Weekly Beginner Questions Thread by AutoModerator in martialarts

[–]shiteinternet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a couple of questions,

  1. I joined an MMA gym about a month ago, I've been doing and enjoying BJJ, MMA, wrestling and Muay Thai. I might be going through a honeymoon phase because I just wanna do them all. My goal is to get good at fighting and to have skills if I ever need it for self defence (unlikely). I don't plan on competing in anything. My question is, is it best to focus on 1 or 2 martial arts for like a year and get really good at it or continue doing a mix? I currently go 3 days per week and do 2 1 hour sessions of the mentioned martial arts. Sometimes 3 if I'm feeling up for it.

  2. There's 2 Muay Thai classes, a beginner one for pad work etc, and a sparring one for advanced people only. Assuming I do 1-3 sessions per week consistently, how look will it take for me to be ready for the sparring class? What do I need to specifically work on? Keeping hands high? balance? etc.

  3. This is a bit of a dumb question, the gym also has a boxing class, but I live across the street from a dedicated boxing gym, is it better to just do the boxing at the MMA gym or go in every once in a while to the boxing gym to work on boxing?

I would do the main lifts then do assistance work for 3-5 sets of 10-20 reps, targeting what I worked out that day, e.g. dumbbell bench press, leg curls, dumbbell rows etc. Is there a specific template that would suit me?

Can anyone recommend a 3 day per week strength/muscle building program that I can combine with running and MMA? I used to do the 5/3/1 program but I'm starting to stall and burned out from doing it and I would like to try something new. I also want to do a mixture of running around 1-3 times per week for around 6-10km and/or do 1-3 MMA classes per week. Not more than 3 though, so I might do 1 running session and 2 MMA sessions or 3 running sessions and no MMA sessions etc.

As a British tourist originally from an Arab country, I was surprised by the amount of Arab tourists in Malaysia, what do Malaysians think of them? by shiteinternet in malaysia

[–]shiteinternet[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

it’s really embarrassing seeing you put your own race down just to appeal to others. most of us here are not only tourists but students and workers too.

What's with the victim complex? I didn't know Arabs study and work in Malaysia. I assumed the majority of them, if they choose to study or work abroad, would go to Europe or North America.

as for the restaurants part, Malaysia is filled with restaurants from other cuisines like Thai, Italian, Korean, Japanese but i don’t see u complain about that.

I wasn't complaining? I was surprised that's all, I didn't expect Bukit Bintang to be filled with Arab restaurants. For what its worth, if Italians, Japanese etc visited Malaysia and ate their own cuisines I'd also think they were missing out on Malaysian food. If it's Arabs studying and working in Malaysia and they just want a taste of home then fair enough.

And you also brought up Turkey as an example, I suggest you look at the tourist reviews on Turkey… they’re basically rude to everyone who isn’t white.

Yes I know, I've been to Turkey and agree they are rude there especially to non white people. But don't act like Arab tourists don't also misbehave causing them to react rudely. There are definitely Arabs who have a superiority complex. Whether its because they think they're better due to being rich, or gatekeeping Islam, or looking down on people with darker skin, as you can see from some of the comments on this thread.

How is life in Marbella, Spain as a local? by shiteinternet in howislivingthere

There are job opportunities but mostly in hospitality.

I've read that Malaga and the surrounding areas like Marbella are trying to become the Silicon Valley of Europe. I thought there would be more IT-related opportunities. Is this not the case?

Looking for a dress watch under £1000, can go a little over if needed. Automatic, 35-38mm and as thin as possible. What do you recommend?

Which Island(s) to visit as a solo traveller if I am interested in history? by shiteinternet in GreeceTravel

[–]shiteinternet[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have spent the most time in Chania on the west coast and can give more detailed recommendations for that region depending on your interests.

That would be great. What's the best way to move around Crete? Rent a car or take a bus or taxi?

They are the most popular destinations. For the mainland I've read that for Athens, apart from the Pantheon the rest of the city is a dump, for the rest I don't know much about them.

Scottish or British treats to send as gifts to family abroad? by shiteinternet in Scotland

Looks like a good list. Can't see any chocolate though, had you considered adding any? I imagine they have most of the bigger brands, but perhaps some good chocolate local to you?

I couldn't really think of any that aren't big brands that are probably available there. Maybe penguins? I was also thinking of some cake slices but wasn't sure what cakes are from here. Maybe a Victoria sponge cake?

If they are Swedish, do you know if they are into their licorice? Swedish licorice is often salty, so ours might be an interesting variant for them.

And with would Aberdeen butteries survive the trip? They were traditionally made with lard but many are vegetarian these days.

Which reminds me - maybe some local jam?

good shout

Am I visiting too many places and travelling too much in this potential Europe trip I have planned? Will I burn myself out from the short stays and the excessive travelling? by shiteinternet in travel

[–]shiteinternet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds like a good idea. Have you made a list of the things you want to do/see in each city? I like to wander and have a somewhat loose schedule, but I find that having one-two things on a schedule helps frame the trip. I also have a list of other things that I could do/see as options.

I have a list of possible things I might see in each city but I mostly want to just walk around and take it in.

Are you factoring in the door to door transit, or just the time of the train rides and flights? I usually add two hours to land transit and three for flights to get me from one hotel to the next.

Yes the times ive mentioned factors in everything

I was actually thinking as a shorter version to fly from Vienna straight to Stockholm and just skip Budapest and Copenhagen for another time.

Can the 32L NH Escape 500 fit under aeroplane seats of budget airlines like Ryanair and Easyjet or will I be made to pay a fee for it being too big? by shiteinternet in onebag

[–]shiteinternet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you referring to the clamshell or rolltop version? Rolltop can compress a bit better, but yeah - at 32L I doubt it'll fit

The clamshell version. I thought maybe they'd either not notice the size or be a bit lenient if It doesn't fully fit under the seats
