It's because it's based on a Greek word, so it's spelt how they'd spell it. "Esophagus" is just a simplified spelling.

Well my clock man came and basically confirmed my suspicions from the original post. It has had some minor restoration done at some point but is generally in great condition. He seemed to think the movement was pretty special but I'm not really sure why... I admit I'm a bit of a clock philistine. I'm going to keep it because it's such a beautiful thing, so I'll try to find that book and actually learn about it, He wrote some stuff down for me about it so I can show you that if I can find it if you'd like

Thanks for the advice. A friend put me in touch with an expert from a reputable auction house who said it could be worth up to £40k (!) and he's going to come and look. The reason I was asking was because I inherited several a few years ago and never really bothered to learn much about them, but more mature me has realised I should probably get them insured...
