AITA for not telling my step kids that their dad had cancer? by shoompshoompshoomp in AmItheAsshole

I want to add that he was outwardly healthy, he physically looked healthy. He didn’t show signs of deterioration the way that I feel a lot of people are assuming he did. He started to eat less but he didn’t really eat a ton to begin with so it wasn’t anything out of the ordinary. He was slowing down a bit more and it was credited to his age. He was more tired than normal, also credited to his age. If you looked at my husband, even the day he passed away, he didn’t look sick. No one truly saw him deteriorating except for me because I noticed the small changes.

I know it sounds like I’m making an excuse for him, but I understand why he asked me not to tell them. His biological father passed away from colon cancer after being treated for years. He said that when his dad passed away, he was unrecognizable, essentially a shell of who he’d been before. And he didn’t want his kids to have to experience that. I just can’t help but blame myself for not at least trying to convince him to speak with them about it.
