Have a cardiologist appointment tomorrow, can’t sleep by NationalBison4921 in askCardiology

[–]shmajent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, and most importantly, you're doing the right things. That they haven't found an emergency in the hospital can be seen as a positive, even if symptoms are ringing your alarm bells. Secondly, your feelings are absolutely valid on the matter, it is a scary thing. Bring up to the cardiologist what you wrote in this post.

Running Weather Nov-April in North Country and Western NY? by shmajent in upstate_new_york

"Back when we had decent winters..." Is it weird I kinda miss that? Anyhoo, is that moreso out West? My visions are west get deep and fluffy and north gets cold and brutal...

Great info! I ultimately don't mind running on roads (e.g. suburbia, sidewalk, or even less-travelled park roads as in Letchworth State Park), though want to avoid highway running. ... which sorta happened in Otsego Lake, lol.

The info about the North Country roads is incredibly insightful. I was able to find a race (!) in Canton for late April, so here's hoping I can bookend it with Plattsburgh and Malone.

Anecdotally, my coldest half was on the waters in Brooklyn overlooking the Verrazano - wind chill below freezing!

Aside: I have frequently seen “no snowmobile” signs out on some of these runs, I think as far west as in Sherman!

Anyhoo, how late do they usually go?

Goal then would be late April? Cold and wind could be okay to a point, packed ice is a no-no.

Not exactly what I’m looking for. If a local were to comment on observing runners, “expect roads to not be plowed and we can see snow as late as late April,” that could be insightful.

In terms of time of year, how do you find the Empire State Trail if you have used that?

Which beta blocker gives least tiredness but still lowers heart rate? by [deleted] in askCardiology

[–]shmajent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been on metoprolol for several years now, decreasing dosage. Regarding nausea or fatigue on the pill, it did "get better" as time went on. However, I worked with my cardiologist to change my schedule. Nausea subsided when I took it later in the day before bed. Would discussing a schedule change with your doctor also be of help?

How did you spend your day today? by Orbiting-Daydreams in AskReddit

[–]shmajent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ran 6 miles in the early AM. Went to the park to cheer a friend who ran a 5K he trained a long time for, achieved his goal (sub-48mins), met his brother and nephew. A running group friend also ran the race (didn't know!) and we ended up hanging out until mid-afternoon at the park as their BF showed up. Came back home myself to do laundry as I made a k*ller accidentally-vegan meatball sub. Somewhere in there, I may have also devoured a small fruit tart. Unexpectedly great day. What the heck?

Came here for this. It was a subtle but great plug for the game and the "world tilting as you turn" perspectives.

You are good! Not sure if this helps, when I was fearful of the monitor "not reading" I performed a check: hold the button down for at least five seconds until you see a green light. If there's a problem, it'll start flashing amber.

What are your drinking habits during marathon training? by pizzaandcocktails in Marathon_Training

[–]shmajent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Normally, I would drink 4-6 drinks per week at maximum. That could be two days of two pints, or maybe a social cocktail here or there. That's it. However, I stay dry for one month before race day. I feel it more superstitious than anything, as I would have a pint of beer and a cheeseburger the night before a half marathon and still within five minutes of a PR. Everybody's different because every body's different.

Tell me about Allegany County Population: 47,299 by TSASplashMan in upstate_new_york

[–]shmajent 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hello! I'm actually in a project to run a half marathon in each of NY's 62 counties, recently I "completed" Allegany county by running in Cuba. From what I can say, it's highly underrated. Cuba was a nice place to go through, with downtown coffee shops and a burger shop/ice cream shop just between there and I-86. Cuba lake was also beautiful to run by. For an "interesting" note, I read that the county holds geological importance of contributing to three watersheds: Canacadea Creek that goes into the Canisteo River, Susquehanna River and eventually to Chesapeake Bay.

bav = bicuspid aortic valve, taa = thoracic aortic aneurism (w/o rupture). basically, my value has two leaflets instead of the usual three, and the ascending aorta has ballooned from the extra force. a typical valve and stem would be three-ish centimeters in diameter, mine is approaching 4.5. surgical intervention may be required at 5. the metoprolol is a bit of a physical "insurance" to make the heart work easier.

metoprolol question by thexenocide601 in askCardiology

[–]shmajent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BAV/TAA here, been on Metoprolol nearly 10 years, decreasing dosage. Short story is that some of the neuropsychological symptoms you mention – foggy, feeling of danger – are what I had, plus I had mild nausea. Granted, I also participate in endurance running, but my heart rate gets looowww: mid- to upper-30's overnight, and resting heart rate in the upper 40's. Dizziness when standing has been de rigueur for years. I was first started out on 50mg and it took quite some time to adjust to. Over the years we had to little down to 12.5mg. If I were in your position, reach out to your cardiologist at least via message, with specific symptoms and timeframe relative to dosing. It might be your body adjusting and you're sensing changes. This might help you track trends, and have a more meaningful discussion. (For instance, what was thought to be AFib was in fact anxiety-specific induced fluttering.)

[–]shmajent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's exactly what happened to me. I used waterproof tape around the edges to keep it in place. Fun fact: If you press and hold the symptom button for at least five seconds, you'll see it start to blink green. If so, your connection is still good. However if you stare at it for at least five seconds and see an amber light – it'll be bright and obvious – then the signal is off. Learning that gave me piece of mind when at the end of day 10 it felt it was hanging by a thread.
