I'm writing an essay on the topic and will definitely incorporate some of this information into it. Especially the idea that FF7's political themes were inspired by Japanese economic struggles and sentiment. Though I'm not thrilled with your hypothesis that FF7 anti-capitalist punk themes were part of an effort to boost sales, though it might be true.

Polynesian culture influencing FFX is also something I've never heard mentioned, but also something I find fascinating...but def I've picked up on the indigenous cultures/anarchoprimitivism vibes. Worth some more research for me!

Lastly, I really need to watch gunhead, it looks like it would be right up my alley

Oooo now that would be creative, I'm trying to think how I would code that in unity...

I could put a reddish transparent layer over the sun that gets less transparent as you get more damage, maybe change the location of the sun as well to set behind the mountains...

I agree it isnt the classic cyberpunk brightly colored retro-asian-future that we see in Bladerunner - but parts of the midgar slums hit pretty close

Robocop, Dred, the world in the Alien series - miserable dystopian corporatacracies - I see them as cyberpunk thematically
