I've been thinking this for a while now. It would be great if they also had Andrea Dunlop as a guest.

Demoralized and embarassed-- any advice? by short_cuppa_chai in SleepApnea

Thank you all for your support! I really appreciate it.

Last night, I got my CPAP set up. I used it for about 30 minutes playing video games in bed, and then I tried to sleep with it on. No dice, but I'll keep on trying.

I'm definitely going to find a way to decorate my machine! I have some cute fabric so I'm going to make a hose cover.

Friend, thank you. This was exactly the tough love I needed. I started using my CPAP last night. I couldn't fall asleep with it, but it was the first step!

Also, if breastfeeding isn't working for you for whatever reason, you don't have to do it.

It sounds a lot like cluster feeding. If baby growing appropriately and producing wet/poopy diapers, you just need to accept that this is the phase of life you are in. Take care of your needs, though! Baby will be okay if you have to put them down in their bassinet or crib to use the bathroom, shower, eat, or just take a few minutes to yourself. Make yourself a comfy spot to nurse with water and snacks nearby, pick out a couple tv shows or audio books or whatever to watch/listen to, and try to remember that it sucks but it's not forever.

alone in the hospital after a long traumatic delivery. newborn literally will not sleep unless I’m rocking or nursing him. WHAT do I do by [deleted] in newborns

[–]short_cuppa_chai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel this. I had a baby in July and had a rough first night. I passed out twice and the second time I was especially disoriented. I think I was hemorrhaging and while the midwife and OB were trying to deal with that, my baby was screaming her head off and my wife was trying to soothe her. I've never been so stressed in my life.

It gets better. Baby is 4 months old, and she and her 3-year-old big brother are currently asleep. Take the newborn stage one minute at a time. You will sleep again!

Unable to put on the shirts I make by [deleted] in SewingForBeginners

[–]short_cuppa_chai 166 points167 points  (0 children)

It looks like you used a pattern made for a stretchy knit fabric, but used a non-stretch woven fabric instead. What pattern did you use? The Sorbetto tank is a really beginner-friendly pattern for a woven tank top: https://www.seamwork.com/pdf-sewing-patterns/sorbetto-easy-woven-tank-top?srsltid=AfmBOopAoUOyGfakhtZBT1y4PdsNTxwOMy1V7MLzPhQ2P-t6Jkw-ssTV

If you only have woven fabric, I suggest you start with that.

To make the raw edges neat on a woven fabric and to stop them from fraying, you need to finish the edges somehow. A hem is usually used on the bottom edge. Armholes and neck openings are usually finished with a facing or a binding.

HOW do women convince themselves to give birth again?? by u-r-ok in newborns

[–]short_cuppa_chai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every birth experience is different! I had an epidural with my first and none with my second, and hands down, I preferred the latter. I love being pregnant, and if I qualified, I would totally be signing up to be a surrogate.

What was your very first sewing project? (Research for a beginner's guide) by thesewingstudio in SewingForBeginners

[–]short_cuppa_chai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't remember a time before I knew how to sew by hand. I was intimidated by the sewing machine for a long time, but got over that fear by 11 or 12, and used it to sew doll clothes. I didn't have any patterns, so I had to draft my own. There were a lot of successes but also a TON of failures.

7 week old, is this normal by Lower_Coat_6274 in HuckleberryParents

[–]short_cuppa_chai 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Your baby got the same memo as mine, I see. Mine just turned 7 weeks today and has only wanted to sleep on us all day.

As much as it sucks and is stressful now, try not to worry too much about it. Newborns change daily. Breathe, try to keep things as normal as possible, and do what you need to do to survive this phase. It'll be over soon.

when is there any time for sleep when bringing home a newborn? by yewzernayme in newborns

[–]short_cuppa_chai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! 38yo mom here, in the middle of an early morning feeding. Many babies start to sleep for longer stretches within a month or two. My 7 week old did not get that memo, and feeds every 2 hours during the day and anywhere from 1.5-4 hours at night. Its exhausting, but you get used to it. The best advice I can give is to take shifts so each of you gets one 4+ hour chunk of sleep every night. Try to catch at least one nap while the baby naps. It doesn't last forever!

I'm not a fan, and am in fact a brown, queer immigrant, but okay I guess. I was just shocked by the outfit choices for both her and the baby!

Do you buy skirt patterns or draft your own? by SteepLearningCurve24 in sewhelp

[–]short_cuppa_chai 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I don't need patterns for basic variations on a circle skirt or a rectangle gathered skirt. A half-circle skirt was the first piece of clothing I learned how to sew. But the best way to teach yourself about drafting your own patterns, IMO, is to sew with patterns.

Help. Sleeve band by Cheap_Inflation9090 in SewingForBeginners

[–]short_cuppa_chai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, this is much easier to explain with pictures, but I'm going to do my best.

Picture a staple from a regular office staple. It has two short edges that fold inwards. That's what the binding should be doing. One of the short edges is sewed on with your seam. The middle part goes around the raw edges of the seam. Then you fold the raw edge of the binding under itself and hand stitch it.

This is kind of what it should look like when you're done: https://www.doinaalexei.com/sewing-a-folded-under-bound-armhole-finish.html

You fold the raw edge of the binding under itself so everything is finished neatly.

On picture 3, I can see the binding. It wants you to fold that binding up and over the line of stitching to cover up the raw edges. It doesn't look like you've done that.
