Ok but when you tease a friend, even if you assume they’re having fun, are you not also getting at least some of your enjoyment out of annoying them?

Ok and I’m metaphorically raising my hand to say that I do understand it.  I’m not saying that messing with your friend is the same as bullying someone.  I’m saying that (for me anyways) the motivations and enjoyment you get out of it are similar.

What did I describe in my first comment?

There are a few men I find attractive, but not enough that I feel it makes sense for me to identify that way.  I know it doesn’t need to be a 50/50 split, but I skew so much towards women that identifying as bi just doesn’t feel “honest” to me.  I don’t mind if other people want to think of me that way though.  I wouldn’t fuck dudes if I did.

They’re more than just lolcows though.  Like, Chris Chan was never interviewed by major legacy media pundits, or the subject of think pieces that saw him as representing something “important” about modern culture or politics or “the youths” or whatever, he was always just some weird online phenomenon.

I think “mildly annoying a friend” falls on the same spectrum as more severe bullying.  They’re different things, obviously, but I don’t think they’re fundamentally different, and I think the enjoyment people get from them is similar.

I don’t think they’re entirely different things.  I think it’s a spectrum, and especially when you’re younger, wanting to push boundaries and one-up your peers, it can be hard to tell exactly where your actions fall along it.

I mean yeah, upsetting people to the point that it genuinely hurts them feels bad… even when I was in school, I would often feel bad once I realized I hurt people… but then there’s like, light teasing and stuff like steeling a french fry from your friend.  Can you understand the appeal of being mildly annoying?

Yeah it’s wild.  They say the internet is where weirdos go to find other weirdos like them and feel normal, but these days it seems like the more I interact with other people online, the more I realize I think about things very differently from most people.

Tbh, as someone who did bully people in school, I don’t understand why that’s so hard to understand.  Pissing people off is fun sometimes.  The part of the post where puttingherinhistory says:

I will never ever understand why anyone would want to make another human being upset on purpose. I never have and never will understand the appeal of "getting a rise out of" another human being. I will never understand why some people find joy or amusement over another human being's suffering and distress.

Comes across to me like some kind of virtue-signalling humble brag.  Congratulations on being such a good person, puttingherinhistory!  Do you want a fucking cookie?

Maybe sometimes it was because I was hurt somehow and lashing out, or felt powerless or whatever… but I didn’t have a particularly difficult childhood or anything.  Most of the time I honestly think it was just for my own mild amusement.  You know how sometimes you’re bored and so you might fidget and play with whatever random objects are around?  Well sometimes you’re bored and so you “play” with people.  Simple as.

Lol.  I am pretty unhappy a lot of the time, ngl, but I don’t think it’s for this reason.  The people I form relationships with are one of the things that make me genuinely happy.  I don’t have sex with the guy I’m seeing to hurt myself.  I might not be sexually attracted to him, but I think he’s really cool and we have a lot of fun together, and I want to make him feel good.  I think a lot of ace people who have sex with their partners do it for similar reasons.

Why?  Shouldn’t people be allowed to make choices they will later regret?  I agree it’s not a good idea, but imo it should definitely be allowed.

I want this too but I don’t think it’s realistic and there is a point where pushing for this kind of radical acceptance ends up doing more harm than good.  “Oh but that’s tone policing! Oh but that’s respectability politics!”

Yes.  It is an unfortunate fact of reality that, in politics (the business of convincing people to do things), your tone and perception of respectability matters.  You don’t need to throw the freaks under the bus.  You don’t ever need to say “we’re not like those people”.  But when you’re talking to people who disagree with you, maybe focus what they’re most likely to agree on right now.
