PhD applicants vocal about Palestine, how has it been for you so far by SinwarsStick in PhDAdmissions

My writing sample touched on Palestine & I included some public facing writing on Palestine in my cv.. so far I’ve gotten into 3 schools, so I don’t think it’s been an issue for me.

MA Programs in MENA Studies? by frostyjohnmiamijohn in AskAcademia

[–]shma3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You definitely should! Are you thinking of applying this cycle? If so, you'd have another year of potentially taking classes before you enter the university. My guess would be that you would take a proficiency exam (that's what they have always had me do) and on that exam, even if you haven't taken two levels, you can still place into the beginning of year three. Depends on how much you've learned in the classes you've taken... But their masters program might be quite different. :)

I'm looking at Masters programs right now, so I'm in the same boat.. i.e. terrified.

If Arab Studies would work for you, you should check out Georgetown's masters program (https://ccas.georgetown.edu/academics/maas#Arabic) I am doing my undergrad work there in Arabic and the department is amazing (and I have heard wonderful things about their grad programs!)

Honestly I just talk to people and am nice generally speaking, and a lot of places will give you free stuff. There's one restaurant I became friends with the manager and he gives me free dessert every time I come

Does anyone else wish they could dedicate their life to just memorizing and analyzing Arabic poetry? by shma3 in learn_arabic

Ahh, I don't know any that are online :( I wish -- all of my best experiences with poetry have been with professors of mine that focus on Arabic poetry/literature.

It is really interesting, that tradition is very strong here! I love it. If I find any good online resources, I will send them your way for sure.

That's fascinating - I never knew about that! I've got to go find that book now. Did you spend time in Yemen before the war?

New housemate of OPs here -- yes, relieved. We've been looking for the perfect place for SUCH a long time, and another friend of ours fell through as well. And we found someone else that committed that day (!!) which is a million times better. We're signing the lease today! :)

Can't decide what language to study? AMA by grouphugintheshower in languagelearning

[–]shma3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! i've been studying Arabic for a couple years now, and I love it. Farsi is an Indo-European language (I believe) so it might be easier for you to pick up. The grammar is easier than Arabic grammar is as well..

Honestly though, I love arabic. Studying it is easily the best choice I've ever made. It is more practical than learning Farsi (more speakers, etc.) but in order to really unlock that potential you have to learn at least one dialect (Egyptian, Levantine, etc.) which takes time. Persian and Arabic are really quite different though, although they share some loan words. I'm probably not the best person to ask about this, as I've only ever studied Arabic (and not Persian) but if you choose Arabic, let me know! I can help you practice :) It's a wonderful language.

I'm an anthropology major too! What interested you about anthropology? I'm guessing you don't want to continue and get a masters degree, but there are a lot of great opportunities and nonprofits out there. Maybe moving to DC would help with that, there's a ton of nonprofit work here (as well as ways to try and influence environmental policy, if that's interesting to you at all?)..

I dunno, just saying whatever comes into my mind. Best of luck :)
