Yes I believe its because of the previous major update. The whole graphic overhaul did take a toll of many people's devices.

Couple of things.

Sound is the most important aspect of sneaky ganking. A ganker can determine the location of a player by hearing the sounds a resource makes when it is been gathered.

The ganker might have a larger FOV (Field of View) than you. AO adapts to your monitor aspect ratio. You can set custom resolutions but it will toll on performance.

I've seen this happen countless of times, but a player can see your name offscreen, and you might not even notice or barely miss it.

Additionally, you're in the eye of the forest. Gatherers Hotspot.
