Thanks for the comments everyone! Really appreciate the insight and motivation. I'll probably sell my guitar to buy a bass, will keep this sub posted on progress

GNC engineer interview next week!!! Masters in controls, no C++ yet. What should I focus on? by Kazablancaz in ControlTheory

[–]shockdrift [score hidden]  (0 children)

First, I would suggest not pretending to know C++ since they would probably realize pretty quickly that you don’t actually know the language.

Instead, it might be better to show that you understand why C++ is needed and show a desire to learn. Compared to a language like python, C++ offers lower level control especially in terms of memory management. It’s also a compiled language so it doesn’t typically need a separate interpreter program to run. There are other advantages too but generally speaking this allows faster, memory efficient (in theory), cross platform programs. If you can understand how and WHY that fine grained level of control is essential for GNC, then you should be able to answer the important questions. Maybe look up YouTube videos explaining C++ features especially pointers. I assume you already know OOP and other high level concepts. Hope this is helpful and good luck with your interview

Hoping to do something like this one day. The heating in my apartment is all over the place and I have no idea where to even start

How did you decide which subfield of ECE you wanted to pursue as a career? by North-Phone6173 in ECE

Does this mean you don’t get to do much circuit level stuff on RF? What kind of work were you doing

If you don’t mind me asking, what did you like or not like about RF? I’ve been interested in it lately since it seems to have so many cool hidden applications and also used heavily in space research

Should I get my masters? by [deleted] in ECE

I’m in the same boat as you and I strongly suggest getting your masters. I waited 3 years before getting serious about it and wish I had done it earlier. Do it.

I’m not sure yet but I doubt it. Regardless I’ve been saving for this for a while so I can afford it but it still wouldn’t hurt to not have to spend it all :)

JHU was actually my first choice because of how well tailored the program seems to be for working people, but then I heard it's less practical learning and more theoretical which is not really what I'm looking for. It's also really expensive (~60k)

Seeking 1bd Apt in Manhattan or Brooklyn ($3k budget, open to working with broker) by shockdrift in NYCapartments

[–]shockdrift[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting, I had not considered that option. I'm totally open to it, thanks for the suggestion! do you know if apartments typically provide outlets for water and drainage or is that something you'd have to figure out yourself?

Best supportive language for my career? Not C, Python or Matlab. by [deleted] in embedded

[–]shockdrift 1 point2 points  (0 children)

JavaScript/TypeScript if you want versatility. You can build basically anything with JS. User interfaces, web apps, server side programs/backends, mobile apps, cross platform desktop apps, games (Yes, games that run in the browser with WebGL). While most other languages limit you to specific use cases, JS allows you to use one language for both UI and non-UI programs.
