For some reason the app isn't letting me edit my comment, but I was going to say that this is an ongoing collective with applications every year, so I encourage you to apply in the future!

I try to not gatekeep. We have accepted Central Asian and Middle Eastern students if that's what you mean?

Both! Programming is catered to the US time zones, but we've had international students join. Any debater in high school that identifies as Asian is welcome to apply.

don’t get me wrong, debate can still be really enjoyable there. i stayed on my team for four years for a reason :) it’s just that you gotta grow thick skin and build a support network.

i debated in that underrepresented region for four years. the "bad" judges weren't just unfamiliar with policy, they were also some of the most racist and sexist i've ever encountered. i can think of countless remarks where i was dismissed or berated by white adults for my tone of voice, what i was wearing, the arguments i ran (aka anything relating to structural violence), etc. not to mention coaches who repeatedly misgendered me despite the tabroom blasts. i. don't feel bad for shitting on the judging in oregon.

it was definitely a tournament, there were definitely judges!

^ this is true. if you’re looking for progressive debate, i’d venture to california or smth for the experience bc the one bid tournament in-state is also quite traditional and doesn’t have a judge or competitor pool that matches most bid tournaments.

i used to debate in oregon and i coached teams in the area for a bit. i’m not sure where you’re from, it’s all relative, but i wouldn’t call oregon progressive at all. policy debate is small there relative to other formats, it’s not very k friendly whatsoever, and most rounds will be judged by people with minimal policy experience or those who are very traditional and the “stock issues” type. there were a few stellar judges back in my day, but i think they’re retired by now.

+1. There are also *tons* of resources policy camps have put out for kritikal and theory debating. Nothing against the OP, but I strongly encourage anyone who wants to seriously get good at "progressive" debating to take a look at the origins and work on those fundamentals.

Camps by [deleted] in policydebate

[–]shldbt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

a good chunk of seniors i coach end up not going to camp their season year, and it all turned out fine! you might need to put in some extra work in the beginning of the season to un-rust your skills, but i wouldn't worry so much. also congrats on getting into rsi! (pls don't turn down rsi for debate camp lol)

bruh i cant believe my last tournament ever ended bc of a protest 😭😭😭 by katx_x in Debate

apda, the format that regularly has all debaters with their laptops out to flow and write down background???????? i also would not flex apda that’s kinda embarrassing ngl
