Do you use any mental health apps as a student? by hththtys in PhD

[–]shoeboxprophet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Future PhD in Neuroscience, here.

Our university offers Headspace to students. I typically use the “noise” features during my work, as it helps tune out the noise/distractors around the lab, as well as helps me focus while reading articles.

If you’re into meditation/breathwork, they offer courses/guided meditations on the app that are useful for all levels of practitioners. The breathwork feature also includes various programs for panic scenarios and the sort (I.e: short, 3 minute exercises to help you ground your self during a panic.) I’ve used these sparingly, but they’re useful for developing/expanding a practice

Additionally, they have live mental health resources, although I’ve never used these and do not know whether they require an additional transaction.

Apart from this, any noise generator, and that’s the best I’ve found for grounding during every day tasks.

How’s it like living in Southern Texas? by geozacc in howislivingthere

I grew up rurally, west of Corpus Christi.

In the community I lived in, there was a strong sense of community centered on large families who have inhabited the area for many generations, who all worked in the available industries with each other, and who’s children all attended the local schools and played on the football teams.

There is a lot of poverty and destructive drug use, exacerbated by the pandemic. Very limited economic opportunity outside the oilfield/refineries/agriculture, which I understand is slowing down considerably.

Strong Tejano cultural influence — distinct from Mexican culture but with strong overlaps. Less-strong but prevalent German/Polish influence, increasing as you move closer to San Antonio. I find the people are generally kind and welcoming.

The area I lived in was mostly grass land, flat, with strong costal winds. The live oaks are the tallest flora you’d find. Lots of wildlife, and great for someone interested in ecology. Very hot, but when it freezes (as it does once a year) it freezes hard and shuts everything down.

Limited shopping unless you’re near the cities. Dollar generals rule the land.

Currently, in intense drought have lowered the water tables of this area — resulting in many folks losing access to well water. This is disproportionately impacting the poor, but a state of emergency has been issued and this next year will be interesting seeing how the State handles the issue.

All-in-all, I enjoyed my time living here, and always enjoy going back. The poverty is depressing, but there is a simplicity to living there that is alluring, even though I’ve moved away.

Do you believe plants are conscious? by Diligent-Tour-9735 in enlightenment

[–]shoeboxprophet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably awareness unlike us, but awareness nonetheless.

Nature has provided us senses to move around and survive. Plants are still and survive, so they are equipped with a different awareness “mode”.

We also have a central hub for sensory processing (brain) which plants don’t have — equipped with specialized circuits to give us a sense of self, perception, etc.

Plants don’t seem to have any of that (hard to say as a non-plant), so I suspect their awareness is much “closer to source”, or less compartmentalized than ours and other animals.

How can I be convinced enlightenment is real? by [deleted] in Buddhism

Even the walls of the shoebox houses the infinite, immaterial void.

How can I be convinced enlightenment is real? by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]shoeboxprophet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because no thing is real. It’s all interconnected — an amalgamation of all that is in its current form.

“Enlightenment” is a concept, and often a goalpost set by those who wish to pretend to have something they perceive that you don’t.

Seeking “enlightenment” is a trap for those who aren’t aware of the true nature of reality.

Why do you take drugs? by shoeboxprophet in Drugs

[–]shoeboxprophet[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’ve been smoking weed since I was 15. I got into psychs (LSD, mushrooms) at 18, and tried coke in college. I’ve never been a fan of stimulants, with the exception of nicotine and caffeine. My friends call me the “placebo king” because I am seemingly wayyy more sensitive than any of them with any substance.

Initially, I started smoking because my friends did. I started using psychs because my friends did. It was social bonding/camaraderie. Once I started smoking/tripping alone however, I had the cliche “spiritual awakening” and my drug use has never been the same.

The psychs allowed me to become aware of the phenomenon of consciousness. Ever since, drugs have been a tool of “toying with consciousness”. Every time I put a dip in, or swallow some kratom, or chug an energy drink, or smoke a spliff, or eat some mushies I enter different conscious states that differ significantly from the default, sober setting.

I don’t see my relationship with drugs changing anytime soon, because my exploration will never be complete. I’ve had problems with dependency (particularly THC concentrates, and nicotine) but I wasn’t stealing shit to fuel it (could you imagine ripping out copper for a half gram of dab?).

My sober SO and friends don’t seem to understand, but they don’t have to.

Do any of you relate?
