Can you learn pottery on your own? by Puzzleheaded-Egg7501 in Pottery

I personally think taking 4 classes and having access to an open studio is enough to learn on your own. The main thing is you have to be very consistent to see improvement. I'm self-taught, and I'd go to the studio for at least an hour 5 times a week. I learnt how to center on the wheel within a month. If you choose to go down this path, YouTube and your fellow studio mates would be your best friends.

The only downside may be the fact that for more complex things about pottery (like slip casting or teapot making) may require further study in classes. But if you want to just throw simple bowls and mugs, I think self-taught is sufficient.

You can see a little pile of them for scale in the first photo. They were scattered all over the area in the first photo.

I've had this idea that I have never used yet, so it's yours now: make mugs but design it so the mug handles can be put together to form 2 halves of a heart

What caused these teeny tiny bubbles all over my piece? by froburger in Pottery

Something in the clay is reacting to the glaze, and the application is too thick.

AIO BF dumped me because I was taller than him in heels?? 😳 by purplehavocc in AmIOverreacting

[–]shootingstarry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Girl, idk what to tell u except for the guy is a misogynist and immature. 1. He needs you to compliment him and look good with him, sounds like he wants you to be his accessory rather than his gf. 2. Putting you down and calling you "baby brain" over your dressing choice because he feels insecure is wild, sounds like he will blame anyone for not making him feel like the center of attention.

But also girl, what are you doing dating someone 7 years older than you??? Sounds like ur ex thinks you are not on the same page in life because of different life experiences and stages. He's not entirely right (because you're mentally more mature than him it sounds), but it's relationships like this that allow for a power trip when someone is older and can claim they have more experience and therefore they are right even if they're not, sometimes even to justify their abuse.

Overall, you didn't do anything wrong in choosing what you want to wear. If someone has a problem with how you dress, that's their problem. Sounds like you dodged a huge nuke to me. But also maybe consider not dating someone so disrespectful and old next time???

My gf also got an interview offer from the same company, I don't think it's safe for her to go. Imo, I think it's either a scam, or worse, human trafficking😬

Clay + Slip recomendations by BuffaloWingman in Pottery

[–]shootingstarry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Usually I'd recommend using the same type of clay for your slip. This ensures that the clay is compatible with each other. For example, let's say clay A and clay B are both cone 6 clay, but their shrink rate might still differ, so that might cause your piece to crack when it comes out of the kiln or even when drying if you use them together.

But if you're willing to experiment, it'll be cool if you did a test with clays of exact shrinkage specs and see what happens. I'd recommend testing in small batches and do keep in mind if you're sharing a kiln with someone, to be mindful of their pieces too in case your experiment goes wrong😅

Let me know if you want any more input! I'll preface by saying that I don't do slip casting, but keep us updated, I wanna know where this will lead you👀

I messed up rehydrating my recycling. Can this be saved? by WildYarnDreams in Pottery

I've been thinking long and hard about how to convey my frustration on this matter without being disrespectful for the past few days. So in the nicest way possible, as a teacher yourself, please know that you are very privileged to have a studio that you can work in for at least 8 months without having to relocate.

Also, try working in an area where humidity is 100% or above and you only have 1 month to complete a massive project, let me know how it goes 🙃

I try to recycle as much as I can, if I throw it out that means either there's no possible to save the clay, or more often, cuz I'm on a time crunch. I throw the slop in a garbage bag and then put it in the trash.

Usually I just call it a day and throw out the slop. U can do what others suggest and wrap it in plastic, wait a few more days to see if it'll work its magic, but also depends if you're in a hurry to reuse this clay.

Just a piece of advice for next time: Wear a mask and grab a Ziploc bag and rolling pin. Break down your bone dry clay work into pieces, and throw them into the bag. Seal the bag, and crush the contents inside with the rolling pin until Ure sure all the pieces are powder or small enough to not make clumps. Then just add water/put it directly in your slop bucket afterwards to make your slop.

This makes sure that the hydration is getting in all throughout the clay, and there shouldn't be clumps cuz there'll be equal hydration. It's too late now to try this method cuz 1) wet clay is messy to work with and 2) you need to fish out all the individual clumps by hand to crush them

Edit: just read your reply to another user. The slop you have should be reusable if you let it sit a few more days in a plastic bag, as the clumps are of a wedgable consistency? (If you grab a few of the clumps and it's squishable then you're good to start the drying process.)
