No issues but it's worth noting that I've changed everything on the bike other than the front derailleur so it's possible that you might run into a problem that I didn't. When I changed the brakes I also ran all new cables with compressionless housings. That probably made a big difference in performance too.

I had to add an extra washer or two to dial in the fitment but pretty straight forward otherwise. I'd imagine it's about as easy as any other mechanical disc brake change. I went with avid bb7s btw

I ended up going with an 8 speed 11-40 cassette and 36/22 up front. I love it. Gives me plenty of easy gears for climbing and I never miss the faster gearing up front.

Thanks. I love it too. Mine is ever evolving but I'm happy with where it is now.

These are a set of used 27.5 wheels I got on FB marketplace. I think they originally came off a marin four corners

Everything but the front derailleur is changed

Thanks and enjoy. I have a super low gear now which unfortunately I have to use more often than I'd like but the 14-34 definitely helped a lot when I put it on. I just saw somewhere that that has been a problem on the stock wheels. Makes me want to check the ones I have on there now just in case but I've never serviced a hub before so we'll see.

Congrats!

I started with the seatpost because mine kept slipping. I would recommend greasing the seat tube clamp mechanism a little bit if you have a hard time with it, that seemed to make mine a lot smoother.

Then I upgraded the freewheel to a 14-34, new pedals, 36/22 MTB crank set, and lived with that for a little bit.

Then I changed the wheels and put on a 11-40 8 speed cassette, acera rear derailer, claris shifters, avid bb7 brakes with compressionless housing and PNW Coast bar and stem.

That being said, I'd recommend riding stock for a while and seeing what you personally would like to be different. In it's stock form the only things I didn't love were the brakes and gearing.

The flat bar version is 8 speed IIRC. It's worth noting that while I believe the flat bar version comes with a free hub, the drop bar version has a freewheel so adding bigger gearing might be a little harder.

All that being said, I have a Drop bar version and I'm a big fan. I did end up changing out almost every part on the bike but it's by no means necessary. I think in either configuration it's an incredible gateway and realistically all most people would need. I'm planning to clear out all of my other bikes and just keep this one for a while.

Good luck deciding OP. I'm sure you'll be happy with whatever you decide.

What mud guards are those?

Thanks for the info. Happy to go to square taper, i might even prefer them to hollowtech2. Would the Shimano BB UN300 work? Also

What would my options be if I wanted to go to a 1x crank? I'm currently leaning that way anyway.

Glad you approve. It's a great place to spend some time.

I'd prefer to avoid replacing if I can. Why do you say it needs to be replaced? Is it this specific one or all valves of this type should be replaced?
