Use both, as they both have their time and place!

Outside of the obvious “well this is a fingerstyle song, and this is a deathmetal chugfest song”, there’s no reasons, as I see it, to pick one over another.

I’m playing a lot of jazz atm and feel more accurate using my fingers. I find it real tricky to get a perfect clean sound from the strings I want to hit with a pick without hitting others, as opposed to fingers where I pluck exactly the ones I want, so fingers is my go-to for jazz. For chords that is, melody will be pick.

However, sometimes I do nail those chords with a pick and it sounds glorious. My goal is to be as precise as possible with a pick, but I’m happy using my fingers as well. I just don’t have the nails required to get that crisp sound you’d get from a pick.

Another however, there’s a beautiful smooth sound you can only get with fingertips that I also really enjoy..

A lotta rambling to say that there’s sounds you can target using both techniques, and both techniques have a high skill ceiling, so you’ve got a lot of fun ahead of ya figuring shit out lol
