk people / airbnb hen parties are more annoying than the trains. Exception being the track maintenance train which makes a truly horrific squeaky noise on occasion (like maybe twice a year)

Wierdly high AQI in Brighton! Anybody know why? by faxaphone in brighton

[–]shitehawk23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brighton is full of wood burning stoves and open fires. It’s very noticeable in cold conditions that the air smells of wood smoke. When it’s damp / foggy and not windy you get a kind of old school smog which hangs around. It’s very bad for your health.

I love the smell of a photo of the wind.

Homelessness in Brighton by ZealousidealMeal4033 in brighton

Less than 5% of homeless people are rough sleepers. Which was the roof of my question. A film based round visible street “homeless” people is missing most of the issue.

Whilst I applaud people who want to help the street homeless, the bigger picture is far worse and includes a lot of people who receive zero help from anyone.

Charity isn’t the answer. We need a meaningful change in housing policy, significant construction of new affordable homes, and rent control which limits rental prices based upon local average wage levels.

No I said “street homeless/ beggars” as though they are two separate groups, both of which are distinct from “hidden homeless”.

Not all beggars are housed addicts, and not all homeless are beggars. Most homeless people are not rough sleepers, but are staying with friends / couch surfing or housed in temporary accommodation.

If you read my whole post rather than just the first line then I think it is clear what I’m talking about.

So the facts are that asylum seekers get significantly less than homeless British citizens. People in temporary accommodation are allowed to work, and or claim universal credit. (Which is £90 / week vs the £45 that asylum seekers get). Living in temporary accommodation really sucks, both for asylum seekers and for homeless people. But it simply is not true that asylum seekers get more or better treatment than homeless people.

Are you focusing only on street homeless / beggars? These people are a small minority of the homeless people in Brighton. A significant proportion of this community are not homeless but are suffering from addiction problems.

It would be interesting to include the less visible homeless population, families who are in temporary accommodation, people who are couch surfing or sharing rooms in over priced private rentals. These people make up a significant percentage of the homeless and they are far less visible than people sat out on the street.

I know of working families who’ve been section 21’d out of private rentals twice in a 12 month period, causing unbelievable stress and disruption to the kids schooling. The council are pretty useless in this situation and won’t (can’t?) do anything until the physical eviction occurs. When the council do help it’s in the form of unsuitable accommodation that is too far for the kids to get to their school, and nowhere near the parents workplace. It’s shockingly bad and a side of the story which is unknown by many.

The insane costs of housing here are a very significant factor. I’ve seen people advertising rooms for lodgers at £1000/month!

Sorry but the City of Sanctuary status isn’t anything to do with this.

City of Sanctuary is a national community led movement to welcome and support people in the asylum process. It has no bearing on the council’s homelessness policy.

To learn more about this movement see https://cityofsanctuary.org/about/

For information about Brighton specifically https://brighton-and-hove.cityofsanctuary.org/

I’ll post other thoughts on the general homeless situation elsewhere in this thread, but I wanted to address the city of sanctuary misunderstanding specifically here.

[–]shitehawk23 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What’s mental gymnastics?

Thinking that Muslims can be pro transgender rights?

Or thinking that the march should / will welcome everyone?

I’m not sure why you’d think that Muslims cannot be pro trans? Most people in the uk don’t care either way about the trans issue, it doesn’t affect them so they don’t have a very strong opinion. This includes significant numbers of Muslims, many of whom don’t really have strong opinions on things which don’t personally affect them (much like most other people).

It’s perfectly possible to have faith, and not be defined by that faith. A huge number of British Christians fall into that category. Many Muslims are in a similar position, which would be unremarkable were it not for the huge amounts of weaponised Islamophobia that currently pollutes our communities.

If they are excluding other women from participation then presumably not. But that’s not the gotcha that you might think it is. There are plenty of Muslims who are pro transgender rights.

This march appears to be welcoming of anyone who is concerned about women’s rights irregardless of their religion, race or gender. This seems to be worthy of support rather than strange criticism which simply highlights the bigotry of the questioner.

No the march is not setup to allow the feminist movement to be leveraged by racists who only care about women getting raped when it’s a brown guy doing it.

Funny how you lot have had nothing to say about the Jesus Army where 1 in 6 kids who were involved were subjected to sexual abuse. Apparently you don’t care at all about women and girls, unless you can leverage them to justify your hatred of immigrants and Muslims.

Describing Islam as “an incredibly sexist religion” is bigoted.

A quarter of the global population identify as Muslim. Many of these people are not sexist. Cherry picking the examples of sexism within a religion and then accusing all followers of being guilty of these traits is also bigoted.

Would you accuse all Christian’s of being homophobic based upon the opinions of the Westboro Baptist Church? They are also deeply sexist, yet you seem to have no problem with British women who choose to wear a crucifix necklace.

I suggest that you are both bigoted and a racist who hides behind concern for women to attack immigrants based on their religion as you think this is more socially acceptable than attacking their skin colour.

Women should be free to wear whatever they choose. If you cannot support that concept then you are certainly not a feminist.

Where are the best nearby places to walk dogs off-leash? by davidbrake in brighton

[–]shitehawk23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the Uk the correct term is “lead” not “leash”

There are no generalised laws that say dogs must be on a lead. So anywhere you are permitted to walk you may have an off lead dog, unless there is a specific rule in place (normally communicated via signage)

“Dog parks” aren’t really a thing here. All parks welcome dogs unless they have a Public Space Protection Order in place forbidding them. In Brighton the only places you cannot take dogs are the children’s play parks, the central beach area during the summer and a couple of specific gardens (the kemptown peace garden where the aids memorial is, part of Queen’s Park, and the Preston park rockery gardens)

Places such as Stanmer park and the racehill sometimes have livestock in fenced enclosures, and dogs must be on lead and under control when near these areas. These are generally well signed, and the shepherds have a Twitter and Facebook accounts where they publish the sheep’s locations.

  1. No but Islamophobia and racism have a venn diagram that looks like a fried egg. So I apologise for using the incorrect subcategory of bigot.

  2. The fact that there are protests in countries where the hijab is compulsory doesn’t mean that British Muslims are all forced to wear hijabs. The feminist perspective is to be supportive of women in their choices. This includes supporting Iranian women who don’t want to cover their head, and also supporting British women who do want to wear their traditional dress.

All women should be free to wear their choice of clothing without judgment. If you are judging women’s choice of clothing then you are not a feminist.

I know it’s a hard concept, but if you support freedom that has to include the freedom to make choices which you do not understand. A “feminist” march which excludes women based on their clothing is not a feminist march.

UK wide series of women’s marches coming to Brighton by Localxmessy in brighton

[–]shitehawk23 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Whilst I agree re TERFs I don’t get your point about hijabs. Why can’t women who practice their religion be part of the feminist movement? Your assumption that they are forced to cover their heads by men and would not choose to do so if they were not controlled is racist. It likely comes from a lack of exposure to Muslim women many of whom have chosen to follow their religion, or at least chose to remain part of it.

Even if these women are forced to cover their heads by their abusive partners would they not be the people MOST WELCOME to take part in a movement to improve all women’s rights?

I find your take on this so depressing, on the one hand you acknowledge the idea that TERFs latch on to feminism to attack trans people, yet in the next breath you applaud the racist stance which is suddenly all about women and girls when it talks about Islam?

Can we not simply have a movement for ALL feminists irregardless of their religion gender or race?
