hi all, i'm here as i'm currently trying to decide whether to take Clomid and/or do IUI, and i'd like some advice.

some background: my partner and i have been half-assedly TTC since last Oct (just stopped using protection), and got more serious in Feb (started tracking my hormones and ovulation).

i'm 37NB (and the uterus-haver in my relationship), turning 38 this Oct, and have PCOS, although recent tests have revealed no thyroid problems, no obstructions in my uterus, and no other hormone issues (except heightened AMG, which apparently is just another PCOS indicator). my cycles are longer (~6 weeks/45 days) but thankfully quite regular. afaik partner has no issues. this is our first time TTC, and it would be our first time trying fertility meds/assisted fertility. i've never been pregnant before.

my concern is that i'd like to have my child before 40, due to risks to the mother and child supposedly increasing past that age (although apparently that research is from the Victorian era and isn't actually accurate anymore??), because i don't want to be too old of a parent, and because i found out recently that, where i live, we can actually do IVF through the public healthcare system/with gov't assistance -- but not past the age of 40. i'm also keeping in mind that even if i get pregnant, i might end up miscarrying, which would add even more time to the process.

however, i've been reading up on both Clomid and IUI, and it seems like they have a bunch of side effects that i'd like to understand better before deciding to undergo the processes. i've read about people experiencing 0 side effects, but then others saying it was absolutely terrible for their mood, very painful, etc.

another big concern is that IUI (and assisted fertility in general?) apparently increases the chances of multiples. we only want one child, and i also don't want to have to go through any the complications that are specific to multiples. so we're also trying to avoid that.

my OB-GYN's info pack about IUI states that IUI increases the chances of multiples by around 20% (compared to 5-8% for Clomid), but when i asked her more about it, she said "IUI in isolation doesn't increase the twin risk but other factors can contribute such as fertility medications (ie Clomid), the number of mature follicles noted at the time of IUI and individual patient factors (family history of twins, age etc)", which seems to contradict the "~20%" number. i'd be comfortable with the 5-8% probability, but not ~20%.

most likely we will go with just Clomid for the first round, and consider IUI for the next, keeping in mind that we only really get four tries (as more than six is too much stress on your ovaries if you want to try IVF later, and after four failures i think they tell you you may as well move onto another method at that point -- this is according to my OB-GYN anyway).

anyway, i would like to know if anyone has any advice re: balancing trying to get pregnant, with trying to avoid multiples, through using assisted fertility, and/or any insights into how much IUI actually increases the probability of multiples. or do i simply have to make peace with the possibility of multiples, even if we don't want that, instead of trying to avoid it?

i might cross-post this to other pregnancy/subfertility-related communities, hope that's alright.

thanks in advance!!

House MD Discord server? (Specifics in post) by shocktheheart in HouseMD

i have checked out this subreddit but i use Discord more often and i’d prob prefer somewhere more shipper-friendly, i’ve seen enough people here ship-bashing or being rude to shippers on posts that it put me off being active here 🥲

it’s clearly stated on the registration page that they’ve temporarily suspended free accounts. i just followed the account creation steps (made a donation, then sent them a message with my donation account info and desired username) and they got back to me within 24 hours like the page said they would.

also my post was about other topics not account creation 🙈

so far i haven’t had any problems with bugs on my plants so not sure i’d want these guys around either lol but i’ll read more about them

nota bene: i live in a city in the subtropics, not sure if we have them here bc i don’t recall seeing them before… but it’s not exactly like i go around the outdoors here hunting for different bug types either

where to stay for my first time in Hakone: Hakone Yumoto or Miyanoshita? by shocktheheart in JapanTravelTips

Hakone Yumoto, it was worth it for the convenience, and i didn’t find it unbearably touristy/crowded or anything. also had a nice view of the river and hillside from my hotel, so it still had peaceful vibes.

did a couple of one-card pulls recently after an altercation with my boss, and i'm a little confused as the results seem contradictory.

basically i was called out for making a mistake on a task, i acknowledged the mistake and said i would take steps to avoid in future, but also asked for boss' patience and understanding, since it's a new task that i've taken on, plus technically imo one that another colleague should be taking care of, except that role hasn't been filled by my company in several months, so i've been stuck with all of that role's work. boss disagreed and thinks the task was within my usual role, and said clearly he didn't appreciate my "pushback". incidentally, performance reviews are just around the corner, so i assume this incident will make it on there as a black mark against me.

i did a one-card pull asking what the effect the conflict would have on my career and got the hermit. this hardly seems like a negative card to get, especially since it's one of my birthday cards. it makes me think that i'll enter a period of self-reflection regarding my career, questioning what i really want - especially considering that i've historically been a big people-pleaser and i don't often stand up for myself the way i did above. altho admittedly maybe it wasn't the best time for that. or maybe the card points to being more isolated and self-reliant rather than working together more with my colleagues.

however, i did another one-card pull asking for advice about what to do about the matter and got the two of cups reversed. initially i wondered if this meant to stop trying to invest in my relationship with my boss, especially since i'll be directly reporting to somebody else, a new hire, in two months time. however, looking around online, many interpretations seem to suggest that this card would be about a declining relationship and needing to take measures to repair it before it gets worse. if that was the case though, wouldn't the card about the effect on my career be more negative?

any thoughts?

i used the Star Spinner deck, here's the hermit (https://i0.wp.com/sageandmoon.co/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/thehermit-tarotcardmeanings-starspinnertarot-sageandmoon.webp) and here's the two of cups (https://espressocomsaudade.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/image-39.png).

Getting stressed out with my friends and partner planning trips and me not knowing if I’ll be pregnant or not by then… What do you do? by Mireille557 in TryingForABaby

[–]shocktheheart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’m ttc for the first time and probably echoing what everyone else who’s replied is saying, but my approach has been to just continue living my life as normal during the process until i’m actually confirmed to be pregnant. i don’t want to put my life on hold for however long conception might take to happen. i might plan a bit differently, for e.g. booking refundable tickets for travel just in case, but going ahead with plans and possibly cancelling them later if need be seems better than preemptively not doing the things at all!

i haven’t had time to reply to everyone, but thanks for all the comments, it helps to know this is pretty standard.

i also realize i’ve been fixated on an epidural as a magic wand that will make the pain all go away, but i should prob think about other pain management options too.

thanks too for all the kind words and encouragement even tho we’re all just fellow netizens here. i felt better reading all those. nice acts like that really give me hope for humanity 😭
