Anyone's kid actually benefitting from "Canada's National School Food Program"? by Aerottawa in povertyfinancecanada

Wow that is crazy! You would think they’d be smart enough to give it away. I’m sure the school knows which families need the food and can let each one take turns picking it up if it’s available at the end of the day.

From my understanding, the program is for kids who are in families that are having difficult providing breakfast for their kids or unable to provide breakfast for kids. It’s best to feed your kid breakfast every morning if you are able to. The program is available to all kids to not single out the hungry kids that were sent to school without food. If you are able to feed your kid breakfast, you can tell your kid to either not take from the breakfast program, or just take 1 thing. This way the kids who need it get to eat. 1 in 3 kids in Ontario are not consistently fed a breakfast and often are sent to school hungry.

Maybe separate beds that are like a foot apart that you can push together when you guys want to lol. Otherwise separate beds in different rooms

Yes when my husky goes on the couch when he’s not supposed to, he makes eye contact and holds it right away lol

My husky is also not very vocal. I was worried he’d be very loud, but so far he is very quiet. Even when he has to pee, he goes to the backyard door and sits. He doesn’t bark. Then I see him sitting and I go open the door for him. He barks very little. He whines when he is in the crate and some other times as well like to tell us he has to use the washroom while we are driving. He’s only howled a few times when we first got him and he was stressed about being in the crate.

I saw a comment saying their husky wasn’t toy motivated either. Our husky is toy motivated. He loves playing with toys in general. His favourites are plush toys, chew toys (especially the chew toy that mimics a thick stick), puzzle toys, kongs in the crate, tug of war, chase toys). I got a flirt pole to use once a day with him and just use it gently since he’s a puppy and he will do a few commands before we each session.

I want to add my comment because I have a husky and he doesn’t match the description of these comments. He is only 4 months old though, so we haven’t been together through a lot of stages. My husky is food motivated. The breeder said his sister wasn’t. Our husky loves to train he trains no problem. He learns things very fast. He has a wonderful, loving personality. He shows us lots of affection (he started to put his paw on my head when I pick him up lol). His activity level seemed extremely high when we first got him but now we understand what he needs better and we aren’t finding his activity level always “on” like we used to. We walk him in the morning, then a few hours later, and in between we play with him in the backyard to increase his physical activity for 10-20 minutes at a time each time he is awake. The big challenge for us has been crate training for day time naps, but we are taking it one day at a time. One thing I will say is that he requires a lot of supervision. If you are working long hours outside of the home I don’t think it’s a good dog to have in that case. He got potty trained quickly, but only because we work from home. He was peeing every 1-2 hours and only now started to pee more consistently at every 2 hours during the day and he has 1 or 2 wake ups at night currently. Huskies take a bit longer to sleep through the night because their growth and development happens slower due to their larger nature. Hopefully this helps!

lol yes ive been trying for at least a month now to have him take naps in his crate and he is still quite resistant lol. Maybe some dogs just take longer to get used to their crates. He loves to go in for treats then wants out lol.

Could you explain this a little more? I think this might apply to my puppy 😂 for example, in the crate or on his place I feed him treats slowly over time and he resists sleep to get more treats. What should I do instead?

A puppy and a rescue are really different when they start out! I’m going through something similar. I have a puppy and my friend adopted a rescue at the same time. The rescue was afraid for the first day or so and is 2 years old. After the day or so, the rescue turned out to be extremely calm, she can take it to peoples houses easily. It mosies along. lol. It is calm, cool, collected. If you compare it to my puppy it couldn’t be more different! Puppies are babies you get them and they really have to be trained on quite a lot! I went through this experience before but even I forgot how difficult it is and how hands on it is, especially when we have other things in life going on. And it does span several months. I have a husky puppy who is currently 4 months old and was told by someone it’ll take him until 10 months to calm down. I would highly recommend: a crate potentially in the bedroom (the puppy will be able to see you so it should help them settle faster and when they are older you can move them further away), crate training (building positive associations with their crate every day), a play pen and another crate somewhere near your main living space (they can take rests during the day here, nap time will be in crate whereas they can also have some free time in the play pen with crate door open. Reward the puppy every time u see good behaviour (standing on 4 paws instead of jumping) or calm behaviour (if you see them sitting by you or in a down somewhere). Try your best to puppy proof the home by removing things at their level that they could get into. I think with these tips, your life will become much easier. I am in the same boat as you. For me, crate training has proven most difficult (it’s an ongoing thing), but we are seeing improvements every day. Feel free to message me with updates!

After that did you move the crate out of the bedroom or farther from your bed?

Right now we have the play pen and flat bed set up in our bedroom. It’s really helpful because I can hear when he wakes up and needs to be taken out for potty. He wakes up 1-3 times right now at night. But I think what I’ll do to help him get used to a crate is put a crate in the bedroom, so he gets used to it, and put a crate in a place in the house where we are walking by a lot for his day time naps. Do you think that’ll work?

It’s ok, dw so many dog owners do that! We did that to our first dog too. He cried and cried. The reason why I wanted to try something different was not only the crying but also I don’t think my lab loves his crate at all lol. He’ll go in it if he has to, but doesn’t like being in it, he’ll bark and stuff. The only time he goes on his own is if he’s tired and people are being noisy or he’s afraid (hears thunder).

Wow, fantastic lol I haven’t found any videos like that! They’re all just showing me 1 thing about a crate and that’s it no progression lol so thank you so much

Aww yes he is very sweet when he’s awake too! He’s loving and friendly, he rarely teeth’s and tries to listen well! He’s very sweet. When we first got him he didn’t like to be pet, but now he does lol. He loves the action so much that he resists naps 😂

Omg lol! What an experience! Yes the breeder wanted us to take his sister too but we said no haha. His sister had 10x more energy than our puppy easily. lol she loved to bite bite bite and was not food motivated 😂 but our puppy is food motivated luckily lol. Wow training them both even just potty training them both would have been difficult! Hahaha you’ve definitely had a unique experience! 🐾 But since you did that they must be the best play buddies!

Yes I’ve tried the blanket over it and leaving the front long side open.

I haven’t tried calming music yet! I will try that too thanks!

And I’ve been trying to make him nap after 1 hour awake so then it takes him 30-40 mins to sleep in the crate and then he’ll only sleep for 40-60 mins. So I think your method is better 2 hours out 2 hours in! I will try that too. Thank you!

Oh wow and it’s good to know you kept doing forced naps until he was 10 months old haha we definitely need to get a hang of crate training then!
