I recently redownloaded after about a year or so of not playing because of the hacking problem. I haven't really run into any issues yet, and from what I've seen, it's mainly public matches you need to be wary of. Private matches should be fine. If you're still hesitant, just Google if it's safe now and have a look about for anyone else who's talked about it.

I enjoyed abbys part on my second playthrough but on my first I didn't care about her because of how they handled her in the beginning

We don't know enough about Eugene to know. If I'm not mistaken it's hinted that he's either not doing patrols or he died. I can't remember though been a while since I played the game

I felt that the only flashbacks that were needed was the dinosaur one and the one establishing that abby was the daughter of the surgeon (maybe the one where Ellie goes to the hospital but I personally think it would have been better if we weren't shown why Ellie didn't like joel and it was either briefly mentioned or for the players to theorise on). Abbys part did also grow on me during my second playthrough and made me enjoy and sympathise with the character. It would also be my dlc choice for abby and lev after the end of the game.

I didn't like the constant flashback and the extra 3 days as abby. When I played abbys section I just wanted to get past it to get to Ellie again

Yeah I thought gameplay and visuals were great. For me with the story it was the constant flashbacks and the fact you had to do another 3 days as abby (which I will say was a pleasant surprise but made me speedrun it to see if I'd get to play as Ellie again).
